An Evening Sacramentans Will Forget for the Rest of Their Lives

Comedic greats Steve Martin and Martin Short made their Golden 1 debut with “An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life” on Friday. The nationwide tour, which was highlighted by a Netflix special of the same title, comes with musical support from the Grammy Award-winning band The Steep Canyon Rangers and Jimmy Kimmel pianist Jeff Babko.

On Friday evening, the Saturday Night Live alumni delivered a seemingly un-rehearsed showing of slapstick banter and self-demeaning jokes suitable between two longtime friends. For those who have yet to watch the Netflix special, the live show was a near duplicate performance where “insert here” opportunities were filled with “Sacramento,” while a few fresh jokes came to life before the mostly older crowd.

The two showmen took turns leading the show with veteran-level dominance that felt like the audience had walked into a comedy class where two tenured professors shared stories from their beloved Hollywood days, with a defiance for reverence. A portion of the evening featured “rare family photos” shared on the jumbotron as Martin and Short held a friendly roast competition, which would later turn into a celebrity roast of public figures, such as Kim Kardashian, Bernie Sanders, Wayne Newton, Queen Elizabeth II and others.

As many people know, Martin and Short met during the filming of the 1986 film ‘The Three Amigos,’ which went on to spark a comedic chemistry and friendship that still holds value today. In a special moment, Friday evening’s show welcomed three audience members to learn the official Three Amigos salute. With no way to prepare for the audience members’ cooperation, Martin and Short had the opportunity to strut their comedic impulses in interacting with the three fans, creating a highlight of the night.

Martin would eventually accompany The Steep Canyon Rangers for a few songs with his banjo, where his mostly glum demeanor shone some honest joy for playing the banjo. Similarly, Short would have the opportunity to clown around in several ridiculous costume changes where his theater background was able to run free and often steal the show.

While there was an undeniable fondness for to the two men leading the evening on Friday, the aptly named tour had no more than a handful of moments that could not be seen on their Netflix special. Only time will tell if their time in Sacramento was enough to leave a memento.

’An Evening You Will Forget for the Rest of Your Life’ continues throughout North America this 2018, with an upcoming August performance in Livermore, CA.
