4 Best Places to Watch New Year’s Fireworks

new year's fireworks

There are New Year’s parties and events galore throughout Sacramento this weekend, but none are bigger and brighter than the city’s New Year’s Eve Sky Spectacular.

With a 20-minute fireworks display set for a 9pm show, Old Sacramento invites the community to come down for an all-evening event, starting a 6pm with live entertainment and family-friendly activities and extending into the evening at any of the New Year’s celebrations taking place at restaurants and bars throughout the district.

The fireworks show this year puts all its energy into one extended show instead of two shorter ones, as they have done in previous years (at 9pm and 12am). This means singles, couples, friends, and families alike can celebrate the New Year in spectacular style while still being able to count down the year’s final seconds at any of the city’s other New Year’s events (or in the comfort of their own home).

But where’s the best places to watch the show? Pairing New Year’s events with a fireworks-watching extravaganza, here are the city’s best seats for a memorable show:

Old Sacramento & the Riverfront

The fireworks will dazzle the skies above the river along Old Sac, so the obvious first choice is to join the crowds in the streets of Old Sacramento and along the riverfront. Celebrations at this free event will start early at 6pm with live music by the kid-friendly Hipwaders and family activities such as face painting and the roaming of superhereos throughout the evening. There’s an obvious focus on drawing families to the pre-fireworks show, so if that’s not your thing, arrive early just to parking’s sake and find a spot to enjoy the show anywhere in the vicinity of the Tower Bridge and Old Sacramento. More info at nyesacramento.com.

Delta King

The city’s waterfront boat hotel and restaurant has no shortage of options for those wishing to reserve a spot for one of the best seats in the city. Two of the packages—the Suspects Murder Mystery Dinner and Overnight Party Package—are sold out, but there is still availability for the Pilothouse Dinner Package and Fireworks Party Package. Both, of course, include on-deck viewing of fireworks with the Fireworks Party including live music in the Delta Bar & Grill, dancing, party favors, and a champagne toast at 12am. The Pilothouse package includes an elegant four-course dinner at the Pilothouse Restaurant in addition to the Fireworks Party Package. More info at deltaking.com.

Rio City Cafe

A four-course meal, three drink tickets, live music, dancing, party favors, champagne toast at midnight, and front row seats to the fireworks show. What could be better? Join guests at the riverfront restaurant to ring in the new year with an all-evening event and awesome fireworks-watching. More info at eventbrite.com.

Hornblower River Cruise

Putting the “spectacular” in the New Year’s Eve Sky Spectacular, the Hornblower River Cruise promises a winning view of the fireworks show on the very river the show will magnify. The one-hour cruise includes background music, limited concessions, a glass of champagne for a New Year’s toast, and, of course, fabulous viewing of the fireworks show. The boat departs at 8:30pm.
