Enjoy the Zoo Grown-Up Style at Wine & Brew at the Zoo

If you’ve ever attended one the Sacramento Zoo’s after-hour events such as Twilight Thursdays or Ice Cream Safari you know there’s something special about roaming the zoo in the early hours of the evening. With the sun draped behind the zoo’s large trees, the warm of the day turning to cool and animals who are less active during the day coming to life at night, the zoo transforms into a place to unwind and enjoy the season’s extended days.

Add to that the presence of nearly three dozen local wineries and breweries and multiple food trucks, and you have an event that’s worth putting on your calendar.

Hosted this Saturday, May 14 and recommended for a 21+ audience, Wine & Brew at the Zoo invites guests to enjoy a relaxing evening wandering the zoo and sampling good eats and drinking fare from local vintners and brewers such as Barefoot Wine, Shenandoah Vineyards, Bogle Vineyards, Yolo Brewing Company, New Helvetia Brewing Co., Bike Dog Brewing Company and so many more.

For those of you with kids in your life in some form, think of it as a chance to experience the zoo the grown-up way.

“When you think of the zoo you usually think of coming with your children or your grandchildren or your school groups,” said Tonja Candelaria, Public Relations Coordinator for Sacramento Zoo. “This is an evening event for an older audience…where guests can just come and wander the zoo at their own pace, see the animals as it’s starting to get dark outside and enjoy some wine and beer and food trucks from the region.”

The event is one of an expanding array of events the zoo hosts throughout the year. From summer concerts to Star Wars Days to 5ks to overnight campouts, the zoo always has something going on for groups of all ages. Not only do the events allow guests to uniquely experience the zoo, but they also help raise needed funds to keep the zoo going.

“Sacramento Zoo is a nonprofit, so we rely heavily upon our community and support from the community to continue running, to continuing helping support conservation and to give these animals that live here amazing care,” said Candelaria. “Wine & Brew at the Zoo is going to be a great event…because guests are having a really great time in a wonderful environment and supporting the zoo at the same time. It’s a two-for-one deal.”

In addition to a wide variety of wine and beer, food trucks present will include Drewski’s, La Mex Taqueria, GyroStop and the Sweet Spot.

If you’re wondering if there is any food or drink offerings you should be particularly excited about, Candelaria couldn’t resist mentioning Drewski’s rosemary tots but concluded that there are so many great local wineries and breweries that it’s hard to call out any single one.

“We’re excited about all them,” Candelaria said. “We really hope this is a great event to help these companies get the word out about what they do so we can help support them as well.”

Wine & Brew at the Zoo will held 5:30-8:30pm this Saturday. To prepare for the event, the zoo will close at 1:30. See the full list of the event’s wineries and breweries and purchase tickets at saczoo.org.
