The many new dessert places opening in Downtown Davis make it easy to go on a midafternoon or post-dinner sweat treat dessert crawl. The newest dessert shop to add to Davis’ growing dessert scene is The Good Scoop, an organic ice cream shop and the brainchild of siblings Stephen and Marnie Layton.
Partnering with Berkeley-based Tara’s Organic Ice Cream, The Good Scoop, which opened in early-April, serves not only fresh, organic ice cream, but also a menu that changes seasonally.
“They rotate [flavors] throughout the year so as things come into season she makes those into ice cream,” Stephen said, adding, “The ice cream is all about natural flavors and typically has about half as much sugar as your standard ice cream flavor.”
Of the 170 flavors Tara’s offers and in addition to your traditional chocolate, vanilla bean, and strawberry, fun flavors currently include Avocado, Beet Balsamic, Lavender, Geranium, and Rosemary & Salted Almond, among others. Don’t be surprised, though, when you go if you find different flavors than those. Due to the shop’s quickly growing popularity, flavors are now changing almost daily.
Their popularity is not surprising, not only because of the creative (and tasty) ice cream they serve, but also they strive to give back to the community and to put forth environmentally-friendly practices.
Stephen, who works in the environmental field, is serious about the environmentally conscious atmosphere of the shop. The Good Scoop serves their products in compostable packing with napkins, spoons and to-go cups being such. Even better than that, Stephen recommends the non-cup option of homemade cones, which he dubs “the most environmentally friendly way to eat your ice cream.”
Stephen and Marnie also make it a goal to make a positive impact on the community. They plan to integrate their business into the Davis community by donating to the local PTA and the Davis Dance Marathon as well as the Davis Bike Collective and the Davis art school through proceeds from their grand opening.
The Good Scoop is also helping out the worldwide community. Marnie says they are supporting the World Bike Relief (WBR) through “Scoops for Bikes”, an ongoing effort by the ice cream shop to donate 1% of their profits to the Relief. WBR is an organization that gives bikes to students, educators, healthcare workers, and entrepreneurs in rural Africa for the purpose of economic and educational growth.
Whether serving tasty and environmentally friendly products or donating profits for the betterment of communities both local and worldwide, The Good Scoop is good for more the one reason.
The Good Scoop is located at 130 G Street in Davis. They offer free wifi and also serve pour over Stumptown coffee, cold brew, and tea. Their current hours are Sunday-Wednesday 12pm-10pm and Thursday-Saturday 12pm-12am.
