The grand opening of SusieCakes’ newest location in the Pavillion Shopping Center just made Sacramento a whole lot sweeter.
SusieCakes Bakery, whose first location opened in Southern California in 2006, kicked off opening week Jan. 24 with various specials such as Cupcake Happy Hour (buy-one-get-one free cupcakes), After-School Snack Day (free mini-cupcakes for kids with purchase), and Friday’s finale event, Celebrate Your Sweetie, where couples who purchased a generously cut slice of cake for their sweetie received a second free.
According to staff member Kelly Hall, the response from the community of SusieCakes coming to Sacramento has been great—and the busyness of opening week is proof!
The founder and CEO of SusieCakes, Chicago native Susan Sarich, began her business using the recipes of her beloved grandmothers, Mildred and Madeline. Sarich’s love for bakeries originated from the sweet tradition of enjoying a fresh baked good after school made by her grandmothers, who she says she honors through SusieCakes.
Since it’s first shop in Brentwood, the bakery has expanded to 13 locations throughout California and has 2 more coming soon. With so many bakeries around, what makes SusieCakes so different that it’s able to grow into so many locations?
Unlike some bakeries, SusieCakes’ treats are made from scratch with all-natural ingredients that don’t have any preservatives in them. The shop allows guests to see through their kitchen window the fresh ingredients they put into their pastries, which includes not only cakes and cupcakes, but also pudding, pies, cookies and bars.
They also emphasize not simply having your filled, but working with “celebration specialists” who ensure you have all you need for whatever your celebration is. They make custom hand-drawn designs, that may take anywhere from minutes to hours.
In all, Sarich sets out to provide what she calls “neighborhood, scratch bakeries” featuring a feel of home-style comfort.
“My goal for the shop is for us to be known as Sacramento’s go-to place for all things celebration,” said Sarich. “That people come to think about SusieCakes for their every day celebrations–for me, that would be the hallmark of success.”
With the focus on celebration and a back-to-basics desert concept, it’s no surprise that Sarich’s personal favorite is a six layer Vanilla Celebration Cake. Just looking at the cake feels like a celebration with the frosting colored in their signature “Susie blue” and the inside filled with colorful confetti. Taking a bite into the rich, sweet, moist cake is truly a savory treat that will leave your mouth watering for more.
Some of Sarich’s other menu favorites include their whoopie pies and Susie’s Famous Southern Red Velvet Cake.
Aside from offering freshly baked sweets, SusieCakes also delivers and donates locally, offers tastings, and uses recycled bags and paper products.
