Before the screening began DJ Whores entertained at the bar in the lobby where fans enjoyed some of their favorite alcoholic drinks.
The movie screening documents the last few days of LCD Soundsystem. Part of the focus also covers their last show held at Madison Square Garden.
The screening played for one night only, on July 18 in 19 theaters throughout the U.S. The one-day showing has now been extended and will play at many more theaters beginning this week. The movie will play at the Tower Theater on August 1.
LCD Soundsystem fans at the Crest clapped at the end of songs being played on the big screen. Appreciation for the movie was apparent and the end of the film also received an ovation from fans at the Crest.
Launch Events had a table in the lobby where tickets to Launch were being sold and included other information on the event. Launch Events’ Michael Hargis and Clay Nutting also attended to answer questions fans might have.
The screening of Shut up and Play the Hits also served to showcase the commitment and appreciation Launch has for music.
Since Sacramento’s Launch music and design festival has continued to grow every year so does the quality of musicians, artists, fashion and furniture designers and other artistic entertainment.
Last year’s event at the Greens Hotel showed that the one day event needed to expand as well. As a result of the growth his year’s Launch will take place at different midtown and downtown venues and will be a six day series of events.
On Saturday, July 28 an all-day concert featuring nearly 20 musical acts will be held at Cesar Chavez Plaza.
When asked about the evening’s event Hargis said, “This is Shut up and Play the Hits, tonight is the world premier of the movie and it’s playing all around the United States. It’s about LCD Soundsystem and their last few days and what the group was all about and what they went through.”
Inside the theater guests waited in anticipation and could still hear DJ Whores’ set from their seats.
Before the actual movie screening began Launch Events’ Nutting spoke about the show and Launch.
Nutting gave a short rundown on what to expect during Launch 2012 saying, “We have six days of events starting on Monday July 23rd and ends on July 28 with a big festival at Cesar Chavez Plaza. Performing will be Chromeo, Grouplove, The Joy Formidable, chk, chk, chk (!!!) Gardens and Villa, the line up just goes on and on. We feel that we’ve worked really hard to put together a very compelling and unique event that showcases a lot of local talent and a lot of emerging artists. We hope you’ll get out there and support us.”
Launch has received much fan support but since the venue has grown so much the support of Sacramento audiences is crucial this year. Nutting continued, “It’s important to have word of mouth so let people know you’re going to Launch and you can use hashtag Launch2012 to let them know you’re going. Please use twitter and other social media to get the word out. We have something special here that we’re trying to make it bigger and better to compete against some other festivals across the country. “
Nutting ended by saying, “Your support is very important to us and we appreciated it."
Comparisons to Coachella, South by Southwest and Launch are being made. Launch Events hopes that it continues to attract fans to the Sacramento festival on a yearly basis. Looking at the caliber of the many musical acts, fashion, architecture and designers that have attended in previous years I can envision Sacramento to one day be known through the U.S. and maybe the world for this event.
After the movie an after party with Shaun Slaughter followed at K BAR which is on the corner of 10th and K Street across from the Crest.
Launch Events has embarked on an ambitious project with Launch 2012 and has worked hard to bring this large venue to Sacramento. Their hard work, organization and perseverance have the potential to pay off and can help get other name acts to attend the yearly Launch festival.
