The city is looking into the feasibility of a plan brought forth by the Sacramento Area Bicycle Advocates to make the Carlson Corridor, the intersection located at Carlson and H and J streets, safer for cyclists. We’re looking at how the elements laid out in the plan would improve or enhance all modes of transportation for the corridor,” City Traffic Engineer Hector Barron said. “Right now, it’s all very preliminary in nature because it takes time to get through the process of evaluation.” Once the evaluation process is finished, the focus will be shifted to seeing how much the plan would cost to implement, followed by locating money sources — something Barron said won’t happen for a whi
Whether you’ll admit it or not, you’ve probably caught yourself belting a few lines of Bohemian Rhapsody while you’re in the shower. Or, perhaps, you’re a firm believer in blasting the radio and singing along to Adele (or Gotye) in the car instead. So, why not take all that hidden talent to the many stages of Sacramento’s karaoke scene? Here are some of your options: The Distillery 7 days a week, 9 p.m. 2107 L St. This local dive is known for its affordable, strong drinks as well as its dedication to making every night a sing-along night. On its website, the Distillery said that as of January of last year, management decided to cancel booking live bands in exchange for karaoke — good ne
Every morning, Sacramento resident Brian Lambert bikes through the trio of intersections in front of Sacramento State, and it’s one of the most stressful parts of his commute from Tahoe Park to North Highlands. “The area is pretty complicated and not something you want to cross,” Lambert said. “Right there at H Street and Carlson, if you have to turn and there’s another lane coming from the other direction, it’s pretty scary.” The route, called the Carlson Corridor, connects Sacramento State, the American River Parkway Bike Trail, River Park and East Sacramento, and saw two cyclists deaths in the last two years alone. Those accidents and continued complaints from bicyclists drew the atte
The curious greyish orange mass that fuels the fermentation process used in brewing kombucha tea looks like a cross between a flattened jellyfish and a rubbery pancake. Located at the bottom of the brewing jar, it helps create a carbonated, fermented tea that is full of probiotics and live cultures. This amber-hued concoction is growing in popularity in the health food realm for its reservoir of health benefits, and will soon carve its very own niche in Sacramento. Kombucha Kulture, a mobile draft kombucha trailer, should be ready to roll with the rest come the end of August, co-owner Brianne Giatras said. While the original plan was to raise money via Kickstarter to back a brick-and-mor
Right in the heart and commotion of the Midtown bar scene, a calming, peaceful urban sanctuary for the body, soul and spirit serves Mayan spice chocolate French toast with a side of Tibetan bowl sound therapy, or perhaps a cocoa butter massage, to people seeking nourishment and relaxation. This multi-faceted center of well-being, Ancient Future, is located at 2331 K St. and opened its doors and its arms to the public on July 1. “It’s been rewarding seeing the vision come alive and watching people in the space being able to take a nice deep breath and enjoy themselves and one another,” owner Teresa Flint said. “I really want this space to be a gathering place for the community.” Ancient F

Conversation about: ANALYSIS: Freeport bike lane faces challenges, including opposition from residents
While I understand the views expressed by residents who may "have to use their driveways" or fight for limited street parking, I feel that this is something people should have thought about before buying or renting in a heavily trafficked area. We are a city that boasts tons of cyclists, and there's going to have to be some sort of compromise surrounding this area (I'm really glad the problem is being addressed in the first place). As an avid cyclist living in Curtis Park, I've seen multiple collisions on this stretch and personally been "doored" twice just fighting for a space to ride. Also, there will always be those outside the law, but most of us "tree hugging" cyclists are definitely not rogue fighters hell bent on running lights and dodging stop signs for fun. I'll stay positive and hope that this stretch will become safer for all!
