It sounds exciting!! Finally the Kings are trying to assemble a good team. Let's pray these young players shall share the ball and play together. Practice! Practice! Practice with each other, get to know your teammates moves, protect THAT ball as it goes from player to player (teammate to teammate). Guard your opponent like WHITE ON RICE ( YOU FELLOWS KNOW WHAT THAT OLD EXPRESSION MEANS). Have FAITH IN YOURSELF AND YOUR TEAMMATES. With out faith you are lost at the beginning.....no need to go out on the floor. YOU ARE PAID WELL...SO DO YOUR JOB WELL. GOOD LUCK AND GOD BLESS. Stan ( a supporter since 1985).

Not only is quality getting better, but the depth-chart is much cleaner and more defined. The C and PF positions are manned by an established, proven starter (Dalembert, Landry), backed by a youngster with lots of upside (Cousins, Thompson). The SF position is the most interesting, but is definitely better than it was last year; and a nice, flexible 4-guard rotation. Except for the SFs, the hierarchy is well-defined and non-controversial. This should help establish the right expectations for players, coaches, and fans.

Certainly things could change: DMC might (should) end up starting; Casspi and Greene are still young and unreliable; and Evans might hit a sophomore slump. But all in all, very promising.

If only the Brockness Monster was still around, I'd be even happier :(

The evolution of the roster in recent quarters is evidence not so much of a team in transition, but of a team committed to getting back to the top. Each change shows considerable quality improvement. Of course, chemistry on the court is the ultimate deciding factor. I think we're as close as we've been in a long time.

Let's not forget Whiteside. Many people considered him lottery pick material. Bob Aram had him as high as #2 on the Big Board. Considering many had Cousins as a #1 pick, but for an alleged "attitude" that I have seen absolutely no evidence of whatsoever, I'd say the Kings may very well have had the best draft in the league. With those two talented bigs to build around, and with Beno and Pooh Jeter splitting time at the point, Tyreke will be much more versatile as a true 2-guard. The question is how the LTD trio will fit into that.

The Kings were able to draft by need and best player available in the draft. We were somehow able to draft a projected lottery selection with our second round pick and were able to get the most NBA ready big man in the draft. The Kings went from having one seven footer to becoming one of the biggest rosters Sacramento has seen ever. Hopefully the players make a smooth transition into the NBA. We will be able to get a taste of what they both have starting in July with the Las Vegas Summer League.

The team went from having Spencer Hawes as its only true center to trading him for a proven defender in Dalembert and drafting Cousins and Whiteside.
I am VERY excited to see how he melds with the team. He had the talent to be the first overall pick, only questions about his attitude allowed him to fall to the Kings at 5. The Kings also got Hassan Whiteside, who many experts had as a possible lottery pick, in the 2nd round. Fantastic draft for the home team. They could really use a playmaking point guard, but they are well on there way to being competitive again. I wish I could say the same about my Warriors. Ugh.

Hawes had three years in Sacramento to prove his worth and he wasn't what the Kings thought he would be. So off he goes to Philly and in comes Dalembert.

The Kings basically traded for a year long workout of Dalembert. He will have a year to try out for a contract next season. He's a defensive presence down low that the Kings definitely needed. Originally I thought the trade meant the Kings didn't like any of the big man enough to take them with the fifth pick, but the Kings now have a chance to secure some guys down low. Landry, Thompson, Dalembert and Cousins aren't a bad group of big man to build around.

an event like this is better suited in an area that is less mixed use and more strictly commercial. As an example, Vallejo's at 11th and O had a cinco de mayo party that was pretty loud but no residences are nearby. Their location at 14th & O next to residences does not do parties like this. Ernesto on the other hand often does big events at Zocalo not necessarily compatible with a mixed use area - as there are many residences nearby so loud street parties are not well suited here - a restaurant is fine but not a full blown street party. What other neighborhoods in this city deal with street closures and block parties as part of their daily routine? Put yourself in our shoes and imagine dealing with this on a regular basis? We have great spaces for this sort of thing like Capitol Mall and parts of K Street yet we aren't using them. Instead we're saturating Midtown and making it barely liveable with an overconcentration / overabundance of street parties. Spread the joy around and branch out to other areas as well. The businesses who profit from the image of Midtown need to show some respect for the people who live here and make it great place to be.

Sports is an integral part of culture and country. Perhaps a quick reading of history will demonstrate the extent to which sport has been the basis for peace, unity, and discourse. Whether we look back upon the history of the Olympics, or we delve into the history of the World Cup(s), it appears clear one of the many components of national (and international) sentiment is embodied in sports. The community is a microcosm. That 1000 people came out to show support, celebrate, and contribute to the local economy is fantastic. That the Kings came away with the 5th pick in a draft that features 8-10 strong potentials is just fine. Let's not forget that Tyreke Evans was the 4th pick last year. Geoff Petrie did an excellent job selecting him, and I have no doubt he'll select another great player again this year.

Lance probably paid for the police force. Who knew he was so sensitive over one stolen bike last year? I wouldn't know since I was there more as a spectator and a helping hand for KCRA rather than a journalist, but that's a very good question to ask SacPD and CHP.

I understand why they have so much of the force out there. So many people to keep under control in and around the sport's biggest event on this continent not only downtown, but around the whole route from here to Nevada City. So many of those cyclists could get hurt if even one spectator tries to do something crazy and causes the peloton (pack of cyclists) to crash. Only two were injured on the final laps going around the Capitol.

According to the ATOC, the whole tour brought in 2 million spectators last year and $100 million to the cities that hosted it. I imagine Sacto. got a good chunk of change out of this as well.

Even though the RekeROY campaign is officially over, I hope you guys enjoy my future work here on SP. So to end the campaign on a good note I just posted a story about Reke getting his trophy at the press conference and the celebration rally that followed it.

Hope you like it as much as you did this one and thanks again everyone.

Nice article. I was unaware that Tyreke got an invite to the U.S. team for the FIBA Championship this summer, awesome! Although Steph Curry and Brandon Jennings were certainly deserving, I'm glad the 'Reke got the award as he had to become the leading scorer of a young team in his first year while the former two were surrounded by other scorers.

Honey, chill....

My initial comment on this page had to do with all of the local hype about this one basketballer and its relationship to the arena 'deal'.

Then YOU hurled invective at ME.

But you failed to realize that as an old queen, I've faced ninnies like you all my life, and I spit back better than you offered, and that must just gall a Rhodes Scholar like you....

And in fact, I *never* hurl invective at another commenter first -- unless their comments are so stupid as to warrant some riposte.

But when some jerk faces me, I return with both barrels, and I'm rather good at it. And that just pisses people like you off to high heaven...

Fine with me....

And I stand by my initial assertion -- there seems to be a concerted effort to overhype all things basketball to prop up waning support for this 'three card monty' 'deal' that will, for a variety of reasons that you and yours probably can't fathom, cost taxpayers a load of cash at a time when there are so many other priorities at hand, like poverty, homelessness, healthcare, etc., all of which are on the chopping block locally because of an economic meltdown unseen since the Great Depression.

If basketball is your priority, so be it. It isn't mine, and it ought not be our community's to the tune of $4 billion this 'deal' is inevitably going to cost....

I'll be at the presser and planning on attending the rally if there is one.

Good reporting. It's great to see Tyreke win the award. In all the negative banter that followed, I can't remember whether there's a date set for a presentaton and celebration at Arco Arena. Can you please write another article and speak to that?

The unfortunate consequence of long-winded negative banter is that it often drowns out the critical details and message within the primary text. Not only do I not remember, but I am reluctant to look back up there. Plain and simple, the negativity makes things ugly.

To be clear, I'll state my position regarding the arena issue that has been raised in these comments. Arco Arena has done a good job as a venue for events in the community for many years. A new arena built on the current railyard site is something I support. A public-private partnership is something I support. A bond to provide the public portion of development funds is unpopular, but it is something I support.

However, unless I'm writing specifically about an arena deal, I won't be writing about an arena deal. There's an old saying - if it's not on the page, it's not on the page. You can count on me not to be talking about what I'm not expressly talking about. That seems logical and simple enough.

Keep it civil, keep it clean, keep it as accurate and transparent as possible. Anything less than that should be flagged and deleted. I'm all for an insurgent mirror site with hot links to reference content elsewhere. Those committed to such a village voice should go ahead and create that. I'll contribute there regarding things I disagree with.

Returning to the point of this article, cheers to Tyreke, and GO KINGS!

Look, I'm not going to waste too much time.

First off, Michael Morris, a good friend of mine from school, didn't respond to you. Being a member of the media, you get to go to games for free, meaning I spent $0 for anything there. Sac City, what you expected Sac State, UC Davis?

I said that SP isn't a pawn for KJ and you did. "I commend SP for its mission, but they need to be more careful about acting as the face of the mayor and his suckups by challenging the veracity and purpose of stories leaked or brought by them..."

http://sacramentopress.com/headline/25463/City_Council_unanimously_agrees_to_hire_consultant_for_audit

That is you, right?

You also commented on Mike's Kings story when it mentioned nothing about a supporting a new arena or how winning a game would help them get an arena. Just a Kings win. "One win ain't gonna get 'em that there arena."

http://sacramentopress.com/headline/24398/Kings_streaking_comes_to_an_end

That's you too, right? You seem to like to bring up the arena issue when the Kings are involved in a story. That's proven in Mike's story and your first comment above in this article. Am I wrong anywhere. Point it out.

What you call tripe is really truth and I don't need Google to look up the 669 comments you wrote on this site to prove my point.

I've read what you've wrote. You insult readers and writers who have a different opinion than you and take away from the article that was written. I don't care how many comments you have all over the Internet the past 10 years. It still adds up to no articles.

You haven't even proved that I'm wrong in what I say with anything other than what you write. Back it up, show some facts. Type in whatever you want after this. I'll read it, but I'm done talking.

Ok bbbbmer. Every Kings and arena article written on SP is really meant to get readers to vote yes for a new arena. Really?

If I write about the Sacramento River Cats am I trying to say the Cats need a new stadium? If I write about NBA draft prospects passing through Sac am I trying to convince people to watch college basketball? I plan on writing about both very soon but not for those reasons.

Go through the 31 articles I’ve written on SP and you find that I’ve written about the arena issue as many times as you’ve posted an article on this site. Zero.

This article is strictly about the Tyreke winning ROY and nothing else, no matter what you think.

I love writing about the Kings and the NBA and I was fortunate enough to be born in a city with a franchise.

I’m a student at Sac City College about to get my AA in journalism and transferring to Azusa Pacific in the fall to further my studies. I’m also a sports writer for the school’s paper Express and previously worked on the online version www.saccityexpress.com last semester.

For almost 4 months I worked beside SP staff and the interns and they’ve done nothing wrong in terms of journalism. They report the facts and they’re unbiased. Journalism is not pure investigative journalism into every hard hitting issue Sac has. There’s a lot more to Sac than that – sports teams, entertainment, community events, and more. They’re not KCRA or SacBee but they do a good job at what they do.

I came onto SacPress when my instructor gave me an assignment and told my classmates to post it on this site.

http://sacramentopress.com/headline/16755/Mayor_Johnson_Operation_Sellout_on_track

For my final project I chose to do a personality profile and I wanted to do it on Tyreke. I got permission from the Kings, went to a few practices and a game turned in my story and posted here.

http://sacramentopress.com/headline/19312/Kings_rookie_Evans_among_the_best_in_the_NBA

SP liked my story, and when the Kings wanted to start the Tyreke Evans ROY campaign with them, they asked me and I accepted, They also brought on Marty Mac to write recaps of the Kings game. So every article after January under the RekeROY storyline is for that campaign, nothing else.

SP is not a pawn for KJ, an arena plan or anything for that matter. They don’t praise one thing and shoot down all who oppose it. They do their jobs as journalists and run a respectable publication.

If you have anything to blame SP for their KJ coverage, blame that they’re 5 blocks away from City Hall, closer than any other media outlet in town. It’s literally a walk away and the fact that Kathleen goes to the press conference every Tuesday morning means that they care about covering events that involves the city’s mayor, no matter who that may be now or in the future.

So, bbbbmer, before you go judging an article based on something entirely off topic, get off the comment thread and write an article like many other community contributors on this site do and back it up.

You think that articles on the Kings and updates on the arena issue are meant to “convince voters to support the arena 'deal”?

Everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but what you wrote is baseless, false and, truthfully, unintelligent.

Whenever it is announced, I think its gonna be very close. Curry came on like gangbusters at the end of the year. Couple that with Reke missing a bunch of time late, and I think it's really a toss up.

I'm glad Mr. Johnson had a conversation with the CEO of Macy*s. The downtown store is the best one in the region although it might not be the most profitable in the region. Losing Macy*s would be catastrophic for downtown. What better a place to put residential towers than the current downtown plaza minus the Macy*s buildings. Preseve the existing landmarks and rehab the other older structures on the 700 & 800 blocks and use the 500 & 600 blocks for new construction.

Blah, blah blah....

Mr. Bloomberg is posing for a 2012 run against Obama after having merely eked out a third term in office with growing angst about his incumbency, particularly his intervention into schools and his charterization efforts merely gutting the public out of public ed. Diane Ravitch's new book on America's schools INDICTS Bloomberg's efforts at merely painting a picture of success instead of actually improving education in any way... THIS will be the issue on the horizon as public school advocates and the teachers who face these issues day after day now have ammunition to return the fire of NCLB and RTTT programs which perpetuate blaming teachers for what are more structural failures in public ed across the nation...

As for DTPlaza and its Macy's anchor, an answer will have to grow organically amid the changing marketplace and the decline of the malling of America... This issue is no doubt more than this mayor can grasp and I pray he didn't just appear foolish before the far more sophisticated and erudite retailer...

While KJ may be intent on retaining Das Kings, movement abounds undercurrent that suggests that the franchise and its superiors may be forced to consolidate in some yet to be specified way -- but the team's owners are heading into new treacherous territory where their interests are concerned, especially with regard to a massive re-setting of commercial real estate valuations that could impact the feasibility of even remaining in Sacramento altogether, let alone successfully...

Lord, I hope this mayor's term is up soon -- he's just so much fluff and strut, all hat and no cattle... Surely Sacramento deserves better...
