I attended the PAC 12 men's and women's rowing championships held at Lake Natoma last weekend. The preliminaries were held on Saturday with the finals starting Sunday morning at 9 AM. I captured photos of the preparation areas for the races, the races themselves and the awards ceremony. It was a beautiful day to be out on the lake and while there was only one winner in each category everyone seemed very pleased with the event.

Here are the photos.

The Whole Earth Festival was held for the 43rd time on the UC Davis campus over the weekend of May 10-12, 2013.

Vendors, artists, performers, cooks, and the general public were part of an inspiring and fun event that highlighted the experience of the wholeness of the earth.

From the Whole Earth Festival website .

“Whole Earth Festival was born when an art class taught by Jose Arguelles had an “Art Happening” on the University of California, Davis campus in 1969. The students used art to involve visitors in the ultimate goal of learning about activism, wellness, and the environment. Whole Earth Festival aims to ignite passion, propel creativity, and leave visitors with inspiration.

Following the United Nations declaration of “Earth Day” in 1970, the third “Art Happening” in 1971 was renamed “Whole Earth.” Later, Whole Earth Festival was sponsored by the Associated Student’s Experimental College, and has since become a self-sustaining unit.”

I attended the Sunday afternoon festivities and was able to experience a wide range of the people and activities that have been the hallmark of the festival for the past 42 years. In addition, I watched the closing ceremonies as Sunny brought the weekend to an end.
Here are pictures of the events, people, and activities that I experienced.

Angels, and faeries, oh my!

Vendors lined the four sides of the UC Davis Quad, showing off food, jewelry, arts, and crafts.

Colorful animals abound.

A stong theme of the weekend was awareness and education about a 'whole earth' approach to living.

Jesters, and tricksters.

Young angels at play.

The public writhed in time to the music of the Tempest, a Celtic rock band.

Tempest band lead.

People were led in a circle dance by Tempest.

Dad, why is everyone going in a circle?

A round of unison clapping and singing by the audience and Tempest.

There were wild folks and

and young innocent folks.

Sunny starting the closing ceremonies.

Closing the event.

Even guests from Bhutan were in attendance to chant and sing the festival to a close.

The art studio trek of Roseville, Rocklin, and Granite Bay was held over the weekend of April 27th and 28th, 2013. 21 artists came together to showcase their art work throughout the area. Photography, mixed media art, paintings, jewelry, and sculpture were assembled at 15 locations for the general public to appreciate and purchase. I had the opportunity to visit a small subset of the artists, learn about their craft, and appreciate their work. Photos of my visit are included below.

Lorelee Love has been involved in ceramics for over 23 years working on her craft part time while working full time. She now devotes all of her time to her pottery. Lorelee continues to enhance her education with classes at Sierra College. Her latest work is Raku where she uses her home built kiln and mixes her own glazes. Her signature pottery includes leaves carved into the pottery.

Interested trekkers look over Chris Foster's paintings and calligraphy, and Barbara Kee's glass jewelry.

Judi Stickney is a stone carver and sculptor. She has been carving stone in the Sacramento area since 1994. Her process begins with a small polymer clay model of the carving. She uses this to craft the full size stone carving. In some cases her work has been used to create bronze castings.

She caters to private and corporate collections throughout California and across the US. Her work has been represented in galleries throughout the state most recently at the Crocker Art Museum Invitational and has won several top awards.

Much like when the stone is polished and finished spraying water on raw stone shows off the beautiful grain in the stone.

The Sacramento Taiko Dan ensemble invited artists of the Japanese group Wariki, Akira and Raiya Katogi to the event. They performed a number of traditional Japanese art forms and dances. The father and son duo are two of the Wariki troupe and began a continent wide tour here in Sacramento that will include stops in New Mexico, Toronto, and other cities.

Enjoy the pictures and videos of this captivating art form.

The Taiko drums await the performers.

Our master of ceremonies, Tiffany, welcomes everyone.

Several hundred attendees were treated to thunderous drum performances drawing them into the spirit and passion of the taiko drum.

Akira Katogi shows off his 'top' form. He did some amazing tricks with it.

Getting ready to spin the top.

The Sacramento Taiko Dan ensemble gets ready.

And the thunder begins.

The youth drummers

This short video show the main drum being played

Raiya Katogi plays a traditional string instrument while his father plays the drum.

The dance of the lion includes audience participation. The essence of the story is that the lion dances to get the attentioin of all the bad spirits inside the people.

It then instructs the people to be ready for the lion to attack the spirits and bite them away from the people or in this case the audience.

Akira as the lion then goes into the crowd and with the mouth of the lion attacks the bad spirits and removes them from the people.

Taiko Dan at its best.

Akira and Raiya show their considerable Taiko Dan skills.

Here is a short video of the father and son team on the drum.

Akira in full regalia.

Raiya on the drum.

Raiya plays a solo on a traditional 3 string instrument.

Part of the finale performance. Check out the slideshow for more pictures of the Taiko Dan ensemble.

Akira and Raiya at the end of the moving performance.

The Sacramento Kennel Club is hosting the 2013 SKC Dog Show this weekend. The show has been running since Thursday and will run through Sunday until 4 PM. My wife and I, admitted dog lovers, toured the show and I was able to get the following photos of the various activities. If you love animals, pets, and especially dogs, consider going out to the show tomorrow at Cal Expo between the hours of 7am and 4pm. Most of the judging takes place in the middle of the day so plan accordingly. Enjoy your virtual pets and woofs!

Reluctantly this sheltie gets ready for the show.

It was hard work for everyone.

So peaceful, this Golden Retreiver was a pleasure to photograph.

Last week I published a photo essay on the start of the demolition of the existing remnants of the McKinley Park Children's Playground. (click here) . After a week of delays due to rain and soggy ground phase 2 of this demolition began Thursday morning. Here are the photos of the complete preparation process of the site in anticipation of the rebuild to begin in June.

Barry Metcalf, of American Technologies, Inc. oversees the beginning of the demolition. American Technologies Inc. and its partners have donated the resources needed to complete the demolition phase of the project.

One of the two Bobcat front loaders is readied.

The first cut into the wooden structures.

Almost there.

One down, a few dozen to go. (It would take all day Thursday and half of Friday to clear the site)

Bobcat power was only part of the equation. The workers carried logs away, cut the structure apart, and were the real power in this demolition.

Partially demolished turrret play area. The turrets themselves were auctioned off the previous week.

This worker is struggling with one of the floor sections of the turret structures.

What was once there.......

is now demolished.

From a different angle.

Several old items will be incorporated into the new playground area.

Another floor piece is taken away by a air powered spear on one of the Bobcats.

Most of the above ground structures have been removed.

The Bobcats were used to pry the support posts and the attached concrete anchor sections out of the ground.

These two lions went from a full structure around them

to a big mess behind them

to piles of dirt.

Finally, Friday saw the completion of the demolition work. The lions have a nice smooth dirt playground behind them and the site is ready to be rebuilt.

It's on to the next phase of the project, the rebuilding of the playground. If you would like to find out more, or volunteer time, energy, or resources check out www.rebuildmckinley.org.

Efforts to rebuild the fire-damaged McKinley Park playground hit a milestone when its destruction and demolition began bright and early Thursday morning. Most of the playground, which fell victim to arson last year, was auctioned off Wednesday evening. American Technologies Inc. was on site Thursday morning to disassemble the structure so that auctioned items could be removed. The demoliton of the standing supports will be Thursday, Aprill 11 – weather permiting.

The 89th Camellia show of Sacramento sponsored by the Camellia Society of Sacramento was held Saturday and Sunday at Memorial Auditorium. As one of the largest camellia shows in the US, this year's show was a testament to the popularity of this plant in Northern California.

According to Don Lesmeister, show organizer, northern California and specifically Sacramento has the best terroir for this plant in the US. Blossoms are larger, more robust, and generally healthier than in other areas of the US. Don tells the story of one blossom that won 2nd prize in a northern California Camellia show being placed into the owner's refrigerator for a week and then being flown out to a show in the southern States only to take top blossom at the show!

30+ judges had their work cut out for them choosing amongst several thousand plants for the best blossoms in a number of show categories. Below are examples of the beautiful blossoms that made either the initial or final cuts at the show.

Carol Schanz, president of the Camellia Society of Sacramento, showed me around the auditorium, highlighting the show area for the blossoms and the various exhibits surrounding the show area.

The photo contest winners are displayed. Entries containing camellias were judged in several categories both serious, humorous, with and without people, or just blossoms.

Actual camellia plants were available for sale at the show, thanks to Green Acres nursery.

Sacramento's Japanese sister city, Matsuyama, displayed crafts and goods associated with camellias.

Interior designs leveraging the visual impact of the camellia were provided by the Floral Design Guild.

Sunday's schedule included a 'Paint In' where artists painted camellias and competed for 'President's Choice' and 'Peoples' Choice' awards. A portion of the proceeds from the sale of the paintings goes to the Camellia Society of Sacramento.

The judging of the flowers took place in rounds. In the first round 6-9 of each category of blossoms was separated from all the entries. From these flowers best in show was chosen. In all 49 trophies were presented this year.

Best in show flower went to Don and Joan Lesmeister. Congratulations!

All the winning entries are shown on tables. It truly was an impressive display of camellias.

Naima Mora, winner of Cycle 4 of America’s Next Top Model, gave aspiring local models and designers a peek into the world of top fashion Tuesday afternoon as part of Sacramento’s Fashion Week.

Naima and Gerry Simpson, local artist, photographer, and past model himself, offered advice through a one hour presentation and follow on Q&A session at the International Academy of Design and Technology.

Naima recently published her first book, entitled Model Behavior, and was available after the lecture for book signing. Tracy Saville, Naima’s publisher was on hand to help promote the book.

Naima and Gerry suggest that aspiring models and designers follow their dreams and passion in the pursuit of success in the fashion industry. Topics such as the evolution of a model’s career and how to handle rejection were discussed. Both were clear that fashion modeling is a competitive industry and that one must be prepared to accept different roles within the fashion industry if one expects a long and successful career.

An impromptu runway session was conducted after the lecture with attendees strutting their stuff.

A highlight of the runway session was Naima making her way down the ‘catwalk’ at IADT showing off her famous form and personality.

The 2013 season for the Sacred City Derby Girls roller derby teams kicked off Friday night at the Memorial Auditoriium. The three teams – the Roseville Wreckers, Midtown Maulies, and Donna Party – went head-to-head (body to body) in a "friendly" round robin event. No matter who came out the winner there was a lot of pushing around on the track, and not a few falls to the floor. Enjoy the photos as I enjoyed the action!

Jammer E5 of the Roseville Train wreckers gets by the blocking line of the Midtown Maulies.

As you can see, the Maulies were not that happy with the pass!

More shoulder-to-shoulder action between the Train Wreckers and the Donna Party jammer ended up with a bone crunching topple to the floor.

The Donna Party blocking line pushes a Maulie outside of the legal track boundary.

Even if there was stiff competition, a great deal of comaraderie and sportsmanship was displayed by the players.

The referees, while serious in their roles, each have very creative names. This is Y.I. Otter. Others officiating at the event were Marriedjuana, Don Scoreleone, Mav Wreck, MOJO, Buck U Up, Colin M. Fairly, and That One Ref...

Sacramento is the fifth stop on the premier Built Ford Tough Series schedule, and will feature the top 35 bull riders competing with the fiercest bucking bulls. Fans will witness adrenaline-charged eight-second rides, as the Professional Bull Riders’ thrill-seeking cowboys risk it all against their opponents

.The current top three cowboys in the BFTS are Silvano Alves, Douglas Duncan and Jordan Hupp. Expect to see exciting competition between these and other top BFTS riders at Sleep Train Arena.

The ultimate goal for PBR athletes each year is to qualify for the prestigious PBR World Finals in Las Vegas, Nev., where the coveted title of PBR World Champion is decided.

“This is not a rodeo. We don't rope calves, and we don't chase barrels.”

“This is bull riding, and the first rule is just to stay alive.”

Only the sport's best bucking bulls are used at the Professional Bull Riders Built Ford Tough Series events. The PBR ensures that each animal from the pool of bulls used at each event is the highest caliber possible. Most BFTS events feature an estimated 75 bulls.

The other half of the ride is determined by the rider's ability to match the moves of the bull beneath him. Judges look for constant control and good body position throughout the ride. The rider must stay aboard the bull for eight seconds as he rides with one hand.

“2013 marks the 20th year of PBR competition. The world’s premier bull riding organization will award over $10 million, including $2.2 million at the PBR Built Ford Tough World Finals in Las Vegas. It has become one of the fastest-growing sports in history, with more than 100 million worldwide viewers of PBR programming and nearly two million fans who attend PBR live events each year.”

Local city officials oversaw the lighting of the Christmas Tree in Old Sacramento prior to the opening of the Raley's Theatre of Lights for the holiday season 2012. Local celebrity Mark S. Allen kicked things off.

Mayor Kevin Johnson counted down to the lighting of the Christmas tree.

A beautiful evergreen adorned with a changing light pattern was spectacular to see.

The Raley's Theatre of Lights began with the page describing how Old Sacramento would have been in the mid-1800s during the Christmas season.

Now time for the main event, "'Twas the night before Christmas," narrated by Mark Twain.

It actually snowed on the buildings and in the streets of Old Sacramento that night (well, not the real stuff). Our furry friend was awakened by noises on the roof.

Santa and his reindeer have arrived.

Down the chimney with all the toys.

His work done, Santa stops for a quick draw on his pipe.

But before he left, it was time to unveil the theater's Christmas lights and re-light the Christmas tree.

With the audience's help, the lights were lighted and the Christmas tree once again shone with its bright lights.

The Salvation Army band played Christmas carols.

While folks in period costume carolled the night away.

Even St. Nicholas was in attendance.

Mark Allen and Santa share a moment.

This Front Street shop in Old Town Sacramento is a toy lovers’ (of any age) paradise. Each year 12 toys are picked to showcase the best in creativity, activity, and education. I visited the shop where Connie explained each toy and demonstrated them to me. Here are photos of each of the toys. They can be found to either side of the Christmas tree near the front door.

Like Connie said, they are pretty ugly, but remain popular for those that like that sort of thing.

KEVA uses good ole wood. These put-it together kits can make things small to large.

Check out this tall tower built out of KEVA.

Just like Hot potato only it flashes on and off and plays music... When the music stops.... Well you know what happens.

Moshi Monsters bump into walls alone or in play situations and keep on going.

For the aviators on your Christmas list. I had these growing up. Some things never go out of favour.

Miniature ‘LEGO’ like blocks to build all kinds of things.

Another old standby.

Check out this patron showing us how to do it

Human beings act as switches to turn these wands on. Link up multiple for a human glow chain.

Connie shows off the stick in operation.

Using just newspaper, this rocket can make a big bang. (Scared some patrons when we tried it out)

Everyone picks a number, rolls the dice until all dice show that number

Imagine hundreds of dot per picture. That’s extreme.

Pump up the chamber and let the airzooka throw a ball of air up to 20 feet at high velocity.

Proceeds from ticket sales, raffle tickets, and a silent auction benefitted the Albie aware Breast Cancer Foundation.

The 4th annual Albie Ribbin’ BBQ cook-off was held at the Hilltop Tavern in East Sacramento. Music was provided by the Sacramento party band the Q-Balls, and a plate of ribs, cole slaw, beans, and French toast was cooked up by Pork it Up Gourmet BBQ.

The Art Service Group(ASG) of the Crocker Art Museum hosts monthly appraisal days for the public to have art pieces evaluated. This month's focus was on painting and sculpture. The service is provided for $10.00 per piece and the monies are donated to the Crocker Art Museum.

What follows are photographs showing the appraisers examining the pieces for the item's artist, authenticity, and value.

Karen Alkon and Sylvia Fitzgerald refer to auction books and online data sources in their search for an item's specifics.

Sylvia Fitzgerald consults with Karen about an item's dimensions.

Often a painting will come with reference data on the back and, as in this case, information sandwiched between the painting and the back cover.

This painting of a 5 masted steam ship included a full schematic of the ship in between the painting and the backgound.

An authentic painting, this would go for a few thousand dollars at auction.

Sylvia looks up the reference information on this bear.

Item defects such as the missing ear and to a lesser extent repairs made to the foot of the bear will reduce the item's value.

This bronze, in perfect condition, was determined to be exceptionally unique and worth several thousand dollars.

Sylvia examines this cider stein for specifics regarding the figure painted on the front.

The stein was manufactured by the Lenox Company and includes a unique artist signed painting on the front. It was thought that this was part of a set that included matching cider mugs.

This vase shown above was thought to be a mediocre knock off and of little value.

However, this husband and wife were pleasantly surprised by the value of this painting of a stallion. Only under magnification could one make out the artist's signature.

Tom Sullivan, local and national radio host takes the helm as Master of Ceremonies. Tom joined the FOX business Network (FBN) as anchor in October 2007, and hosts a long running midday talk show on KFBK as well as the Tom Sullivan Show on Saturdays carried by the FOX Business Network. His daily three hour radio show has consistently dominated the ratings for over 20 years.

Peter Sheehan is considered a global thought leader. His opinions on business trends and the changing needs of the customer have made him a regular presenter on FOX Business Network, with appearances on ABC and the BBC. Peter has spent a decade enlightening business in innovative opportunity oriented decision making.

His fifth book, 'Flip", focusses on mindset flexibility in decision process and leadership development. It encourages an evolutionary approach to business strategy uncovering opportunity even in these tough economic times.

Peter's view of corpprate infrastructure, technology trends, and inflection points leads him to assert that "what u see now is what will become reality". How reality develops depends on the "lenses", and assumptions used in seeing corporate development. Control and especially collaboration are pivotal in the context of these lenses.

Arianna Huffington discusses the search for the positive in our American society and the American Dream. According to Huffington the American spirit is there but waning and with countries like France currently having more upward mobility America can't deliver the dream without recapturing the American spirit. The US is currently in a job crisis.Huffington says we cannot hire the people we have trained. Mentorship and a sensitivity to developing wisdom are needed in this hyper connected world. We must unplug and rejuvenate. It is hard to be wise if you're exhausted. From wisdom and fresh minds come the most creative and innovative ideas and spirits.

Vicente Fox believes that the American dream is in fact the Dream of the Americas. He sees the Mexican people aspiring to the upward mobility and increased wealth that the American Dream promises. However he also sees that the US is characterized by lack of action, of decisions. The American way, from an international point of view, is to discuss discuss discuss.

According to Fox, the US is behind countries like South Korea in developing human capital. 83 percent of South Koreans graduate college, compared to the US with 60 percent and Latin American with just 22 percent. The US must reinvest in this key resource of human capital if the American dream is to be kept alive.

Tom Sullivan asked Vicente Fox how he made such large changes in Coca Cola and also in Mexico.Vicente's response was that both the country and Coca Cola were just ready. He was in the right place at the right time. When asked about the Fast and Furious program, his response was a very clear "no transparency, no accountability. In democracy this should not happen."

Howie Long discussed his life as a senior in high school then as a pro football player, sports analyst and actor. He addressed his stormy relationship with Al Davis after his retirement from the game, and the issue of concussions in the sport of football. Long joked that his two sons are taking different paths to success, one as a pro football player and the other as a laywer with aspirations of managing the Long family business.

Richard (Dick) Cheney is concerned that the national security, foreign policy, and defense strategy are not being discussed in the current presidential campaign. Of primary importance is the mideast unrest that is being seen today. Cheney's contention is that the US appears weaker now in the middle east due to a perceived reduction in commitment to the region and regional issues in addition to appearing no longer able to defend ourselves. The lack of a meeting between the President and Israel's Netanyahu on Netanyahu's last US visit underscores this lack of commitment which is leading to a waning lack of trust of the US in the region.

When asked by Tom Suliivan about the death of Osama Bin Laden, Cheney said that it is primarily a testament to the soldiers and the intelligence agencies and not necessarily the result of any president's foreign policy.

The reason we went into Afghanistan? He simply answered 911. However we have not learned the lessons of the Russians who dropped the ball by leaving a vacuum when the mujahideen drove them out.

That is why it is so critical that non-profits provide that safety net of care for our foster care youth, and especially our emancipated youth as they transition into adulthood. I applaud the Sacramento Asian Pacific Chamber of Commerce Foundation and its leadership for tackling this critical need and giving these kids the skills necessary for them to compete. This program will go a long way in laying a strong foundation for these young adults future successes."

The Fire Operations 101 burn trailer houses a simulated vertical ventilation and direct attack of a fire in a 400 degree plus room with live flame. The flame is fueled by propane. The direct attack uses hoses to put water directly on the flames. Vertical ventilation invloves cutting through a roof or ceiling to alleviate pressure buildup within the structure. It gives heat, smoke, and gasses a chance to escape the structure increasing survival times and providing additional minutes for evacuation and rescue.

Fire Ops 101 goal is to educate policy makers about what firefighters face on the job by letting them get 'up close and personal' with the heat, sweat, and smoke. With this first hand experience lawmakers can make more informed decisions about issues related to fire protection and firefighter training and apprenticeship.

California legislators are prepped and then taken through the Fire Ops 101.

Proper preparation and equipment are essential for the safety of firefighters (and legislators)

Assemblymember Holly Mitchell dons the firefighters suit.

A ladder climb to the roof where the firefighters wil be ready for the vertical ventilation demonstration.

Firefighters await on the roof of Fire Ops 101 for the Assemblymember

Tools are used to open up a hole for the vertical ventilation. Here a simple pick is shown. Portable power tools including a chain saw are also employed to make the ventilation as effective as possible. Assemblymember Mitchell demonstrates.

A short climb down and the vertical ventilation demonstration is complete.

Senate President Pro Tem Darrell Steinberg is the next legislator to 'feel the heat' He will be prepped to go through the Fire Ops 101 flame direct attack at a temperature of approximately 400 degrees..

Getting ready with the live hose

In he goes.

Flames from the floor combined with smoke and the room frame causes dangerous sheets of fire to move throughtout the room. Swirling smoke can also be seen below the roof/ceiling in these photographs.

Finished with the direct flame attack the legislators exit Fire Ops 101 into the fresh air.Several legislators were able to take advantage of Fire Ops 101 demonstration, and all of them seemed relieved to be finshed with the experience.
