It amazes me that some people seem to think that our Mayor is only doing one thing at a time. It also amazes me that some of them are the same people who would oppose a strong Mayor initiative that would allow the Mayor to actually accomplish some of the things that need to be done.
To me, Second Saturday is NOT all about art. It hasn't been for a couple of years now. Yes, once you are in a gallery or alternative space, things are generally pretty good, although the sheer number of people now seems to have caused most galleries to reduce or eliminate the refreshments served (I never decided which galleries to attend based on getting free food or drink, but there were times I could find enough sustenance to get through a few hours of walking all over midtown). The issues that keep me away are difficulty navigating the streets and finding parking when I first drive into midtown, and the noisy, rowdy shoulder to shoulder crowds that I then have to wade through to get from one venue to another. I've lived in bigger cities before, which have had similar events, and was able to feel much more relaxed. A friend/collaborator and I cancelled two of the shows we planned for this season because of our discontent with the event. All this is not to say it should be cancelled. It does seem to help some of the businesses and there are many people who have an enjoyable experience at Second Saturday. It's just that, unfortunately, I am no longer one of them.
Conversation about: One Night Only... My Sister's House 10th Anniversary Gala
One of the best productions I've seen in a long time. Everyone did a great job. Good review and great photos here, too.
