“We can, whenever and wherever we choose, successfully teach all children whose schooling is of interest to us. Whether or not we do this, depends upon how we feel about the fact that we haven’t done it so far.” (Dr. Ron Edmonds, 1979) Sacramento County Office of Education Leadership Institute will host Sacramento-area author and educator Rex Fortune on Thursday, Sept. 27, 2012, 4-6 p.m., at the David P. Meaney Center in Mather, Calif. Fortune will present an in-depth workshop and discuss his book, “Bridging the Achievement Gap: What Successful Educators and Parents Do,” published earlier this year. Attendees will receive a copy of the book as part of the price of admission. The general
The Interfaith Council of Greater Sacramento hosted a wide variety of musical and spoken word performances in celebration of faith this past Thursday evening at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in downtown Sacramento. The second annual, “Interfaith Night of Music and the Spoken Word, A Cultural Event,” drew supporters from throughout the Sacramento area who were eager to experience the spiritual messages from a variety of religious traditions. “When I saw the list of participants, I wanted to be here,” stated Dorothy Carpenter when asked why she attended the event. Those who arrived early could sense the anticipation as several of the choirs and musical groups took turns setting u
The Interfaith Council of Greater Sacramento will hold its second annual “Interfaith Night of Music and the Spoken Word,” this Thursday evening, Aug. 23, beginning at 7:30 p.m. at the Cathedral of the Blessed Sacrament in downtown Sacramento. The event will showcase a wide variety of musical and spoken word performances in celebration of faith and inspiration from the diverse array of spiritual traditions that are present in the Sacramento area. The idea to hold the event was first generated at a meeting of Interfaith Council member representatives when discussing the question, “What could we do for the community?” One of the proposals that met with an enthusiastic response came from In
This past Monday evening, an enthusiastic gathering of local religious leaders and community activists convened at the Sacramento Food Bank in Oak Park to hear from top law enforcement officials in an effort to foster better relations and cooperation with the community through faith based organizations. The summit was led by Bishop Ron Allen, Pastor of the Greater Solomon Community Church who also serves as the executive director of the International Faith Based Coalition (I.F.B.C.). Allen founded the I.F.B.C. in 2008 and serves as its president and chief executive officer. The I.F.B.C.’s mission and purpose is described on their website as, “Uniting religions to educate youth about the
The Grown Folks Red Carpet Entertainment Event was held at the historic Guild Theater in Oak Park this past Saturday evening. Terry Moore of T-Mo Entertainment brought Courtney Dempsey of CW 31’s “Good Day Sacramento” to serve as the special guest host and emcee. “We were determined to go all out and really make our last red carpet event of the year an evening to remember,” stated Moore before the show began. “We’ve put together a lineup of entertainment that will feature a few of Sacramento’s favorite performers as well as bringing some newly discovered talent to the stage for their first appearance at the Guild.” The pre-show entertainment began with a fashion show featuring models rec
Henry, I am very pleased to see that you are making use of such a wonderful community resource as the Sacramento Press as a means of communicating your concerns and having your voice heard. I strongly urge you to make more use of this forum and urge others who are active in the community to do the same. The Sacramento Press is woefully underutilized in neighborhoods where too few know that it exists.
Allison, I hope you had a great vacation. I'm glad to see you're back. From global warming, to Honey Boo Boo, to video games, you don't miss much. Your column today make me laugh and feel sad at the same time. As far as the global warming issue goes, the earth will survive long after the human race goes the way of the dodo bird. I only hope that the trend toward spending countless hours on feel good television and video games don't prevent the 99% from our responsibilities of leaving our culture and our planet better off than it was when we arrived.
On the soy sauce flavored ice cream, my motto is to try anything twice, because you just might not "get it" the first time. What is interesting about the HPV virus and the Barbie/G.I. Joe dolls and their exaggerated gender roles, is that they expose different aspects of this country's historical views on sexuality. The myths and the ethos that have been passed on through the decades and centuries appear to more outdated and destructive over time. Burying our collective heads in the sand will not make HPV virus go away any more than ignoring the underlying messages sent through popular media of what an idea man (six pack abs) and woman (hourglass figure) are supposed to look like, rather than highlighting the importance of who they are (the content of their character) as the measure of their worth. Allison, have a great vacation. I know you have earned it.
Hey Allison, great article as usual. I believe the BSA will have to re-think their policy on what is the new politically (and morally) correct position on homosexuality in the U.S. After President Obama signaled a change in what tolerance means in this country a few months ago with his stance on same sex marriage, the winds of change are blowing hard. Anyone who earned an Eagle Scout designation and then elected to send it back is no doubt sending a powerful message. By the way, I don't think I need to pay a $1.82 per minute to blow off some steam at a stranger. Just walk through Ceasar Chevez park or walk down K Street and wait a little while. It won't take long before you see somebody "Schimpf-los” a stranger free of charge!
