This is the type of self-deluded vision that I see far too often from residents of Sacramento, particularly those that live in the grid. If you really want to stick your head in the sand and believe this is a great city, than all I can do is say that I feel sorry for you. The only thing missing in this steaming pile are the phrases "World Class City" and "Capital of the World's 8th Largest Economy".

Perhaps you think it would have been fun to see grafitti on the building or for the building owners to have to pay for the clean-up and possible window replacements.
Yelp reviews, seriously? Sacramento Yelpers are a bunch of whiny hipsters who prefer food trucks and dive bars that serve PBR. These are the same people who think that they should get treated like kings while receiving a discount on their bill or they will write a bad review. Plus, the initial bad reviews on Yelp about BarWest have almost nothing to do with the food and drink but are all about the fact that the reviewer didn't like the clothing of the other patrons.

I'd think that Midtown residents should be more concerned about the criminals who are robbing people at gun and knifepoint than about some drunk bro's leaving the bar and talking loudly at 2:00 am. However, if I suggest that the Police could easily do something about this I'll probably be accused of promoting profiling. Apparently it's only OK to profile bro's now.

It's funny how no one claims that the patrons of Blue Cue, Red Rabbit, or Harlow's are causing any problems. Cater to the hipsters and midtown residents will give you a pass, but businesses that cater to those of us who work out get slammed. I see just as many people stagger out of the other establishments along that block of J Street on a regular basis, behave loudly, and even piss against alley walls, but the neighbors only choose to focus on BarWest. It's basically modern-day discrimination, the patrons don't look like the nearbye residents, so the residents blame them for the problems.

Of course maybe that's because you've never mentioned any of those groups before in your articles. However, it makes sense to me that you would believe that everything is the fault of these groups. I mean, it certainly fits with your denial of any personal responsibility and your belief that everything that has happened in your life is not only the fault of someone else, but actually an entire conspiracy against you.

I believe these articles are the previous ones to which Sonny referred and after reading them again I stand by my comments.

Sonny (or Peer Blank) created his situation through his own actions and refusal to take responsibility and his newest article is more of the same. He still seems to take no responsibility whatsoever for his action and apparently blames all of his problems, and those of other homeless people, on everyone else in the world that doesn't just give him whatever he wants.

Sonny - I'm not offended by anything you say about me because you know nothing about me.

However, I would like to point out that in one of your previous comments you stated,

"maybe you could look at my last article that Sac Press encouraged me to do that was framed around what you might see as 'productive' approach, where i exposed my experience living homeless, in an extremely intimate fashion, one that most people would dare not chance. Its titled something like 'My experiences being homeless' or something along those lines."

Unfortunately, I can no longer find this article on the site and apparently neither can Allison because my previous comment mentioning this article was flagged and removed.

So, to make my point again I will just ask what exactly have you brought to this discussion other than complaints about people being mean to you and the members of the homeless population.

You have not recommended any solutions for the issue.

As I stated in my comment that was removed, I support groups like Loaves and Fishes, WEAVE, and various rescue missions. I do this rather than handing money to people on the street because I know these funds will be used for programs that actually provide benefits whereas if I gave money to every panhandler that approaches me in Sacramento I could not be sure that those funds would not be used to continue whatever addiction has caused them to become homeless.

If that is offensive to you, I apologize but it is my way of helping with this problem. However, I still think that Sacramento PD should enforce vagrancy laws and I remain opposed to allowing permanent campsites along the river.

Sad news, but why is anyone surprised? Events in Sacramento like NYE, Second Saturday, or even just weekends in midtown are overrun with gangbangers because they know there is insufficient police presence. Face it, Downtown/Midtown Sacramento are no longer safe. And as more people realize this it will get worse and worse because the people that can afford to will move to Roseville and Folsom. The midtown resurgence is dead.

It's not so much that as the fact that the Sac PD does not have an effective and visible presence in the Midtown area. The high concentration of bars and nightlife in the are requires a high concentration of Police patrols. This means that the early-on in the evening the PD should be stopping cars that look out of place, and patrols should be happening on foot or by bicycle. Once the bars start to let out this should be supplemented with DUI patrols. A large Police presence will cut down on all crime in the area.

I fully support this idea. The city should provide recreation facilities for all. It's not fair to just provide them for real sports. No, they should provide them for sports that people make up as well. If this goes through, I plan to ask the city for a combo Rollerball and Baseketball facility in the future as well. I mean, c'mon, it's not like the City has a shortage of tax dollars or needs to spend them on real, pressing, needs that will benefit the community. Clearly, those needs are not as pressing as a place to play Bicycle Polo!

Farmer's Markets aren't patronized by low-income communities, they are patronized by upper and upper-middle-class residents who choose to eat fresh, organic, healthy foods. Any sort of permanent farmer's market should be located near Midtown so that those residents and people in the Fab 40's will patronize the market which they will not do if they have to drive to it and park up near Richards Blvd. If the concern is really to benefit the lower-class neighborhoods that were mentioned, a Wal-Mart would be more useful.

Every year the majority of lawmakers in the legislature purposely overestimate the amount of tax revenue that will be received rather than making hard choices about which programs should be cut. The excuse for this year's overly generous estimate was more specific, i.e. Facebook stock profits, but its the same thing they have always done. If they feel like they need to put on a show of fiscal responsibility, the lawmakers agree to automatic cuts that will kick in if revenues do not meet expectations, but when push comes to shove, those same lawmakers will call those cuts barbaric and look for other ways to put off making any cuts at all. California lawmakers keep kicking the can down the road in the hopes that a miracle will occur and the economic engine will restart and bail out this state.

Sacramento's biggest problem is the state worker mentality. Denver's a government town as well, but you don't hear nearly as many self-entitled statements from people in that city. I've lost track of how many times I've heard state and local government employees talking about how much they gave up to work in government and how much more they could make if they went to the private sector. Most of them would be fired in a month if they weren't protected by SEIU.

On another note, I completely agree with you about the state of radio here in Sacramento. I wasn't living here when KWOD was on the air, but from your description it sounds like it was far better than the cesspool of corporate radio that currently fills the airwaves. If you ever find yourself running a local station again, I would likely be a regular listener.

Apparently neither Billy Burg nor Triple-C can read so well. I did not criticize zombie festivals or food trucks, I merely observed that if these are your cultural highlights than this town does not have much to offer. The fact that Chicago also offers similar activities is great, but they certainly aren't the biggest things going in that city.

As for Triple C's comments about Paris, I am confused because Paris was not even mentioned in the list I referenced. CCC stated that it would be hard to find a community of similar size that is as nice as Sacramento but then, CCC gives away his/her bias by stating, "when you have friends, familiarity and a certain comfort level, the "where" is not always as important as the "what"".

While that's a great theory and people tend to like being around friends and family, the link I provided shows that when considering objective criteria, there are at least 50 other communities throughout the US considered to be better places to live, many of which are of similar size to Sacramento.

If more downtown restaurants offered free valet parking I might frequent them more often. However, I am not willing to pay the exorbitant fees charged by the parking garages just to go somewhere for lunch. And while a ban on panhandling would be the best solution, its unlikely to happen but it would be nice if the police actually enforced the solicitation and vagrancy laws that are already on the books.

Together, both of these would make the downtown area much more inviting.

Everyone knew this event was scheduled, so why didn't the Police set up checkpoints at the entryway and at various points along the route. If the PD had cracked down immediately on issues such as inappropriate use of life vests, underage drinking, public nudity, and public intoxication, the event would have been much more under control. Additionally, the organizers should be billed for the added police presence required to maintain order. Finally, the disclaimer by the organizers is a joke and would not hold up in any court of law if someone did get injured or worse.

Sacramento could be a great little city, but its not currently and a continued focus on building a basketball arena is not going to make it into one.

Sacramento should consider taking a lesson from the late James Q. Wilson and his "broken windows" theory of urban disorder. If Mayor KJ and the City Council would start focusing on the small things, like fixing broken sidewalks, filling potholes, enforcing vagrancy laws, prohibiting camping or loitering in public places, this city would be much better. The city could go a long ways towards revitalizing K Street if it just cleared all of the homeless bums out of the area and out of Cesar Chavez park. I went by the park on Sunday and it looked like a homeless convention.

Second Saturday would be better if there was a visible police presence and the gangbangers learned that their behavior is not tolerated.

Also, rather than building an arena, funds could be used to build an outdoor concert venue on the river. Whether or not the Kings stay or go, this would provide a place for concerts that currently won't go to PBP because of the terrible acoustics.

Finally, how about some free parking or at least validated parking by businesses on the weekends in Midtown? Turn off the meters and more people would make the decision to visit businesses in the area.

This could be a great little town, but it's going to take some work.

There's that, and the fact that nearly any time restrictions are proposed on abortion providers, the immediate fall back position of the pro-choice side is to point out that abortion is a constitutionally protected procedure and restricting access is the same as restricting women's right.

In this case, McCarty, who is definitely pro-choice, is attempting to do the same thing to another constitutionally protected activity, the right to keep and bear arms, and clearly many of these midtown residents, many of whom we can safely assume are also pro-choice, are in support of him.

The irony is palpable.

I had no idea that McDonald's and WalMart had the ability to control people's minds. You can choose not to go there you know.

Also, if the surrounding neighborhoods already have such a high level of preventable illness, maybe the city should do something about it like mandatory exercise and weigh-in's. I'll bet a lot of the people in that area have large flat-screen TVs and video games. We should confiscate those immediately, especially from the fat people. As you said, their responsibility to the community, in this case to stay healthy and fit, should trump their own narrow personal interest in watching TV or playing video games. I'm sure you'll agree.

And yes, you are correct, you likely could not add a commercial business to your home. That is why we have zoning restrictions. However, since this lot clearly has commercial zoning, perhaps these neighbors should have had the foresight to petition the city for a zoning change to this empty lot before someone decided to build a commercial establishment at the site. However, they failed to do so and thus building a McDonald's becomes perfectly legal and acceptable.

“They showed up and asked people which design they wanted,” Hauser said. “They weren’t asking if we wanted a McDonald’s – they were asking what did we want the one they were going to build to look like. We were stunned, and that’s when we all said, ‘Hold on! What’s happening here?’ ”

Dr. Hauser may have medical education, but she clearly has NO understanding of property rights. If she wants to determine what happens on every vacant lot in the neighborhood, then she and the other NIMBY's should pool their resources and buy those lots.

While I'm fairly sure that Carmichael Dave was fired so that he won't have an on-air platform to criticize the Kings when they proceed with the inevitable move to another city after next season, I really think this guy needs to get over himself. If his numbers are that good, someone else will pick him up, but unless he turns into the next Rush Limbaugh, no one at CBS Radio is going to regret this decision. Unfortunately, what Dave needs to learn is that everyone has an opinion and without a radio station to broadcast it, he really is just another blowhard at the corner bar.

Terrible news about Nicole's cancer. Unfortunately, while this article blames the economic downturn, it fails to mention the fact that having the Occupy protestors camping out in Cesar Chavez park for a good portion of the past year has likely also impacted business. I certainly know that I have avoided patronizing any businesses in the immediate area of the park because I don't want to be hassled by a bunch of unemployed socialists who blame the American system for their own failures.

Funny how a group that claimed to be fighting the banks and corporate America is really just hurting mom and pop businesses like Cafe Soleil.

It's not Wells Fargo or Bank of America that are forcing businesses to close, but rather these self-involved occu-tards who believe that the government should provide for their every need.
