Former King Matt Barnes to host charity golf tournament

Break out your plaid and visors for a day on the golf course with Sacramento native and current NBA player Matt Barnes. Barnes and other high-profile sports figures are in town for the second annual Athletes vs Cancer Foundation’s Celebrity Golf Invitational. The former Sacramento King began the foundation, according to his website, in 2009 after Barnes lost his mother Ann to cancer in 2007. Athletes vs Cancer spreads awareness and provides screening opportunities. “Athletes have a positive influence,” Barnes said. When athletes voice their support, it brings more light to serious situations he said. The Foundation hopes to raise $100,000 at this year's event. All proceeds from the tour

Sac Gold win division, head to Final Four

Qualify for the Northwest Division playoffs? Check. Place No. 1 and win home-field advantage? Check. Win the division championship? Check. With a 3-2 win Sunday over the San Diego Boca FC, the Sacramento Gold punched its ticket to Madison, Ala., for the National Premiere Soccer League Final Four. “It feels great to be (Northwest Division) champions,” said leading scorer Manolo Pina. Pina scored two of the three Sacramento goals. Pina’s goals came in the 29th and 33rd minutes, both times beating a hard-charging San Diego goalkeeper on a breakaway. San Diego’s Amir Vafaee scored in the 34th. The crowd was displeased with his exuberant celebration and booed loudly. The second Boca goal ca

Sacramento Gold advance to NPSL Northwest Division Championship

With an Ambassador win over the Gold June 27, the Bay Area team secured the fourth seed in playoffs, guaranteeing yet another matchup between the two squads in the first round of playoffs July 11. But the past has been forgotten. The Sacramento Gold proved why they currently hold first place in their inaugural season in the National Premiere Soccer League, beating the Ambassadors 6-3 to advance to the Northwest Division

Touche. The Cleveland Browns relocated to Baltimore and one year later got a team back in Cleveland with new ownership so it's possible. It sounds like if the Kings stay this year, then we will be revisiting this entire pain-staking situation again next spring.

It was Mayor Cabaldon that said the region is on board. Obviously there are individuals opposed but Cabaldon is stating West Sac (the general majority) are on board with wanting the Kings to stay.

Conversation about: Athletes > Cancer

I was looking forward to seeing Pollard's outfit all week and after three separate trips around the course (walking around for 30 minutes each time!), I left Woodcreek only wondering. I had an idea of the hilarity, but wow. Pollard's attire wildly exceeded my expectations. Wildly. Great article and pictures!

Conversation about: Residents to discuss city budget at "Community Conversations"

To answer Dale, so far the conversations only relate to city-wide issues, but in speaking with Barr and Blank there is always the possibility to expand to county-wide issues. Jim, the July 13 conversation will discuss the city budget but more specifically the question will be posed, "what are we willing to do without and what residents are willing to do about the rest?" As for what happens with the results, they are not circulated or forwarded to any city officials. The goal is only to create the dialogue and receive varying opinions from different communities and community members.
