Basketball creates very few well paying jobs (the Team) and a bunch of hot dog vendor jobs.

Surely we can do better than that?

His strategy is flawed.

1. 25 people x $1M = not even close. Should give up at this point but no.
2. Find the biggest rich a-hole that likes basketball Sorry Mark Cuban already taken.
3. Still willing to waste taxpayer money despite huge opposition.
4. Using the fans to enable #4

What does the Mayor do all day? Austin is getting all the new money. He's a shambles.

@cogmeyer I thought he was the developer too.
The average cost of building a 2100 sq ft house by itself is around $150-180K which would generally sell for $300-350K depending on the neighborhood.
Still a 50% profit.
Economies of scale building 500 of the same would bring that cost down way below $100K per house but still leave the purchase price the same. $75M pure profit.

@ben - I think a hybrid analog / digital marketplace for goods and services is where we are headed. We're already seeing the big guys try to copy the plucky locals - think Starbucks and those mini Walmart grocery stores. There's a demand for high quality local product in Sacramento just not the marketing and delivery infrastructure to back it up.

The model put forward by http://brooklynfare.com is a good start - but we need to take it a lot further by letting individuals sell their wares - what if Uncle Bob could sell his BBQ sauce or Aunt May sell her State Fair dill pickles both online for delivery and in stores.

I'm using food here as an example because we're the Fork to Farm capital of the world or something.

I think local restaurants are the only truly local thing that works. Why get a burger at Applebees when you can spend the same amount at a "Dad's Kitchen" type place.

The mobile consumer is becoming ever more prevalent, as many big box chains have come to realize, people will try out clothes or electronics in the store but search for better deals on Amazon. It's called "Showrooming".

Amazon is actually a marketplace for many small businesses but most people don't realize. Why don't we let the big chains help us decide what to buy and use services like Amazon to make our purchases?

As for the Kay - it blows.

Also, @Sacresident515 I get the RSS feed so I see everything that gets posted.

For creativity and modernity I suggest you take a look at the upcoming Launch festival - launchsacramento.com - they seem to have attracted some major talent.

The money junkies like Cheap Channel and record labels have ruined the music industry by trying to extract the most value out of it. People have voted with their money - spending less on music - hence all you get is crap that fills time in between adverts. Downward spiral.

The only opportunity for bands to make money now are live shows and tour merchandise. Why would they come to Sacramento and play the fair for relatively no money?

When I think "Fair" I think of a platform for deep fried everything, crappy has-beens, dangerous rides, and farm animals.

Why does it have to be more?

I've been to the OC Fair and it's the same stuff in a different location. I went to see Weezer last time who were great - but you buy concert tickets and get free fair admission. Not the other way round.

I get by very well with Spotify Premium for $9.99 per month. I have an iPhone and can stream my own musical playlists, my friends' playlists plus a virtually unlimited number of internet radio stations based upon my musical tastes or mood. I can also use the same exact service on my home entertainment system and my car.

I do however supplement this with local radio stations for the "characters" - 98 rock has some great talent and NPR pretty much rounds out everything I need.

For me I already have internet radio in my car - and so do millions of others if they have Bluetooth.

P.S. Clear channel sucks.
