    <content type="text">Colleen, I appreciate your response to my comment. What provoked me in your original post is, I feel, to be an ill-considered letter to the Sacramento Press readership in which you seem to denigrate others, whilst elevating yourself.

I could be wrong; after all, on this thread, it's all "Colleen Belcher hagiography."

Josh and I are apparently just outliers whose heterodox views are suspect--and investigated illicitly.</content>

    <content type="text">The Sacramento Press is an example of the future of local news journalism and your contributions to its success should give you a great amount of satisfaction.

Your comment "another breaking development wipes out the previous story from everyone’s ADD attention span" brought up an important point. People have a very limited amount of time for reading news and are bombarded with with too much information. The sequential nature of story presentation done by newspapers does make it difficult for the average person to do follow-up and one is typically interested in just a small percentage of the presented material. I am not entirely certain of the solution. But I suspect it will involve categorization, linking to prior reports, personal-filtering, topic-specific alerts, trusted-expert summaries and links to sources. The online newspaper that gets this formula right will dominate in the decades ahead after the dead-tree publications finally go away.</content>

I do, however, have the words to say I'm sorry for all those Tuesday nights... I often forget that not everyone sits at the edge of their seats with me over council votes!

You are a beautiful person, inside and out, and The Sacramento Press has been lucky to have you for as long as they did. Now, it's (not "its") time for you to take your own brand of wonderful to other mountaintops and share your gifts and talents with others. Lucy, lucky them to receive you.

    <content type="text">Dianne Heimer was my Writing for Publication instructor, but before class had barely begun, I had unexpectedly received my first print assignment--for SNR--an opportunity I snagged because I was already doing the interview for Capital Public Radio. It's amazing how, so many years later--and it's been a few few--so many of the mentors and opportunities remain consistent. I, too, have longed for escape, but there is something comforting about the Cheers-like atmosphere of this town. I, for one, am happy that we'll have you for a bit longer!</content>

    <content type="text">Update: Actually, the ghost stories are a thing of the past. Our community manager asked for them not to be posted anymore. So no need for a filter! (This was already done sometime ago, but I just found out. I'm still getting my bearings here). What I wrote before about filtering still applies: &#xD;
--&#xD;
We rely on community input, via comments and the thumbs up/thumbs down option, to decide which stories should be featured, so you can actually help us in the filtering process.</content>

    <content type="text">Depends on the situation, Brandon. The aggrieved or perceived aggrieved (particularly well funded tea party demonstrators) are more inclined to show up at demonstrations than the uninformed or those not affected by a given issue/action .
The big difference is when the reporter gives the impression that the tiny minority is equal to the majority, instead of so stating the reality. By failing to state the contrast, the reporter creates a bias in favor of the minority voice. In days before video media, I well remember reporters writing something like this after newspaper or magazine photos showed "A crowd of thousands gathered in front of the courthouse . . . . " In the story itself there would then be reference to "a few (or 10 or two hundred) standing along side . . . ."</content>

    <content type="text">You don't accept (was it Nixon's?) "silent majority" theory?

That said, most demonstrations are by their nature composed of people from one side of an issue. There may be counterprotests nearby, but look at the Westboro Baptist Church protesting at military funerals. If I only interview the people there, I have presented a very biased story.

I remember covering the beginnings of the tea party in 2008. At the time, it was people protesting taxes. Who actually likes taxes? But I still had to find the other side, which was absent from all the demonstrations. And given three years, it's pretty clear that that helped the story be unbiased, rather than creating a bias.</content>

    <content type="text">I attended the "Bias in Journalism" workshop held previously and it was excellent. Interesting how some media strive for that lack of bias.

It is often very funny--funny strange and funny haha. In crowd demonstrations or meetings the vast majority will be holding signs or speaking for one side of the controversial issue. Then the reporter proudly and glibly says "BUT not everyone feels that way." She/he, in order to avoid "bias" has dug, scoured and searched until, finally she/he can find ONE dissenter to speak for the other side.

The result is that the reporter creates bias for the reader or viewer in attempting to avoid bias, leaving the impression that that the one single voice was equal to the 100 others who were there. I've seen and read this over and over.</content>

    <content type="text">Hi Brian,

That is something we get asked often. We are fine-tuning our guidelines every day to guide our writers in best practices for our site. The short answer is that we actually don't allow direct advertisements or spam and anything that comes across like this will be pulled. So, someone who owns a business cannot write up an advertisement selling their services with pricing, etc.

However, we do invite these contributors to work with us to find other angles they can write about while staying within our guidelines. We encourage copy-editing and, most importantly, ask for transparency. To achieve this, we require that everyone disclose any affiliations they have with their articles so their motives are clear to readers.

I hope that answers your questions but if not I would be happy to elaborate. I can reached by phone at (916) 596-1963 or e-mail at casey@sacramentopress.com.</content>
