Motor vehicle owners always want more Free Parking, but there is no such thing. Someone has to pay for the space and maintain it. Fact is there are 2 parking garages within walking distance with hundreds of spaces available for monthly rent. So the real issue here is that motor vehicle owners just don't want to pay for parking. This should be a key consideration when choosing where to live, not after you have already moved in.

Wow, I am so grateful for my son and for this thoughtful bit of wisdom. $150 grand IS a LOT of money for most people. I never cease to be amazed at how casual government officials are about spending such sums. I agree with Cassidy, let's spend that $150 grand on better infrastructure for bikes.

From SFGate.com posted at 7:37AM:
SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Police have arrested a suspect in connection with a New Year's Eve shooting at a bar in the Old Sacramento area that killed two people.
Authorities say the 22-year-old was among three people wounded Monday evening. His injuries and those to a security guard and a woman are not life threatening.
Police say it started as an argument inside the bar and escalated. When an employee tried to break it up, he was shot, as were the woman and another man.
That man and the employee died at the scene.
Authorities say the armed guard heard the gunshots and got into a gunfight with the suspect and both were wounded.
Afterward, police canceled the midnight fireworks show that was expected to draw as many as 40,000 people.

Motor vehicle speed is clearly an issue that needs to be addressed, as any frequent cyclist and most motor vehicle users will readily attest. Nice people turn into Speeding Bullies when they are using motor vehicles. Mean people blame the victims for the destruction they cause. Motor vehicles are way overpowered and should be heavily taxed according to weight and horsepower at registration.

Members of the public that don't happen to be in a motor vehicle have an EQUAL RIGHT to the PUBLIC RIGHT OF WAY.
Yes, there are many commuters that would prefer bypassing Old Sacramento but there are also many who ride to Old Sacramento to dine, shop and enjoy the museums and special events such as the St Patrick's day Parade, Sacramento Music Festival, Gold Rush Days, Theatre of Lights, New Years Fireworks, Raley Field for baseball games, etc. Forcing all these through the intersection at 2nd & I would make visiting Old Sacramento dangerous and less desirable for all of these visitors. Tourists also like the safe and convenient access from Old Sacramento to the bike trails so it makes sense to improve access rather than hiding it behind the RR museum and forcing riders to navigate that busy intersection. That said I am 100% in favor of also providing a bypass for commuters, AFTER the current trail and access are improved to safely accomodate all users.

Great article, and I feel you made a great choice. I live 10 miles from my work and have been car-free for a bit over 2 years now. I use a BionX powered cargo bike and an old Worksman tricycle for hauling stuff and a 3 speed classic style roadster for the neighborhood. In a few days the odo on my longtail bike will go over 10,000 miles. I could rent a car if I really needed to and get a new model that the agency will have to keep running, not me. However, cars actually outnumber drivers so there are plenty available anyway. My sentiment about cars has evolved from indifference to intolerance. Cars are noisy, dangerous and pollute more than anything. They give otherwise nice people Road Rage and empower the military industrial complex by extracting a major portion of peoples income. We have a health care crisis due to car crash injuries and epidemic obesity with 2 lane drive throughs at fast food outlets. This social addiction is clearly the single most harmful thing going on today. Like most things, used in moderation cars would be OK, but we have gone far beyond moderate use. Think you are not addicted to your car? Try going without it for 30 days! You will experience withdrawal, physical, mental and emotional. Like other addictions, there is a way out that will leave you healthier, happier and richer. The first step is admitting there is a problem.
