It wasn't long ago that women weren't even accepted in such schools, said Lenore Janis, president of Professional Women in Construction..."

I know of buildings, some built in the 1970's, that carry insurance, so age of the building is not an issue.

There is no such thing as an occupied business, which is presumably safe, not being eligible for insurance; the issue is how much is the business willing to pay - or are they willing to assume all the risk.

I suspect that there could have been other reasons for some insurances carriers to reject the policy, such as not having fire sprinkers or a working fire alarm system - not the age of the building per se.

I will place a bet that the Kerths will try to get the taxpayers to pay for the reconstruction through the Redevelopment Agency.

Great point - but they are concrete - hmm

Kerth has applied for a permit to open an "outdoor" ice skating rink - which is still being reviewed - he DOES NOT have any permit to operate - I know the property was red tagged and deemed unsafe - a permit was issued to clean it up -

There has apparently been NO engineering review, signed off by a licensed structural engineer, that says the walls are safe without any additional support measures.

City building permits can be looked up online at:

This is the best article I have ever read on Sac Press!

Henry, fantastic work - It's nice to see someone else who has worked in LE stand up and start asking the tough questions that need to be asked - what we have been doing clearly is a failure. In fact, I would argue what we do in CJ does more harm than good.

I have spent years doing research, being active in youth opportunity programs, and contemplating the cause of crime and violence. Unfortunately, the solutions that I have contemplated will most likely never be implemented. I have learned two critical things while contemplating these societal ills - nothing is likely to change unless there is profit to be made - AND much, if not most, of the problem is deeply seeded in subcultures of gangs, violence and "diversity." - Or those that have no interest in being a party to the mainstream American culture. Culture is the third rail of politics - discussing it, on almost any level, is instantly polarizing. Until there can be open dialogue on the negative impacts of subcultures in our society, nothing will change. Political correctness prevents any reasonable dialogue or change.

Add these problems to the reality that HUNDREDS of BILLIONS are made YEARLY by the Law Enforcement & Prison Industrial Complex that politically controls the legislature on all levels of government; it is easy to determine that contemplating any meaningful change is an exercise in futility.

From my perspective, I wholeheartedly believe that nothing will change in our CJ system; so I focus on the micro level, changing one life at a time - the easiest way to do that is by providing a job, education, training, opportunity and support when and where one can - I do it through teaching and job training. The addage I adhere to is "the best way to stop a bullet, is with a job."

RichE - I will educate you - Questions of candidates may or may not be specifically related to their direct duties, often they are posed to illicit a candidates philosophy on a particular subject.

Such as asking Barbara Boxer what her position is on Roe V. Wade. She has NOTHING to do with Roe V. Wade, nor could she vote to overturn it - yet there are dozens of commercials on air that discuss her position on the subject, which she has NO AUTHORITY over. Yet for many, this is a deciding factor on whether or not to support her.

Q11: I would expect a "good sheriff" not to release illegal immigrants into our neighborhoods; but it is done daily throughout California. This county is all but a sanctuary county.

Q2: I want to vote for a sheriff who believe in alternatives to incarceration - there is a time and place to lock up criminals, there is also a time and place to use diversion AND prevention programs.

If you think my questions were "right wing” then you have no understanding of what the "right wing" is about - if anything they are classical liberal slanted questions.

The problem with our city, county, state and federal government is that 95% of candidates never have to answer the tough questions to get elected.

I dont know Jones, but your comment that he is divisive, along with your "African American" comment could imply that Jones would treat minority officers differently - expand on that.

As for your comment on experience - hows that been working out for our very experienced long term politicians? Experience is nice, but critical thinking skills, intelligence and innovation are much more important -

Oh for god’s sake - can't any 'Journalist" ask any decent questions of candidates?

You got this guy to give you an interview, and you ask questions that we've heard a hundred times before? We didn't learn ANYTHING about this candidate with this article except that he wants more officers - gee big surprise!

Geez what I would give to ask this guy a few questions; I doubt he would give me straight answers though.

Q1: Why do you think the United States incarcerates its citizens at a higher rate than any other nation on earth - even more so than Russia, Iran, Communist China and North Korea - the "axis of evil" countries?

Q2: Do you believe that the US's incarceration rate is a problem?

Q3: If you could wave a magic wand, what would you do to lower this incarceration rate - (This does not include magically making crime go away - it means from a law enforcement and corrections prospective - remember, the Sherriff runs the jail)

Q4: Will you issue concealed carry permits to law abiding citizens?

Q5: What are your thoughts on the Oath Keeper organization? Would you join, if not, why not? (and saying your not familiar with the organization is not acceptable - do the research - get back to me)

Q6: What do you think is the best way to reduce crime amongst youth?

Q7: How can law enforcement stop the explosive growth of the gang culture in America? LOL - smoke would come out of his ears over that one...

Q8: What does proactive law enforcement mean to you? Is SCSO proactive or reactive - explain -

Q9: What can you do to stop or slow down crime from illegal immigrants and violent gang members that come from South of the border.

Q10: Would you report each illegal alien taken into the jail facility to ICE?

Q11: Would you release an illegal immigrant onto the streets of Sacramento from your jail?

Q12: What is your position on Prop 19? If it passes, are you planning on cooperating with the federal government proscecuting marijuana crimes?

Q13: Did you support the proposed "gang tax?"

Q14: Do you think that the SO's salaries, pensions and benefits are sustianable? Do you believe these issues are related to agency cutbacks, layoffs and manpower shortages?

Q15: If you had the funds, would you support putting dash cams in every agency vehicle (Not just patrol) - and cameras in every part of the jail?

I could write a hundred good questions - not like the typical softball questions you read about in local papers and on the Sac Press - but then again he would most likely give some canned response - like all those that run for office.

Each of these questions would be followed up in detail, so he would have to expand on them, and wouldn't be allowed wiggle out of answering them - like all politicians running for office. Quick canned sound bites don’t answer anything.

Then I'd decide if he was worth voting for.

Yippiee - you are 100% correct they do do a "disservice" to the architectural history of Sacramento.

And Burg, actually they are only built like this to maximize the profit per square foot of land - the greenies just happen to support this style of development because it just happens to be used in urban cores - thus reducing urban sprawl - which of course is a good thing - but it has NOTHING to do with why the developer chose this particular design, they simply wanted more profit per square foot of land, and the East Coast row house design served their purpose.

...and they are still ugly, and have no yards, and cost twice, or more, than they should.

The principles driving this project are the same that drive almost every big project in Sacramento, either the Greek developer mob or David Taylor get what they want, when they want.

This is how the scam works - Quid Pro Quo, otherwise known as Pay to Play - the local elected monkeys need campaign money - they give hundreds of millions of dollars of NO BID contracts, almost always through SHRA, to their developer buddies - seemingly in direct exchange - these developers donate HEAVILY to the DNC and the local elected officials who are almost entirely Democrats - it's actually quite a sweet set up they have here in River City. But most citizens are oblivious, or Democrats - so no one really complains - they may be corrupted elected officials - but at least they are on their team, so the rationale goes. The same exact crap goes on in DC, with BOTH parties. This is why America is doomed, and no election will cure what ails this country.

And don’t even get me started on the Citizen United case....

THIS IS WHY OUR SOCIETY IS DOOMED, peoples biggest concerns are 'where are we going to shop' - instead of asking the question that really needs to be asked - why are firefighters such wimps?

The fire department sat by and watched the place burn FOR SEVERAL HOURS because they were afraid of some mythical 'explosive' in a back pack - what a joke. They GET PAID VERY VERY WELL to be in dangerous situations.

Thursday: Police announce suspect told them several times there was NO explosive device in the backpack, but they said they could not believe him.

Friday: Police announce that the suspect told them there was an explosive device in the backpack.

Gee guys, can't you get your story straight, or did you need to change your story to justify the fire departments inaction?

This reminds of the screw up during the Good Guys hostage crisis years back - stupid police tactics ended up getting several people killed - um, hey genius, you can't shoot straight through 1" thick plate glass window and expect to hit what you are aiming at. Oops, damn, sorry for your loss.

I guess I should have expanded on that comment, for those who are oblivious to reality. Doris Matsui takes in TONS of campaing money from developers like Angelo Tsakopoulos and his nephew Democratic bag man Phil Angelides.
Please provide ANY reliable research that supports your proposition that aborted human beings would live a life on welfare if the government did not force taxpayers to pay to terminate their lives.

There is also a big difference between making abortion illegal and forcing tax payers, who may be morally and/or religiously opposed, to pay for it.

We are aborting 1.37 million humans per year who may have otherwise grown grow up to work and pay taxes - personally I'd rather have those people alive and working instead of having to import tens of millions of illegal aliens into the country to work and pay taxes to support our aging population.

Dear Droids: Roe v. Wade cannot be overturned or threatened by anything on the November ballot it was a Supreme Court decision.

Just so we clarify the issue here: Progressives want taxpayer funded abortions, and they are using scare tactics, telling women they will lose some kind of right, if they don't vote for a progressive-big-government-unionist. The irony is, only when it comes to abortion do the liberals want government to stay out of their lives.

There are very good reasons for many well known writers and public figures to have used pen names.

I could easily mask my IP address and post under any name, given that fact, there is no way at all for Sac Press to verify who I am - Unless of course you want to start having posters fax in a copy of their drivers license.

The homosexual community has done a fantastic job of quelling any rational public dissent towards their agenda - and in California, those opposed to the gay lifestyle or political agenda, actually FEAR losing their jobs for voicing their constitutionally protected right to free speech & thought.

Dear Liberals - when you dream of things like sustainability - dream about a government that is sustainable - one without a ceaseless need to increase revenue and taxes to pay for all of the overpaid government employees, their pensions and the endless number of programs that seemingly exist just to employ government workers.

Our government’s unquenchable desire to increase tax revenue DIRECTLY leads to uncontrolled urban sprawl: the paving over of irreplaceable farm land, the development of stucco tract houses, strip malls, destroys species habitat, pollutes waterways and increases greenhouse emissions.

The single biggest threat to the environment? Urban Sprawl. I won’t even bother listing the effects – go do your own homework.

Neo-Liberals and so-called Progressives DIRECTLY un/wittingly HARM the environment by supporting more and more and more government programs - which require - more and more and more revenue - which requires more and more urban sprawl development - How’s that sustainability working out for ya? How do you think your political beliefs affect the environment?

Smaller government = less need for revenue = less pressure to endlessly develop = less harm to the environment.

SANCTIMONIOUS LEFTIES ARE IN NO POSITION TO SPEAK ABOUT THE ENVIRONMENT AND POINT FINGERS!

Until your political views support policies the decrease the size of government, you have no right to complain about anything.

Gee I wonder what the carbon footprint is of the three bozo's on the stage telling the rest of us we need to save the planet, 50-500 times that of a "common" person?

@Rich E. I am no "party honk" I detest both major political parties - I believe both neo-liberals/progressives and neo-conservaties/Republicans are a scourge to our country and our constitution.

Specific alternatives? Ok, halt urban sprawl and dramatically reduce the size of an unchecked government that controls virtually every single aspect of our lives.

Oh did you mean "alternatives to alternative energy" Sure, Nuclear power and hydrogen powered vehicles NOT Electric batteries, and micro-MagLev mass transit.

Think: http://www.skytran.net/phpsite/home/Home%20Intro.php

Bloom Boxes: http://www.bloomenergy.com

are those "alternative" enough for ya?

I am in the energy delivery business - Solar and wind are cute and all, and may work for some, but they are inefficient, very expensive (Which harms the poor) and unreliable.
