I really don't understand the obsession of some people with Sacramento becoming a "world class city". We should be happy with who we are. We are an agricultural cow town that's just big enough to be fun. It's affordable, close to all the best California has to offer, and we have the best weather in the world.

Don't be ridiculous. The beer would still be the same. Creating a fake shortage of something doesn't make it a better product. I have no opinion of the beer itself because I've never tried it and, unless they make enough of it that people don't have to wait hours for a precious little taste, I never will.

I loved the Boy Scouts as a kid and as an adult. Years ago when my oldest son was in the Scouts the Supreme Court handed down a ruling saying that the BSA could discriminate against atheist kids. I quit my post as assistant scout master and was told that this ruling didn't apply to adult leaders. Troop 13 in Sacramento, which served poor urban boys, folded shortly afterward because of no parental participation. What about my kids? I was told that they should just lie if they are atheists. (I don't know. It's up to them and they're just kids right now like all boy scouts anyway) A Scout is Trustworthy, Loyal, Helpful, Friendly, Courteous, Kind, Obedient, Cheerful, Thrifty, Brave, Clean, and Reverent. This is the Scout Law and I live by it. When I'm living outside and look at the stars I am more reverent than the Pope. It's just a shame that the Scout Laws didn't include Honest.

Rich, every time a child without insurance is diagnosed with type 2 diabetes we all pay extra for it. It looks like Mr McCarty is still working on the details here so if you have any suggestions that may improve this bill I'm sure he would appreciate the input.

This is true Patrick. I guess that, at first, we would have to use 19th st but I don't like the idea of going the wrong way on a one way street. Maybe we could use the railroad right of way. For $390,000 I would have actually walked the route and spotted this issue but the issue would remain. Wouldn't be opposed to a grade crossing if we could figure out the whole wire thing.

So it could be up to $390,000 for "A study of possible routes for the streetcar "? How many possible routes are there? Let's see, there's only 2 bridges, pick one. Tower Bridge OK. Down Capitol Mall, right on 9th, left on N, left on 21st, left on I st. across the I st. bridge. (yeah, I opted for both bridges) This get's you within an easy walk to pretty much everything. Old Sacramento, Crocker Art Museum, The Capitol, Lavender heights, The Governors Mansion, Convention Center, City Hall, and Amtrack. Let West Sacramento pay to design their side. Ok now it's done. Don't bother to send me a check. I'll just deduct it from my utility bill since I haven't seen a sweeper truck for 6 months anyway.

Wow. Scheduling maintenance on the eve of the big vote? Isn't this supposed to be a website specifically designed to inform the public prior to a counsel vote? I'm not naturally cynical. I've become cynical over the years because of this type of crap. This is typical Kevin Johnson fashion to schedule maintainence on the night before a big vote. this is the very time that the most people will be wanting to access it. He's hiding something here. I WANT TO KNOW ABOUT THIS AND I AM DENIED INFORMATION BY THE MAYOR AND HIS CRONIES ONCE AGAIN. IT'S MAKING ME AN ANGRY MAN.

There should be no vote until we can get detailed information on this project. I have found lots of information on the other projects and they look pretty good to me and are way less expensive. Remember, these blocks have been blighted for a long time and nothing needs to be decided tomorrow night. Better to have no decision than a bad one.

While I'm not an Arithmatition, I can count to ten and even I can see that this is a sweetheart deal for these developers. This project is doomed to failure.
Rich, The current charter is not called the "accountability plan of 2010". These guys can't even get passed the title without trying to deceive the public. There is nothing there that makes anybody accountable for anything. I refuse to support a draft simply because "it is no more ambiguous than the current charter." KJ is a bully. He bullied his way into Sac High, and he's trying to bully his way through the Counsel to get his way here. He acts like a spoiled 8 year old and we're supposed to give him more power? Not if I have anything to say about it.

They did exactly what I expect from them. The city attorney works for the city not for KJ or his political campaigns. This is reminiscent of him having interns on the federal payroll wash his cars. He, and his campaigns, need to hire their own attorneys.

I remember sitting in many school board meetings and watching as dozens and dozens of parents pleaded with the school board not to close Sac High. It couldn't happen though because half the members of the board were in Kevin Johnsons pocket and it was a done deal, behind closed doors, before anybody ever learned of the idea. Jay Schenirer was one of these school board members. This is NOT the way we want our city run. Sac high was not the worst school in the district, in fact, it was the third highest ranked according to test scores. I had 2 kids who were thriving there and enjoying the high school experience. Vote for ANYBODY but Jay Schenirer.

The only reason to use a private contractor to do audits is to alleviate the concerns of the public about possible conflicts of interest within the city government. If any possible conflict exists between the private auditing firm and city officials, even if it's only perceived, makes the whole thing a waste of money.

The Mayor will, no doubt, like this deal too because his developer buddies will get prime riverfront property to develop while the state gets stuck building a new state fair at a time when it's cutting education and jobs. Once again the Mayor and his buddies get rich while the citizens of our city get f'ed.

It looks like he's dropped the ball on this one. Kudos to the Mayor for coming up with such an original idea like dropping a ball on New Years Eve though.

After several years of not gardening at all I've started again although I still haven't achieved my former green waste recycling capacity yet. Maybe instead of green waste bins they should distribute some nice composting bins and keep cleaning the streets? I've also noticed that they aren't picking up the piles on the right day.
I'm not sure the city has a legal right to stop construction of the plant. What I've heard is that they don't need any special permitting since the property is already zoned as industrial. We could do what they did in an Australian town though and ban the sale of bottled water. The residents there were furious over the prospect of an outsider taking their water, trucking it up to Sydney for processing and then selling it back to them.

Marion, you rock. The first thing KJ did as Mayor was to start his power grab. There were people with petitions almost on election day. It's not being done with the proper public debate but instead through a ballot initiative process. I have issues with this because election results are almost always skewed toward the money and KJ and his sprawl developer cronies are loaded with it. It's time for the citizens of Sacramento to stand up and REJECT THE POWER GRAB.

So... let's see if I've got this right. The mayor proposes a budget. In this budget he proposes a few million for say, The KJ foundation. He gets to vote in the counsel so he only needs 4 votes to pass it. The opposition now needs 5 votes to kill it. Let's say they get the 5 votes and kill it. Except that it's not dead yet. The mayor can veto it. The counsel now needs 7 votes to kill it and the mayor gets one vote already so he only needs 2 votes. The current city counsel could pass a budget giving the KJ foundation a few million while voting 6 to 2 against it. Now there's democracy in action.

The concept of a strong mayor in Sacramento may be worth a look in the future but not this proposal and not this mayor.

The proposal as it stands would give the mayor a vote on the City Counsel and a veto that can only be overridden by 2/3 majority this effectively renders the City Counsel powerless. I'm willing to look at a strong mayor type system but not this one. Our mayor would have more power than any other mayor in the country. This is a power grab and it needs to be stopped.

You're absolutely right. My dad used to manage an EDD office. When there was low unemployment he would have a surplus of money and, at the end of the year, would scramble to spend it all so his next years budget wouldn't be cut. There is no incentive for saving money in fact there is incentive to spend extra money.
