Since you do not live in either neighborhood, you do not know what it is like to live next to a mega-billion dollar business -- a business that provides care, but a business none-the-less. UCD Med Center has more than 12,000 people on its 3.4 million square-feet of land. It will grow aggressively in the next 15 years and, as noted, the Med Center is exempt from the City's permit process. People living next to this have a right to speak up about the affect of the Med Center on their lives. This does not constitute "bitching."
That said, it does not justify the shenanigans of City Council on the redistricting issue.

What can be done is for City Planning to deny the special permit for the drive through. That is an entitlement McD's is asking for with no gain to the community.
Ben, yes neighbors have the right to oppose what goes in their neighborhood, but they need to be balanced in their opposition and not have a narrow view.

Ms. Corker did a fine job with this article. Her job was to cover what happened at Thursday's planning meeting, and she did that admirably. It is a reporter's job to cover timely news, not waggle through all the political nuances surrounding a situation. That is an analysis and cannot be expected in a straight news article. Writers work on deadline Mr. Robertson, really. The only agenda here is yours.

You said it best yourself: "We have a variety of needs in this region. Many of them are more compelling than erecting a sports palace to watch millionaire athletes run up and down the floor."
Our focus as a community at large is how to salvage the diminishing resources we have -- how do we maintain public safety, keep our parks from disrepair and our community centers open. These are bigger quality of life issues affecting many more people than the elite group who can afford Kings tickets.

A closed session meeting concerning such an important position is the sign of a Council so mired in politics that its desperate dealings have to be hidden. The newer members of the City Council are so concerned for their careers that they just go along, stifling whatever modicum of integrity they may have once had. Our current City Council is corrupt and, indeed, inept.

Naturally everyone is bloody angry about this mortgage mess. But think about it for a minute -- you say you have a mortgage you can afford, a monthly payment that's probably about the same as what you would have to pay for an apartment if you do walk away from your house. Unless of course you are planning on living with your mother or something. While you make payments on your house, you are still building equity and the market will stabilize and you will end up ahead.
Still mortgage lenders are complete wankers, but I say don't walk away for spite. It could hurt you more in the long run than you think.

Thanks for covering this. It was an interesting discussion, and Tim Foster did a great job facilitating. I think, perhaps, the Artists Contemporary Gallery, which opened in 1958 and ran about 45 years was the "ACG" gallery referred to, as opposed to Artists Collaborative Gallery.

Interesting topic. I have wondered about the validity of fluoride for years. Brian, is it clearly documented that Sacramento uses Hydrofluosilicic Acid and Sodium Fluoride to fluoridate its water? Also, questions should be posed to the California Dental Association Foundation -- it is the driver of fluoridation in California and has significant funding from the California Endowment.
