About Me

Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society was formed in 1978 to help members with genealogical research through education, publication of information and preservation of records. Membership meetings: monthly on 2nd Wednesday (except Jul/Aug) with speaker. 7pm-8:30pm, Citrus Heights Community Clubhouse, 6921 Sylvan Road, Citrus Heights. Workshops: monthly on 3rd Wednesday. Program: help with research problems and tips on new resources. 1pm-3pm, Country Squire Estates clubhouse, 5720 Oak Hill Drive, Sacramento. Genealogical Library: Housed at California State Archives, 1020 ‘O’ Street, 4th floor, Sacramento, 9:30am – 4pm Monday - Friday, + first Saturday of each month (except holidays). Family History Writing Contest Announced

June 14, 2012 – Sacramento, California: Root Cellar Sacramento Genealogical Society (RCSGS) is seeking entries for its 2nd annual Family History Writing Contest. The deadline is 1 Aug 2012. Your family history research discoveries deserve to be shared.  Honor your ancestors by writing about their lives – telling the story of their struggles, perseverance and survival. Factual articles about family or local history, character sketches, or memoirs will be accepted. Entries should be between 500 and 2000 words in length and submitted electronically only.  The contest is open to the public; membership in RCSGS is not required. California and the Civil War

Step back into the Sierra gold fields in the early 1860s. Our guides will be historical novelists Terry Meekins and Richard Hurley from Grass Valley who will present "California and the Civil War" based on their novel the Queen of the Northern Mines, set in Nevada City in the early years of the Civil War.  The novel was inspired by the famous Bullion Bend stage robbery near Placerville in 1863, where Rebel partisans held up a Wells Fargo shipment and left the driver a receipt for $52,000 from the Confederate States of America.
