Now in its second season, the Oak Park Farmers Market provides neighborhood residents with fresh produce, live music and a sense of community, Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m at McClatchy Park. The market was started by NeighborWorks Sacramento, an organization whose mission it is to strengthen communities and create opportunities for affordable housing. NeighborWorks has made it possible for vendors at the market to accept EBT payments, and, thanks to funding from the Sacramento Hunger Coalition, EBT recipients receive an extra market dollar for every dollar they spend there. The Sacramento Press staff paid the Oak Park Farmer’s Market a visit on Saturday and was not disappointed. W
President Obama recently signed a repeal of “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell,” the policy that for the past 17 years has prohibited gay individuals from serving openly in the military. The repeal will take effect in September. Democratic Assemblyman Roger Dickinson made a public statement expressing his support of President Obama’s decision to overturn DODT. “Members of our military are serving four or five tours of duty, repeatedly putting their lives on the line to serve our country. These heroic men and women who courageously fight to protect us should not be forced to hide their identities,” he said. The Sacramento Press asked citizens at Capital Park to share their thoughts on the repeal of
After six years at the helm of Deep Art and Yoga on H Street, the first yoga studio in Midtown, owner Christine Sukhbir Kaur Collins is passing the space on to Tyler Langdale, owner of Yoga Shala. Though she won’t own the space any longer, Collins will continue to teach Kundalini yoga, which emphasizes focused breathing, meditation and chanting, at Yoga Shala two nights a week. Citing her desire to live a freer, “more relaxed life,” with time to travel, Collins explained that she is ready to relinquish some of the responsibilities that have come with owning Deep, specifically those having to do with finances. “I just won’t have the stress and the responsibility of numbers, which is not
Mayor Kevin Johnson unveiled the future leaders of Sacramento at Tuesday's press conference, introducing 13 of the nation's brightest young people, who will spend the summer working on city issues like homelessness, childhood literacy, downtown revitalization and green development as part of the Mayor's Fellowship and Internship Program. Johnson said that the program, which builds upon the Volunteer Sacramento Initiative, has been the “brainchild” of his chief of staff, Kunal Merchant. The mayor's office has partnered with "the best universities in the country and the region," recruiting students from schools like Harvard, Stanford, UC Davis and Sacramento State, Merchant said. Stressin
Imagine how a rose bush might respond to the heart-racing effect of spicy food or the cleansing experience of an end-of meal “digestif,” and you will begin to understand Jonathan Keats’ “The Photosynthetic Restaurant,” a temporary art installment at the Crocker Art Museum and the topic of discussion at the museum’s most recent Lunch and Learn talk. Crocker representative Rika Nelson said that the point of Lunch and Learn, held every other Thursday at noon, is to “get people together to have a conversation about one selected work at a time” and to examine a piece’s “intricacies and details from the perspective of a visitor.” Nelson led Thursday’s 15-person group in a discussion of Keats’
Sounds cool, I'll check it out.
I was wondering what the statistics were on those discharged as a result of DADT. It sounds like the loss was significant. Aside from its social implications, practically speaking, DADT doesn't seem to make much sense. Thanks for your comment!
Good question. According to Yoga Shala's website, it looks like Julia is right: The studio will be moving from its L Street location into the space formerly known as Deep.
That is an interesting point. Many of the fellows did say that they hoped to settle their careers in Sacramento in the future, but for the time being, you're right, it can be seen as a case of non-Sacramentans advising the mayor on local issues.

And live music! I only wish I'd gotten some photos of the band performing that day.
