In order for McKinley Village to compliment the surrounding neighborhoods, I believe it needs a small grocery store with a gas station or maybe a deli like Roxie's. It also needs more access points. Currently anyone living in the project area might as well live in Elk Grove with no services or amenities nearby.

If the developer is going to punch two holes through the railroad berm (secondary levee), they might as well do it right. Why not create automobile access at Alhambra Blvd.? It is the commercial corridor with closest freeway access and proximity to services. This will help mitigate some of the traffic for the two other locations and increase emergency response times. They want to put a bicycle and pedestrian tunnel instead. Historically, these tunnels have become a haven for the homeless and a good place to conduct drug transactions (look at 14th and C Street tunnel). If this was a first class operation, they would add an additional freeway on ramp.

I'm very disappointed with the plans created by the developer. This isn't a project that will complement or enhance either East Sacramento or Midtown. This project is a better fit for Laguna West then East Sacramento. I was hoping Phil Angelides could do better. It seems that the greenest thing about this project is the weeds that are currently occupying the land right now.

Perhaps you should post up at 28th and J Streets. Here is what happened last night according to a post on the Marshall School/New Era Neighborhood Association Facebook page:

At 1:48 a.m, there was a fight at the corner of 28th and J Street, as literally, hundreds of loud drunk young 20-somethings were leaving the bars on the 2700 block of J Street. Can't say they were all leaving Barwest, but it was 'their kind of crowd'. Eventually, 5 to 6 police units were called to the area. As I watch from the NE corner of 28th & J Street, several police cars were sent to drive around the park. I observed one officer was shining his flashlight into the park as if to look for participants from the fight.

Because of the large crowds of latenight revellers pouring into the AM/PM at 29th & J Street, 3 police cars drove into their parking lot to control the crowd. Separately, one police car patrolled the parking lot at 28th & J Street, using a highbeam light to search the lot.

The neighborhood has been working hard to create a positive interaction with businesses on 28th and J Street. No one wants to constantly be at war with their neighbors.

Most of Sutter District business owners are honorable people who tell the truth. Trevor seems unable to embrace or value this concept. Trevor's only truth is how many hundred dollar bills he can shove into his pockets. Trevor’s approach to the bar business seems to be a “churn and burn” approach.

The neighborhood has had positive interactions with Red Rabbit, Harlow’s (which the sale would not have gone through without cooperation from the neighborhood), and Blue Cue who is now installing an outside deck due to the cooperation of the neighborhood association. Those positive interactions have been covered in the media as well.

http://www.sacramentopress.com/headline/75333/Midtown_residents_rally_to_support_music_venue_and_police_listen

Perhaps there is a reason we hear nothing but bad news about BarWest. Giving BarWest an entertainment permit is like sending the fox into the hen house. If you give Trevor an inch, he will take a mile. BarWest’s track record with the neighborhoods speaks for itself.

I would like to call BarWest a “restaurant” but having tried the food at BarWest, I compare it to McDonalds. The only difference is that the service is better at McDonalds. Trevor runs a good nightclub but has been unable to show good restaurateur skills at BarWest. His mentor, Randy Paragary, needs to teach Trevor how to put out a good food product. Otherwise, stop lying to your neighbors, City government, and ABC by calling BarWest a “restaurant” when it is really a place to get drunk on 64oz fishbowls filled with booze, ice and mixer.

Has Midtown become the personal ATM machine for gang bangers and parolees? Perhaps Sacramento County should issuing permits to carry concealed weapons so that residents and business owners in the Central City can defend themselves without fear of criminal prosecution. It is the County that cut the budget for probation officers to monitor parolees. It is also County that have pushed the homeless into the Central City and off the America River Parkway. Now it is up to the County to help us defend ourselves against these criminal threats.

I think that the survey included with this story was a great idea. The survey results really nailed the focal points of Midtown. Clean and safe streets should be the number one concern of Midtown.

The "business noise" category was only an issue for 2% of people who filled out the survey. So while I continue to hear how we need to get rid of businesses that serve alcohol and play music, I wonder why these people moved to Midtown in the first place. We all make decisions about where we live. Midtown provides many different ecosystems with different noise levels, street traffic, parks, and neighbors. Perhaps some of the complaints are from homeowners who didn't do their due diligence when selecting their homes? It would be real interesting to see if Dale Kooyman, Thomas Wendel, and Lisa B. have the gumption to knock on doors, actually talk with their neighbors, and get 100 people in Midtown to fill out the survey to show how important an issue "business noise" actually is to the residents of Midtown. Real change occurs when you actually connect with people on a personal level. You might just learn this isn't the big issue you assume (and represent) it is for Midtown.

Bar West is another example of a business trying to work with t a Midtown neighborhood and become a good neighbor in Midtown. They reached out for our comments and concerns, yet the same old snakes seem to slither out of their holes with antiquated ideas as to how things should be done in this neighborhood - - fight first and ask questions later. What makes me disappointed is that I've got friends who are getting furloughed from their city and state jobs so that we can pay for this mockery. Instead of meeting good businesses half way, it's "business" as usual for the "usual suspects." What also bothers me most is that the same snakes don't apply the same rules for the bars in Lavender Heights. I would be happy if these snakes could just slither back into their holes until they come up with some productive ideas.

I would like at the City to figure out how many tax paying dollars have wasted during the last 25 years with these obstructionist ideas. I wonder how much of this "business as usual" contributes to the budget deficit our City faces. How much time is sucked up by the City Council, the Mayor's office, and the City of Sacramento staff entertaining the never ending list of objections from the "usual suspects"? You would think that with 25 years experience with neighborhood issues that the "usual suspects" would have found a way to create consensus and compromise like our neighbors in East Sacramento. I would at least like it if the City Staff and business community would challenged the "usual suspects" to come up with positive solutions, compromise, and civility.

I've been following Sacramentopress.com for awhile and only see negative ideas and complaining from the "usual suspects." This neighborhood is continuing to evolve. If you can't evolve with it then maybe you have outlived your time here. Midtown isn't for everyone. It will never be the quiet, bucolic suburb that you would like it to be. Try talking with real estate agents from all over the region and they will tell you that Midtown is coming into its own.

My advice - - try a little "kumbaya" to create some good will with the businesses (and your neighbors) and maybe they will work with you. First you attack the businesses and now you attack your neighbors for trying work with the businesses. Exactly who are you saving Midtown for and from? Midtown property values have closed the gap with East Sacramento over the last 15 years. Hmmm, could it perhaps be the expansion of restaurant choices and cultural attraction such as Second Saturday that might have contributed to the upswing? People want to live here for the exact things you are trying to kill. Once again, who are you trying to save Midtown for and from?

Instead of creating a collaborative, cooperative environment, Mr. Kooyman is bent on personally attacking a member of our neighborhood (Mark Hefling). He is also trying to discredit the efforts of the Marshall School-New Era Park Neighborhood Association to spread the truth about projects in this neighborhood. Exactly who are you trying to save Midtown for or from?

While I appreciate my neighbors' concerns, I have a huge dilemma. Four people should not decide the fate of a whole neighborhood. Karen, Dale, Vito, and Bill (who no longer lives in the neighborhood) aren't knocking on doors, trying to build a consensus, or finding common ground that facilitates compromise. Instead they use the concept of "urban planning" in a attempt to build a moat around Midtown. I am saddened by their recommendations for restricted parking, the restructuring of Second Saturday, assuming all business that possess an alcohol license are bad businesses, and blaming outsiders for behavior I attribute to mostly our neighbors.

Lets start with restricted parking, which is not popular with the majority of my neighbors. The issue has been voted on twice and rejected by the neighborhood twice. So much for democracy but I guess the "Fab Four" know better than the masses.

If the "Fab Four" have their way, I will have to bus in family and friends when I want to entertain. Who is paying for the the cost of additional parking enforcement? Is this on the tab of the "Fab Four"? Don't forget the additional costs of parking enforcement officers such as health care costs, administration costs, and retirement benefits.

Second Saturday is a festive event where the City of Sacramento and the Midtown Business Association have tweaked to address issues that have happened in the past. The "Fab Four" are not even giving these new proposals a chance to be implemented. Their agenda - - my way or the highway. Doesn't seem to be in the Spirit of Midtown.

I enjoy attending Second Saturday and dining at restaurants in my neighborhood. I disagree with my neighbors about who is walking in the neighborhood at 2:00 a.m. From my vantage point as a longtime Midtown resident, it seems to be residents and suburbian folks mixed together in our neighborhood.

I also have a problem when I hear that neighbors are fighting with good businesses like Zocolo, Red Lotus and other fine restaurants. Why are my neighbors fighting with these high quality dining establishments that happen to have a bar? Why is there selective exclusion of the bars at 20th and K Street? How come no one addresses the over-concentration of bars at 20th and K Street? How many bars at 20th and K Street serve food along with alcohol?

Karen, Dale, and Vito - if you want to seriously pursue this agenda, you might want to start knocking on some doors. The opinions of a small number of people are not persuasive to the masses. If you want people to believe your proposals are a good idea for our community, you need to find 400 people to agree. If people agree with you, it should not be to difficult.
