Yes. I think that's preferable to the alternative. As I've said here before, our site is meant as a forum for citizen journalism. Those who want to reach our readers for marketing and PR purposes should go through the advertising route. We will make sure posts are correctly labeled, as this one is, and are well presented. Our advertisers are our partners and it is because of their support that we can continue to provide this platform, so readers like yourself can continue to give their feedback, which we always appreciate :).

Hi readers, editor here:

I just took down a comment from user "xmasfuture" because it made a blanket accusation against the MBA and lacked any specifics or facts to substantiate it. The comment skirted the line of what is allowed on Sac Press, and there was a bit of a debate here about whether it should stay. In the end, I decided to take it down as I didn't think it fit our site rules, but if you want to read more of what the writer has to say, you can find it elsewhere on the internet, here:

I would say that a live blog itself does have value, but some cases more than others. It worked well with the TDA forum, but not as well here. The ideal is to have the story and the blog, as with BierGarten today: http://www.sacramentopress.com/headline/80829/Midtown_BierGarten_is_a_go

In cases like that, the "as it happened" part gives a different perspective on what occurred, and often extra information or quotes/perspectives that didn't end up in the article. This adds to the story, and also gives insight into how the story was produced.

In that case at least, it's not pointless.

Editor here: Cogmeyer - you are ignoring the facts. It matters if the crime was done in a way to intimidate or harass gay people. It matters if the attack was conducted because the victim was gay, and the facts, as we know them so far, indicate that may have been the case. This is not only an assault, but the worse kind of bigotry, and that needs to be pointed out.

The Sacramento Press is not neutral what it comes to anti-gay bigotry anymore than we are when it comes to racist bigotry. They are one in the same. Human rights are human rights.

You say, "And I'm sorry to break it to the 20 and 30-somethings but you didn't start the back to the cities movement."

Who said they did? In the article, William Burg says:

"There have been several generations over the last 40 years or so interested in returning to the central city and in living downtown."

And, to respond to your comment, who said anything about everyone from the 80s and 90s DIY punk scene in Sacramento "being dead"?

The demographics are real and part of the discussion. They also cause tension, and that plays out in our comments section on quite a few topics, including this one.

Editor here: I don't think it's accurate to say that The Kay is overrun with crime because of a bar fight on a Friday night. I am there just about every night during the week, and often catch the light rail there fairly late. The area is not as safe as I'd like to be later at night during the week (there are usually some transients waiting for the train with me, and sometimes someone smoking a joint) but I don't live in fear. As you said, the police presence is already pretty tight, and a place like KBar doesn't strike me as all that wild, though idiots can be idiots anywhere. What would you suggest be done to improve security?

Um, I wrote that. My point is that anyone is entitled to an opinion, and if a PR person wants to join the debate they can, so long as they don't engage in misleading talking points or other b.s. I'm not picking on PR people, that applies to anyone. For what it's worth, I have never seen an op-ed submitted by someone in PR and I doubt that will change anytime soon. Most PR reps will prefer to remain neutral on a controversial topic. They might help a politico or an organization respond, but then it's not under their byline.

As for your comments on nonprofits, I tried to give us enough leeway so we could evaluate individual cases. I am very familiar with Guidestar and Charity Navigator and will continue to use them.

To respond to a question I got via email: PR professionals, or anyone else for that matter, will still be free to write op-eds about local issues, as long as their affiliations are properly disclosed. Like if a nonprofit wants to weigh in on a development issue or a city policy, they are welcome to make their case on Sac Press, like anyone else. The key in this case is that they would not be writing about themselves, but rather making an argument about a larger community-wide issue.

Tony: I too like that style, but to do that effectively and in a way that is manageable, we'd have to invest in third party software that is meant for live blogging, so you can see the updates in the order they are inputed. Since we've started to do more live and breaking news, perhaps it's time we took that step.

The AP does rewrite their story, as does McClatchy and most MSM outlets. Reuters, The Guardian, the NYT's Lead blog, Aljazeera and lots of other outlets use the approach you're talking about. I prefer it - but it's very hard to do manually when under tight time constraints. Of course, all the outlets I just cited have platforms adapted for live coverage.

And I appreciate your comments. They are well-reasoned, often provocative and, in times like this, helpful.

We're a hyperlocal publication and cover hard news and community news in the grid. Crime and public safety is part of that coverage as it's important to residents and a big chuck of our readers (including 2JLynn). Most of these items are not covered by the Bee or KCRA, which have a much larger coverage area and scope. It's true we didn't cover breaking or crime in the grid previously, but that's changed over the last few months.

It's actually referred to as a "Hazmat" team, one word, no capitalization. The short version is a word and is correct, but it should not have been capitalized. The confusion came from the fact that the fire department writes it on the fire trucks in all-caps, as seen in the photo.

Sacramento ranks 24th, but when you look at the neighborhood level, you see the high walkability score of the central city neighborhoods is brought down by the low scores in the suburbs.
If you talk to new business owners in the area, they will tell you there is a shortage of residents. See this chat with Andrew Lopez of Broadacre Coffee and Carina Lampkin of Blackbird Kitchen & Bar (http://www.sacramentopress.com/headline/74697/Chat_Rebranding_K_Street_to_The_Kay). The argument I've heard is that new residential development could help fill that need by drawing new people to the central city. Whether that's true or not is a complex question, as there are a lot of push/pull factors to consider, but it's a fairly typical issue for downtown commercial areas. In his interview with NPR (see link above), Speck says that most mid sized cities "do not have a proper ratio of housing downtown" and that the "proper balance of use" in a community is part of what makes it walkable.

I think the only area of the piece that conveys that tone is the lead, which is punchy, but could use a reference to the the stated objective of the city's actions. Objectivity isn't so much the goal as fairness and transparency. There is a line between "perspective" and "shrill" that is hard to straddle - and it's topic I'm always happy to discuss. I encourage our writers to use their voice and writer with perspective as long as the facts are accurate and the article is fair and includes both sides.
I've been thinking about this, and it seems we got the contest wrong. My mustaches is admittedly whimpy and it deserves to be put out of its misery. Randy's, on the other hand, is a testament to his manly machoness and should live on as a symbol of masculine vitality.

The problem is that the contest is set up so that the looser keeps his mustache while the winner shaves his. Is this fair to Randy's mustache? I think not.

So, dear reader, support Randy's mustache by VOTING FOR ME! Yes, you heard it right, a vote for Jared is a vote for Rany's mustache. Let it live, let it prosper and continue to grow and expand across new frontiers.

SUPPORT RANDY BALZARANO'S MUSTACHE - VOTE FOR JARED.

The argument that Terry Preston is making is that there are too few crossings. This creates scenarios where, for instance, someone will cross in the middle of the block rather than going down a quarter of a mile to the nearest legal crossing.
The article I wrote says this: "A man in his 30s was killed during an early morning gunfight in the parking lot next to the Ampm gas station at the intersection of 28th and J streets in Midtown, according to the Sacramento Police Department.

Police spokesman Sgt. Andrew Pettit said that while it is still early in the investigation, the evidence police have collected so far indicates that the victim may have been an innocent bystander who was caught in the crossfire as two subjects fired at each other from opposite corners of 28th and J streets."

Is that clearer? As for who the lot, not sure. Is that relevant, and if so, how? I'm not asking to be snide - it would just be good to have the information out there. Post away.

@Voice: I understand that you'd like more crime coverage, but it's not all we do, and we're doing as much as we can. I do have plans to eventually increase coverage on public safety – the need is clear – but this will only happen after we have our new reporter on board and trained. In the meantime, we welcome posts from residents about crime, or any other issues, in their neighborhood, and we can help with things like FIOA requests. If you're interested, let us know, or check out the "contribute" link in the navigation bar.

The casings were found in the parking lot next to ARCO lot. (I saw them, was on the scene). The story we link to there has the details, but I can adjust the wording. Thanks.

On the bike trail right now (Folsom or bust!) but let me say for now that I did not make the claim you're claiming I did. Bars have opened, and there are issues there to look at, but there are a lot of other factors to consider when thinking about the crime rate, and bars have dominated the debate in way that is, I believe, disproportionate to their significance. Good discussion all around though. Lots of data to look through. I'll highlight everyone's points in an update tonight and go data hunting tomorrow.
