The forum on the McKinley Village development held Saturday morning in Midtown probably didn't change anyone's mind, but the over two hour long discussion did help better define the stances of those for and against the proposal to transform one of Sacramento's largest pieces of undeveloped land near the central city. Th event was hosted by the Sacramento Old City Association at the Midtown Village Cafe. You can listen to the full audio and add your own notes below. (Feel free to label speakers and respond to specific points - just hover your mouse over the relevant moments in the track and add comments.) Sacramento firefighters recovered a body from the Sacramento River Wednesday afternoon near the boat ramp at Discovery Park, four days after a 16-year-old failed to resurface while swimming at Sand Cove Park. A crew recovered the body of an African-American male, according to Battalion Chief Jonathan Williams, but it is unconfirmed whether it is that of the missing teenager. The body was first spotted by a kayaker. Officials have said it can be dangerous to swim at the Sand Cove because of currents caused by the sharp bend in the river, according to KCRA. Authorities have urged swimmers to use lifejackets in the river, as unpredictable currents and cold water can make for a deadly com
For the past two years, the city of Sacramento has stopped issuing permits for medical marijuana dispensaries, and the number of local dispensaries has shrink from 34 to 20, according to city documents. Existing dispensaries have found it difficult to reopen if they needed to move, because of the city's code requirements that all new dispensaries be at least 600 feet from schools or parks or 300 feet from a residence – a tall order in dense areas like the central city. All that could be about to change if the City Council follows staff recommendations to be discussed at Tuesday's Law and Legislation Committee meeting. The recommendation calls for the city to: - Allow existing dispensarie
Can a sports bar go farm to fork? Loren Sparks, the general manager at Skybox Grill, is about to find out. Skybox quietly replaced the MVP Sports Grill at L and 22 streets in Midtown last month (as noted by Cowntwown Eats) and Sparks is in the process of revamping the menu, staff and design of the restaurant in preparation for a grand opening the week of June 24. "We're going to get with the times and get a lot more consistent, a lot more local" he said. "The menu is going to be a lot more fresh, with made-to-order items." Skybox will, as the name suggests, still be a sports bar with wall-to-wall TVS, but one where there is a greater emphasis on quality food with fresh and local in
Thanks. It always helps when they are pointed out with specifics through - we're a small crew and can use the extra eyes.
A bit ironic for a bar that called itself "Vanguard," however.
You missed my point, allow me to make it clearer: Longtime homeowners are more likely to be on the boards of neighborhood associations like resident associations, which have an established role in the political process, and as "recognized" leaders, they have contacts within the political and media scenes. Renters or aspiring homeowners don't tend to have these official roles. This doesn't mean they aren't informed, but it does mean that they dont tend to have as much established lobbying power. I pointed this out because I think its important that this group not be overlooked. The fact that aspiring homeowners don't have titles doesn't mean they shouldn't have a seat at the table. And to point out my own biases, this is my demo too. I'm 31. I'd like to move into the grid, and find a house with a yard that doesn't need a lot of work and that would be suitable for a young child. That's not an easy find, and I'm sure people in similar situations would find McKinley Village an attractive option. For the record, no, I won't be moving there, but I do personally understand, based on my own scenario, why people would want to.
Michael: Quick question there - I looked online and I didn't see the Swainson’s Hawk listed as an endangered species, so I didn't include that, but I could be missing something. I did mention the concerns about its nesting area though. If you can point me to where it is listed, that would help. I can check around today as well. @Alan was responding to a comment that we took down b/c we don't allow personal attacks on the site, or name calling, even when it's an interesting metaphor. Disagree with Shultz, point out why you think he made the wrong choice = OK. Insults that won't be on daytime T.V. = Not OK.
