Harvey Milk Foundation host Harvey Milk Day with landmark conversation on law requiring LGBT history in public schools

The Harvey Milk Foundation celebrates the third annual Harvey Milk Day in Sacramento, Calif. and joins together with the California Legislative LGBT Caucus and Equality California (EQCA) to host a breakthrough conversation on the implementation and benefits of Senate Bill (SB) 48.

This is an important event that families, educators, students, policy leaders and civil rights advocates should attend. Substance and celebration:

The Fair, Accurate, Inclusive, and Respectful (FAIR) Education Act (SB 48), authored by Senator Mark Leno and signed into law by Governor Edmund G. Brown, Jr. in 2011, requires public schools to teach LGBT history. While the act went into effect on January 1, 2012, it has yet to be implemented into California’s public school curriculum standards. A panelist of policy, education and civil rights leaders celebrate the California holiday for slain politician, Harvey Milk, by addressing bullying and discrimination in schools. Solutions to mitigate these growing issues could develop as more students have access to factual information about social movements, current events and history of LGBT people.

In 2009, the California State Legislature passed, and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger signed, SB 572 designating every May 22 as "Harvey Milk Day.” SB 572 was authored by Senator Mark Leno.

Sacramento's release party for "The Times of Harvey Milk"

Criterion Films is re-releasing the Award Winning Documentary "The Times of Harvey Milk" and the Harvey Milk Foundation will host the official viewing celebration in Sacramento on Tuesday, May 17. This viewing is the first of many weeklong events to celebrate Harvey Milk Day 2011.

The evening kicks off with an exclusive conversation between Stuart Milk, nephew of LGBT activist Harvey Milk and the founder of the Harvey Milk Foundation, and Assemblymember Tom Ammiano (D-San Francisco) on Harvey Milk’s impact and efforts underway in Sacramento to keep his legacy alive. Greg Lucas, the chief correspondent of California's Capitol, will moderate this conversation.

This event is brought to you by the Harvey Milk Foundation, VSP Vision Care, Hot Italian Pizza & Panini Bar, the California Biotechnology Foundation, The California Museum, Equality California (EQCA), and many others. This event is FREE with RSVP (see flyer for details).

May 22, 2010 marked the very first “Harvey Milk Day” and the official launch of the Harvey Milk Foundation. The Harvey Milk Foundation was established in 2010 as a non-profit charitable organization. TEAM MARIA hosts spin-a-thon & auction during Second Saturday Art Walk.

TEAM MARIA, lead by First Lady of California, Maria Shriver, will ride in the Audi Best Buddies Challenge – a 100-mile bike ride on September 11 from Carmel to San Simeon to support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities. With a goal to raise $200,000 for the Challenge, TEAM MARIA is hosting a silent auction and spin-a-thon at 1801 L Street on August 14, 2010.

Sacramento to Host: Harvey Milk-A Celebration!

The Harvey B. Milk Foundation and Founder, Stuart Milk, invites you to the Harvey Milk-A Celebration! on May 12th, 2010 at The California Museum.

Sacramento will host an event to launch the new Harvey B. Milk Foundation and to celebrate the first ever “Harvey Milk Day” – thanks to the California State Legislature and Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger’s enactment of SB 572 last year, which declares every May 22nd Harvey Milk Day.

TEAM MARIA Joins in The Audi Best Buddies Challenge

TEAM MARIA set out early Saturday, September 12 on the fundraising bike ride from Carmel through Big Sur to Hearst Castle Beach in support of Best Buddies International, a community for helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities.

TEAM MARIA exceeded their goal to raise $30,000 for Best Buddies by earning $80,000 in only six weeks.

TEAM MARIA had riders on each of the four distance legs of the race – all riders completed the Challenge. TEAM MARIA includes Capitol insiders: Former Speaker Fabian Nunez; Staff from Dewey Square Group and Lucas Public Affairs and First Lady Maria Shriver's friends, family and staff.
