What a great read! I'd clicked on the piece thinking it was about some colorful Midtown lady who'd been rambling the streets for years. Much to my surprise, it was about a dog. I was starting to gripe about all the coverage for a dog, but I'll admit I just couldn't stop reading & it was wonderful! Maybe there will be a Sheila #2 in the future?

A conference introduction speaker prepossessed with Homosexuality felt compelled to display those thoughts to everyone. Before announcing the guest speaker at a "professional seminar" the presenter is heralding his proclivity to think of Homosexuality and mirthfully regales an audience to think likewise. As the guest speaker/salesman takes the stage it becomes a "here we go again" situation. A (former) pro athlete seemingly obsessed by thoughts of Homosexuality; speaks just momentarily before his predisposition is projected at an audience in a verbalized attempt to convey his thoughts. If "SEX SELLS" then I must be witnessing one wild attempt at achieving a "psycho sexual cerebral emotional cortex synapses connection" which results in the biggest company in the world with full domestic partner program participation OR the melting point of brain tissue.

Bill Burgua’s “opinion” piece is a fantastic example of what is wrong with the concept of “citizen journalism.” It has long been documented on this very website that Mr. Burgua has a specific opinion and agenda regarding the businesses located on the 2700 block of J Street, near his former residence. It is unfortunate that Mr. Burgua’s decided to exploit two tragedies to further his cause.

First, he automatically assumes there is some connection between the shooting death at 28th and J Street and the adjacent restaurant/bar businesses. Why wait for the facts when we can try people and businesses in the court of public opinion. Perhaps in his zeal to get out that message, he did not peruse Nick Miller’s Editor’s Note in the “Sacramento News and Review.” Miller observed that there was “an actual gang shootout on the same block featured in my story.” The journalist observed that “the deadly crossfire of two idiot crews playing gangbanger killed the 32 year old.”
I hope a trained journalist will follow that line of thinking to discover the truth of the circumstances of Mr. Long’s death. Perhaps a trained journalist will look into the other shooting that occurred in May at the AM/PM at 28th and J Streets. On May 11, an employee called 911 to report that a male was shooting up a car in the AM/PM parking lot. A trained journalist will know how to confirm that fact. The truth is not only the easiest thing to remember, it is the easiest thing to report.

Instead of facts, Sacramento Press readers are treated to an “opinion” piece about regarding a 15-page diatribe by a man who feels wronged by his former business partners and the legal system. Did even Burgua consult with Mr. Ortner before posting his manifesto?

Pick up the “Sacramento Bee” and on any given day you will read about a shooting incident or death in our community. As Mr. Miller stated in his Editor’s Note: “Residents, meanwhile, are using Long’s death as occasion to push even harder for disbanding the block’s boozy party scene. But they should be wary of pinning the shootout on the bars. It’s the guns. It’s the guns. It’s the guns.”
We need the police to help restore safety and security to Midtown. We need the police to come when we call - - not 30 to 40 minutes later. Tragedies such as Joseph Long’s death are supposed to bring the community together to find a better way to live. In Midtown, we tear each other apart to further our own long-held agendas and grudges. I mourn for Mr. Long and the loss his family suffers. I also mourn for the loss of the soul of Midtown.

Mayor Johnson, what are you planning to do to heal Midtown or do you even care?

I decided to take my wife out to see a play this seemed like it would be a comedy or maybe some kind of western. I could not have been more wrong but it still was a great and energetic performance. The play is full of wrestling matches and one of the actors even pours a can of beer on his head. There is just three characters in the play and for the two brothers are the only ones most of the play. The performance is set in southern California suburbia in around the 1950’s. One brother is a heavy drinking wildman while the other is a college grad with a career in writing. Both of the brothers want to be like the other, the writer wants to be wild and free and live in the desert in contrast the wild brother really would like to be well off like his brother. During the play they end up switching roles and this is extremely funny and the audience was falling out of their seats. The play does not go where you think it will go and once it ends this makes it even better because how many times are these performances so predictable. Everything in the play is extreme for example the wild brother smashes an old type writer to pieces with a golf club, and I am sitting there wondering are they destroying a typewriter every night? The play is not for everyone, my wife said it was not her favorite but was a little tired so maybe the noise and loud nature of the play was the reason. The capital theatre is kind of small so you really feel right there in it which was a first for me to be in such a small place with that much going on. All in all I would recommend this to anyone ready for some action. I would not suggest this to anyone who is mild mannered and looking for a quiet and peaceful evening.

Pay the author ! !?? What a fabulous idea. Please understand the concept here that I am writing a review of a Cabaret performance of music by Andrew Lloyd Webber not a complete overview of his musical career.

If you feel like I have slighted "Love Never Dies it is a perfect example of one of the points I make in the article. Lloyd Webber has a long history of a concept album and reworking material, eventually the building these projects to a mega-hit. Eventually love never dies is likely to return to be a big hit in the West End and eventually cross the pond to be a big hit on Broadway and then to tour forever.

Now I am more concerned about the wonderful Mark Ettensohn's name being misspelled in two places in the article, which both myself and the editor missed.

Now in regards to research. with a few key words I can find more information than I could ever use on each review I write-and so can anyone. If someone can get to SacPress than they can easily find tons more information themselves. I can link when I feel it is appropriate, but if something someone finds something interesting they e always welcome to go investigate themselves.

Please do not let this discourage you from commenting on SacPress. As a friend pointed out recently, SacPress runs on the comments not the contents.

I myself welcome any comments that add to the conversation. Written in a different way your comment could have easily added to the interest of the article.

In general in regards to comments made on my articles, before I do respond I do research who made the comment. When their name is a combination of letters and numbers and do not seem to exist in any other way I feel that their comment is worth what they were paid for it.

Thanks Joe,

I don't think that you or I need to tell readers that if they want to see high quality productions that are truly brought to a convenient location that discounted matinées are the way to go. But if you enjoy an evening out to see Broadway Sacramento and don't have season tickets you better snatch up individual tickets ASATAA (as soon as the are available) for each show. With one week shows the demand is more than filling the seats for this entertainment.

First off I would like to make a rather major correction: the 8th paragraph should start "Production designer Mark Thompson. In no way would I wish to not fully acknowledge Mr. Thompson's major contribution to "Mama Mia." The whole look and feel of the production was a large part of the evening's entertainment.

Howard Harrison's lighting took the whole visual to another level.

It was obvious that there was strong collaboration between the two and the both used lots of tricks to create great effects.

Thanks to "Mama Mia" National tour press offices! I am glad I have some readers in New York and Chicago.

If I remember my college lit classes correctly, Ms. Shelley's themes in Frankenstein were the responsibilities of bringing life into the world, and the difficult relationships of parents and children. The original F-monster is very articulate, vengeful and scheming. Halloween is a great time to pick up the original story, and be surprised by the directions it took in scary movies over the years!

It was also great to see a sold-out theater! :)

2nd photo correction: That is Lisa Ferris in the photo with Jacquelyn Piro Donovan and Aaron Serotsky as an ensemble member. Page Silvester does perform the role of Bet but it is not her in the photograph.

Thankfully none of the kids in the Junior Company were identified. In a previous review of a show at another theater company with a lot of kids in it the photographer had to identify several children in each shot while they were moving about rapidly in a rehearsal. We got a lot of "that is my child in the photograph" from parents.

This show is bound to entertain the adult audience but is also kid friendly. The family guide recomends it for youth age four and over.

Originally the NAG (Neighborhood Advisory Group) was the NAAG (Neighborhood Association Advisory Group). Association was in the title because there were several active Neighborhood Associations in the central city, which collectively formed the Central City Alliance of Neighborhoods (CCAN). They had learned by meeting each other accidentally at council meetings and reading the Sutter Town News, etc. that they were all having similar problems with city services and staff opposition to resident needs, including preservation of historic homes and other structures, Banding together gave us a cooperative voice that could overcome the city's tactic "divide and conquer."

Then Bill Edgar became city manager, the city had fallen into bad fiscal shape. He respected and recognized that many residents had several ideas which could be implemented and save the city money in the central city. He reasoned that if that resource existed here, then it must be equally so citywide. So he crafted a plan to institute a city wide "Barn Raising" event (a concept borrowed from the days when a barn burned down, all neighbors came together to help rebuild it) and together "Barn Raising" to help the city pull through the fiscal emergency.

Through a series of citywide workshops he tapped into residents' skills, knowledge, abilities to find that volunteerism could provide many of the same services as city employees who were going to be laid off due to that fiscal emergency. He also learned that residents knew best what services and resources neighborhoods could be reduced or eliminated and those which residents felt were essential to them.

It was then he created four Neighborhood Service Areas through out the city. Mike Hanamura was our first Area Manager and Fernandez the second. There were several of us who had been "burned" by the city before and while liking Bill and staff he appointed to work with us, we remained suspicious. To ensure that the city did not slip back to its old ways, we in Area 1 then formed the NAAG to hold meetings to continue our communication.

We also found it necessary to create an Action Request Form (ARF) which the NAAG "chair" and city partner completed jointly at the meeting to record an issue/problem, recommendation to resolve that lack of service problem, assign staff responsibility for resolving the issue/problem and a report back when it had been resolved. It was through the more than excellent management skills of Hanamura and Fernandez that several years of productive problem solving and neighborhood improvement followed.

We look back now to realize that the Edgar/Martinez/Crist/Hanamura/ Fernandez team were the golden years, which enabled Midtown as well as other parts of the central city to become the precious and unique area of that city that attracted families and those investing to preserve historic houses to return to livable, pedestrian oriented neighborhoods that that once were here.

The restoration and improvements attracted artists, musicians, a variety of offices and businesses to move here as well as dinner houses and live theatres. All were warmly welcomed, including the intial few entertainment clubs, which many of us patronized. Some worked with Midtown Businesses to hold events such as Halloween trick or treat, sidewalk sales, art and Christmas festivities.

It is because of these years of hard work and eventual success that turned the area from a slum to the livable mixed ethnic and income area that it became and we oldies and newer home owners guard so fiercely against the heretofore uninterested alcohol businesses, the over concentration of which now threaten to degrade our quality of life.

David Sedaris will be at the Crest for two nights this fall. Cap Public Radio had a drawing for two tickets for the show as part of their fundraising yesterday.

Beware, David Sedaris is very popular and his appearances often sell out. When tickets go on sale pick one up or you may loose out.

Be warned that this play is not really suitable for children. In Bill Burgua's review he suggests that adults will enjoy the references to homosexuality and cross dressing in the play. He also states that children will see them as silly. I think he needs to give children more credit. My 11 and 13 year old daughters were disturbed by these references. The dialogue certainly did not go over their heads. And as an adult I found the comments offensive and not suitable for a family friendly show.

Thank you for posting this! I wonder if any of these items will be available for home owners to purchase? It seems like many California residents could stand to save a buck or two on their air conditioning bills these days... Thanks again.
