When Levi and Jessie Benkert from local development firm LJ Urban decided to leave their Midtown business and pack up their families to start an orphanage in Ethiopia, something had to be done with their workspace until 2010. When Brandon Weber, marketing consultant to LJ Urban, found out about the company's hiatus and downsizing, he wanted to make the warehouse building into a co-working space, and he posted the idea on his blog. Meanwhile, James Pierini and his friend Janna Santoro, who had been working on bringing co-working to Sacramento, were looking for other work-at-home professionals who would be interested in sharing a physical office space, when they came across Weber's blog. Artist, Jennifer J. O'Neill-Pickering is speaking the language of flowers at Capitol Public Radio through watercolors. Have you ever wondered what the veiled meaning is that is associated with a specific flower? Then, you might want to go view the twenty-three watercolor paintings by artist, Jennifer J. O'Neill-Pickering, on display at Capital Public Radio through June 26th. Different cultures and different periods of time have assigned various meanings to flowers and some of these are still with us today. During Victorian England, these meanings developed into a language called Floriography. People then selected different flower bouquets to convey various thoughts and feelings to their f
Second Saturday has grown in popularity during the past few years, to the point where Sacramento police have asked for citizens' help. Because of declining budgets and the growing crowds at Second Saturday, there are not enough police available to perform crossing guard duty. To that end, Midtown Business Association Executive Director Rob Kerth sent out the following email: "Hi Folks, Our Sac PD Captain, Dana Matthes, is looking for a few good people to do crossing guard duty on 2nd Saturday. If you've got the urge to help out, or know someone who might, please give her a call at 808-4511. They have a training program to get you all ready. Thanks!"
I see you all the time at Tupelo Coffee House, but you don’t know me. We both like it that way. Neither of us will exchange a word, but I have created your brief back-story for my own entertainment. It is fiction, but this is the nature of our relationship. I have 900 Facebook friends, and I frequent all the same spots, but I do not know anyone. We work here, meet here, and play here. When home is where the couch is, we spend most of our waking hours out and about; returning home only to crash for the night. Time is calculated in semesters, leases, and rental agreements instead of years or friendships. Neighbors have come to represent mysteries rather than faces or lives. Forgotten are t

This Second Saturdays Art Walk will be the first time that Lori Wylie and Terrie Bennett will open their new art gallery to show art lovers what their new generation of metal art looks like. The path that has brought them together through tough and trying times, could be a good example of one of lifes "intersections" where people cross each others paths and find themselves in a whole new direction. Their art seems to be getting better with time and they are transforming their ideas in metal art with each new technique. Lori Wylie and her previous husband, world reknowned artist Doug Wylie, had created their niche in bronze sculpture once they discovered they could take their ceramic tech

This weekend is Valentine's Day, Second Saturday, and the beginning of the Amgen Tour of California, so there will be plenty to do. Understandably, many people will be out in search of some good eats, to look at art, and to hear some live music. So why not do all three? This Saturday, Feb. 14, from 7-10 p.m. Vintage Cafe will be holding an art and live music event. Ana Candioti will be displaying her Afro-Haitian art to honor Black History Month, and attendees can enjoy live music from the DoubleLion Band, Ruben Lopez, and Ryan McCarroll. The event is hosted by Bridge to Art, a group of arts promoters, educators, and artists, founded by local art promoter and events producer Kevin L. Sa

There's a lot to do this weekend in Sacramento, with the Amgen race on Saturday and all its attendant events; and then there's Second Saturday, with a number of great openings at local galleries. But if you're up for music, there's a bit less to choose from. Still, there's enough to check out, and quite a bit to look forward to. Tickets are going on sale this Saturday and Sunday for a number of upcoming shows. More about that in a moment. First, perhaps the most interesting live music event of the weekend is the Mega Bollywood Show this Valentine's Saturday, at the Crest Theatre. Colleen Belcher's story about the event on SacramentoPress.com says it all about a show that is going to be
Parker Scott is a local artist whose eclectic style blends elements of graffiti, traditional Japanese wood block prints, tattoo art and Chinese characters. Currently a student of graphic design at CSUS, Scott is back from a one-year hiatus from art exhibitions, during which he DJ’d Hip Hop. The art of Parker Scott will be displayed at Formoli’s Bistro (3260 J St.), with an opening reception on Second Saturday, 6-9 p.m. Jan. 10. The images attached to this article will be displayed at Formoli's. Is there an era of art that you really admire? I absolutely love Japanese wood block prints. That’s probably one of the things that got me into art in general. But I really enjoy the classical st
Sacramento's fourth annual bird show, Aves: A Celebration of Birds in Art, will be held this Saturday, January 10 from 6-10pm. This local art show is part of the National Bird Day events, which raise awareness of the plight of birds in captivity and in the wild. This fundraiser for Born Free USA united with Animal Protection Institute will be held at Body Tribe located at 920 21st Street in Midtown Sacramento. Each year, millions of birds are captured from the wild or produced in captivity for commercial profit or human amusement, only to languish in conditions that fail to meet the instinctive behavioral and physical needs of these wild animals. The focus of National Bird Day is to raise
Thursday, Jan. 8 at 9 p.m. A new group, "Friendly Creatures," composed of Brian and Tatiana Latour and Alex Jenkins, who are members of Daisy Spot, and Ross Hammond will be performing at Old Ironsides. Hammond describes the band's sound as similar to Midnight Star, Lake Side or SOS Band with some Gil Scott Heron and Curtis Mayfield in the mix. Saturday, Jan. 10 during Second Saturday Kevin Corcoran and Ross Hammond will be doing a duet inside the 20th Street Art Gallery. Their music will be the perfect backdrop for those art perusers. Hammond describes the music they'll be playing as spacious and reminiscent of a sci-fi soundtrack. Old Ironsides is located at 1901 10th Street on the c
Sactown magazine, one of the newest regional magazines to our area just released their second anniversary issue. Have you ever attended a yoga class and looked around at the more skilled participants with their nimble bodies and perfect poses? Or maybe you are one of those yoga aficionados, starting your day doing the tree pose or the downward facing dog. The beauty of the body is truly revealed in the art of yoga. A glimpse in the mirror while doing a yoga pose is all the proof you need that body and mind coming together is truly art-worthy. The BOLD MARK Gallery has taken this concept on for their next exhibit, "Balanced Bodies, Centered Minds." During the months of December and January the gallery will feature both yoga sculpture and live yoga demonstrations. All of the artwork will draw from th
Alan Osborne is the owner of the Art Foundry, located on 1021 R Street. I sat down with Alan to find out what brought him to Sacramento and what kept him here. His expertise in bronze casting has brought renowned artists to Sacramento to work with him and castings that have been made in the Art Foundry can be seen throughout the city. What brought you to Sacramento? What actually brought me here was this building. When I had come in to look at the kiln that was for sale that used to be Earthworks and the woman was that had bought it from - the previous owner was downsizing so she was just going to move out. I went over to Fred David that same day and rented the space because I knew that
