Mavs shoot down Kings

The Dallas Mavericks began Saturday night's game with the ultimate mismatch in high-scoring 7-foot forward Dirk Nowitzki. Nowitzki scored what looked like an easy 39 points to befuddle the Kings during a 126-108 victory before a crowd of 15,247 at Arco Arena. The Kings rarely showed an ability to slow the Mavericks (53-27) offensively. Dallas' offense was orchestrated magnificently by maestro Jason Kidd, who earned his 105th career triple-double with 11 points, 10 rebounds and 13 assists. Dallas jumped out to a 17-point lead in the first quarter to seize control of the game. Only briefly during the second quarter did the Kings show any sign of being able to compete. Sacramento (25-55)

Kings Win and Tyreke Impresses

The fourth overall pick in the 2009 NBA draft has more than met expectations. Simply stated, when Tyreke Evans is on the court, the Kings play inspired basketball. The 116-94 victory over the Los Angeles Clippers simply added to the list of highlights that support his bid for Rookie of the Year honors. Tyreke's 28 points led all scorers, his 7 assists were second only to the Clippers' Baron Davis, and his team-leading 63% shooting from the field was actually the best on either bench. Many fans worried that a win would end the Kings' chances of being part of the draft lottery. However, today's NBA standings reveal that Sacramento remains among the contenders. Scenes from the game tell the s

The history of the NBA Rookie of the Year

At the end of every season, the NBA Rookie of the Year (ROY) Award is awarded to the best rookie of the season. Don Meineke was the first to win the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy in the 1952-53 season. Of the 56 ROYs, 21 basketball hall-of-famers, from Oscar Robertson to Michael Jordan, have emerged. More than 53 percent of retired ROYs were voted into the hall of fame. The next trophy could be coming to Sacramento as Kings guard Tyreke Evans tries to make history becoming the fourth rookie to average 20 points, five rebounds and five assists for a season. The first three were Robertson, Jordan and Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James. Portland Trail Blazers Television Analyst Mike Rice kn

Evans' shooting struggled coming off injury

After missing five games because of a concussion sustained March 19 against the Milwaukee Bucks, Tyreke Evans returned to the Sacramento Kings' starting lineup. The rookie guard has averaged 14.3 points, 6.3 rebounds, 9.7 assists and 1.7 steals per game in his three games since returning.  His scoring has taken a hit this week with his fifth single-digit scoring night of his rookie season on Saturday. On March 30 against the Indiana Pacers in Indianapolis, Evans had 17 points, seven rebounds, seven assists and four steals in the Kings' 102-95 loss.  Although the numbers say that he had a productive night, Evans had four of his seven turnovers and 13 of his 17 points were scored in the fo

Kings streaking comes to an end

The last time the Sacramento Kings faced the Los Angeles Clippers, they won. That game was the last win the Kings had before the losing streak began. The Kings snapped a five-game losing streak at Arco and an eight-game losing streak overall. The Sacramento Kings (25-54) beat the Los Angeles Clippers (27-52), 116-94. In the last contest between these two teams, Beno Udrih recorded his first triple-double the game after Tyreke Evans went down with his concussion in Milwaukee. Udrih played well tonight, but he didn’t have to do nearly as much as the last time these teams met. The Kings got the lead early, having a 33-27 lead after the first quarter. Evans had 10 points in the first, and

Fool's Gold

The Kings currently have a 25-54 record and had won their first game since March 21 last night at Arco. At first you would think this is a negative – which for the present it is, and nobody likes for their team to lose – but if you are looking at the future, this should be seen as a positive. Last month was a great time for Kings fans and basketball fans alike. We were able to watch the NCAA tournament. If you watched enough games, you would have been able to see that there are two great prospects coming out. The consensus is that John Wall of Kentucky and Evan Turner of Ohio State are two difference makers who will be leaving college and entering the 2010 draft. If you are unaware of

Different Night, Same Result

In one hand we have a team that has been in the playoffs the last twelve years and is getting ready for the playoffs as the regular season comes to an end. In the other hand we have a team that will not be in the playoffs and hasn’t been in the playoffs since 2005-2006. Until the 4th quarter you would not have been able to tell which team was which. The Sacramento Kings (24-54) hosted the San Antonio Spurs (48-29) on Bobby Jackson night at Arco Arena. It was a night that celebrated the career of a player who brought many memories to Sacramento and their fans. One of those memories is the 6th Man of the Year award, which is given to the best player off the bench in the NBA. Being tha

Spurs too hot for Kings

It was Bobby Jackson night at Arco Arena, but that celebration wasn't enough to distract Manu Ginobili and the San Antonio Spurs. Ginobili struggled through three quarters and then scored 11 points during a five-minute fourth-quarter spurt to lead the Spurs to a 95-86 victory before a crowd of 11,732. The defeat was Sacramento's eight straight and fifth consecutive at home. Once again, the Kings (24-54) played well until the game was up for grabs. The score was tied at 79-79 midway through the fourth quarter until the Spurs ran off 12 straight points to take control of the game. Ginobili, who entered the fourth quarter having made one of six field-goal attempts and with just five points

Kings players help renovate North Roseville R.E.C. Center

The Sacramento Kings had the day off Friday but instead of relaxing, players were hard at work refurbishing the North Roseville R.E.C. Center as part of the seventh annual Cesar Chavez Day of Volunteerism. It was sponsored by Maloof Sports & Entertainment in partnership with Wells Fargo. The wet and windy weather did not put a damper on anyone’s spirits, including the Kings and the kids at the center. The team's generosity showed inside the center and out in the form of the Kings Reading and Learning Center and new landscape players put in Friday. The basketball court also was renovated, for which the Kings donated official NBA-size rims. After the work was done, festivities kicked off

Kings show fight; get loss

For the basketball game's first 42 minutes, it was difficult to determine which team was playing for an improved Western Conference playoff seed and which had little more than pride as a reason to play. Ultimately, the true picture became clear Saturday night at Arco Arena when the Portland Trail Blazers outlasted the Kings, 98-87, before a crowd of 12,875.   The Trail Blazers scored 18 of the game's final 23 points during the final six minutes. Portland (47-30) is in eighth place in the playoff race with five games remaining. The Trail Blazers are just three games behind four teams (Dallas, Denver, Utah and Phoenix) tied for second place in the conference. Sacramento (24-53) lost its

Roy shows possible R.O.Y how it's done

After being on the road the last six games, the Sacramento Kings were able to be back in Arco, playing in an environment they are use to. Unfortunately the outcome was something they were used to on the road as well. The Sacramento Kings (24-53), who were trying to avoid a season high seventh consecutive loss, hosted the playoff-bound Portland Trail Blazers (47-30), who finished with a record of 11-2 in March. Many eyes were on R.O.Y candidate Tyreke Evans before the game, as he approaches the historic 20-5-5 mark. During the game the other Roy was the one who stood out. The 2006-07 Rookie of the Year, Brandon Roy, showed the value of a few years experience.  The Trail Blazers beating

Kings fall to T-Wolves, 108-99

No, you read it right. This is not an early April Fool’s gag. The Sacramento Kings did lose to the Minnesota Timberwolves in their fifth and final game of the road trip. The Timberwolves (14-60) snapped a 16-game losing streak against the Kings (24-51), who are on a streak of their own. The Kings have lost their last six games. The Kings followed up last night’s terrible third-quarter performance, where they scored 14, with a second quarter in which they only scored 13. Minnesota’s big men controlled the paint and ultimately the game. Minnesota shot 56 percent compared to the Kings’ 46 percent. The Timberwolves are known just as well for their shooting as they are for their winning. S

Mayor Johnson learns from trip to New York City

New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave Sacramento Mayor Kevin Johnson advice on what makes other cities successful at a meeting in New York City. Johnson also met with NBA Commissioner David Stern and Macy’s CEO Terry Lundgren. "You have to be responsive to the needs of your city," Johnson said that Bloomberg told him.  "You have to not only prioritize, but you have to be able to implement, execute and actualize whatever those happen to be." Johnson listed public safety, education, job creation and economic development as the city's top priorities. There are other issues that Johnson will be looking at. "Then he said that (there are) things that aren't your priorities that you shou

Evans Back, Kings Still Lack

Even with rookie guard Tyreke Evans back on the floor for the Sacramento Kings (24-51), they fell short to the Indiana Pacers (27-47), 102-95. Although the Kings started off hot, taking a 15 point lead in the first half, the pendulum swung towards the Pacers in the second. After being out 5 games with the concussion he suffered in Milwaukee, Tyreke Evans made it seem as though another triple-double was in the making. While only scoring four points in the first half, Evans grabbed 5 rebounds and dished out 8 dimes. Jason Thompson was able to produce coming off the bench, leading the team in scoring with 14 points as well as 4 rebounds. The second half was a different story. While the K

Tyreke Tuesdays: Evans could return today

After sitting out five games, Sacramento Kings rookie guard Tyreke Evans could play today against the Indiana Pacers. After sustaining a concussion when the Milwaukee Bucks' Ersan Ilyasova inadvertently hit him with an elbow, he sat out for three games before practicing last Thursday in Boston. When Evans complained of a headache at practice, the team ruled him out for the next two games. The Kings (24-50) have not done well since Evans' injury, compiling a 1-4 record since then. After beating the Los Angeles Clippers in L.A., the Kings lost at home against the Memphis Grizzlies the next night. The team left for a five-game road trip and lost to a then seven-win New Jersey Nets team, th

Kings fall to struggling Nets

The New Jersey Nets (8-63) looked at this game against the Sacramento Kings (24-48) as an opportune time to get another win. Something they have done little of this year. With Tyreke Evans out another game since he sustained his injury, the Nets had hoped a win could come a little easier at the Izod Center, and it did.The Nets who beat the Kings 93-79, brought a franchise-record 14-game losing streak at home to an end. The Nets are now 4-31 in their building. The Nets now need two more wins in their last eleven games to avoid Philadelphia’s record of 9 total wins in the ’72-’73 season. Brook Lopez took advantage of the Kings' poor interior defense scoring 22 points, grabbing 12 boards an
