Sacramento Press holds Sports Writing workshop

Every month The Sacramento Press holds a workshop for its writers and readers to attend. Last night, Sac Press held a sports writing workshop in which sports writers Jimmy Spencer and Zach Harper led. The 22 people in attendance asked questions and listened to the message that both writers shared pertaining to sports journalism. Although they both are in the sports journalism arena, the way in which they made a name for themselves was very different. Spencer earned a degree in journalism at California State University, Sacramento, in 2005. Spencer started his journalism career writing for campus newspaper, The State Hornet, and would later find himself working for The Sacramento Bee. He

Kings tweak uniforms

Revealed by the NBA on Twitpic, the Sacramento Kings's uniforms will have a different look from the previous two seasons. The picture shows Kings rookie big man DeMarcus Cousins wearing a Kings road uniform with the numbers centered and a different neck style from last season. The new look slightly resembles the uniforms the Kings wore from 1995-2002, while keeping the same letter scheme that was used on the previous uniform. According to Akis Yerocostas from Sactown Royalty, who received an e-mail in April from Kings New Media Manager Andrew Nicholson, the Kings will be participating in a Hardwood Classics night in the upcoming season and the team is working on creating an alternate j

A close look at the Sacramento Kings 2010-2011 schedule

For the past five seasons the Sacramento Kings have opened up the regular season on the road facing teams that were above .500 the previous year. This year they will again start on a three-game road-trip in late October, but won’t be playing the likes of Dallas, Houston or Orlando. Instead, the Kings will travel to Minnesota, New Jersey and Cleveland – two of those teams are young, and the other team is in a downward spiral looking to stay afloat in the east after the departure of its superstar. Besides their games against the defending champion Los Angeles Lakers and a game at Phoenix, the Kings have a pretty soft schedule to start the year. With only one back-to-back game in November,

Breaking down the new Kings roster

What a difference one off-season makes. In a span of three months, the Sacramento Kings lost six players from last season’s roster and gained seven new players. Kings President of Basketball Operations Geoff Petrie and the rest of the staff were busy this summer  what the team’s transactions looks like: Spencer Hawes and Andres Nocioni traded to the Philadelphia 76ers for Samuel Dalembert. Drafted DeMarcus Cousins and Hassan Whiteside. Signed undrafted guard Donald Sloan. Signed-and-traded Jon Brockman to the Milwaukee Bucks for Darnell Jackson and a 2011 second

Athletes > Cancer

Celebrity athletes are just like you and I. Well, maybe not just like you and I, but similar. They are like richer, better-dressed, more-fit versions of us (Or, in Scot Pollard's case, just richer). The similarities were on display at the second annual Athletes vs. Cancer golf tournament at the Woodcreek Golf Club, hosted by Matt Barnes on Saturday. Barnes founded the AVC to honor his mother, who passed away from cancer in 2007. Their mission is to "support research, create awareness, provide screening opportunities and deliver support to cancer patients." The tournament featured many athletes with local ties, among them former Kings Chris Webber, Scot Pollard, Bobby Jackson, Doug Chri

Kings sign Wright, Jeter

The team also signed Eugene "Pooh" Jeter (pronounced Jetter), who played with the Kings summer league team in 2007. “Antoine Wright and Pooh Jeter are two solid players at their respective positions who will add to our roster’s depth,” Kings’ Vice President of Basketball Operations Wayne Cooper said. “Wright has five years of NBA experience under

Sacramento Kings make minor additions

Early Friday the Sacramento Kings signed free agent guards Pooh Jeter and Antoine Wright. Terms of the contracts were not disclosed but Kings’ Vice President of Basketball Operations and General Manager Wayne Cooper spoke about the most recent additions. “Antoine Wright and Pooh Jeter are two solid players at their respective positions who will add to our roster’s depth,” said Cooper. “Wright has five years of NBA experience under his belt and Jeter is coming off a great summer league showing as he played for Cleveland’s team in Las Vegas.” Jeter may be a familiar name to some Kings fans as he played for the Kings Summer League in 2007 but was unable to find a spot on the roster. Break out your plaid and visors for a day on the golf course with Sacramento native and current NBA player Matt Barnes. Barnes and other high-profile sports figures are in town for the second annual Athletes vs Cancer Foundation’s Celebrity Golf Invitational. The former Sacramento King began the foundation, according to his website, in 2009 after Barnes lost his mother Ann to cancer in 2007. Athletes vs Cancer spreads awareness and provides screening opportunities. “Athletes have a positive influence,” Barnes said. When athletes voice their support, it brings more light to serious situations he said. The Foundation hopes to raise $100,000 at this year's event. All proceeds from the tour

Kings-Bucks trade in the works

First reported by Dave "Softy" Mahler of Sports Radio 950 KJR-Seattle, the Kings are on the verge of trading undersized power forward Jon Brockman to the Milwaukee Bucks. According to Yahoo! Sports' Adrian Wojnarowski, the Kings would receive forward Darnell Jackson and a future second-round pick in return. Brockman, 23, was extended a qualifying offer by the Kings, but he never signed the offer, missing all of the Kings' summer league action in Las Vegas. He was drafted by the Portland Trail Blazers No. 36 overall and traded with Sergio Rodriguez to Sacramento. Brockman was one of the NBA's most efficient rebounders last season. At six-feet-seven-inches he grabbed an average of 4.1 re

Kings prepare for Vegas Summer League

Now that the LeBron talk has settled, and we know he isn’t coming to Sacramento, we can put all our attention and focus on the young group of guys we’ve got going into next year. The Kings’ draft selections, DeMarcus Cousins and Hassan Whiteside, stepped on the court Friday at the Kings practice facility to show the coaching staff what they have. Although Cousins and Whiteside showed in college that they’ve got the athleticism and talent to be drafted by an NBA team, many of the players at the practice facility are trying to prove their worth and find a spot on the Kings' roster. Even though it isn’t mandatory that they play in the Summer League, Omri Casspi and Donte Greene joined the r

Arena plan moving forward

A few more details have emerged as part of an arena and land-swap plan currently being considered by city and state fair officials. A plan laid out by developers Gerry Kamilos and David Taylor calls for mixed-use private development of city-owned railyards land and the current state fairgrounds site. That development would help finance a $400 million sports and entertainment complex downtown and new fairgrounds in North Natomas, according to documents the city released late last week. The "Sacramento Convergence" development team, which includes Macquarie Capital, would invest $600 to $700 million in private equity and debt in the project. The developers also propose other funding mechan

Kings draft DeMarcus Cousins

The Sacramento Kings selected Kentucky's DeMarcus Cousins with the fifth pick in the 2010 NBA Draft. Kings work out final prospects

As the 2010 NBA Draft approaches the Kings will have some decisions to make regarding who they will take with the fifth and the 33rd picks. The team hosted Duke's Jon Scheyer, Notre Dame's Luke Harangody, USC's Mike Gerrity, Tulsa's Ben Uzoh, Arkansas' Michael Washington and Azusa Pacific's Dominique Johnson in this morning's workout. All of them were college seniors. Scheyer played for this year's Duke team that won the 2010 NCAA National Championship. Last season he averaged 18.2 points, 3.6 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game. He missed his first workout with the Kings because he had strep throat but the 6-foot-six-inch 180 pound guard says that after his workout with the Phoenix Suns

Kings invite six more prospects to pre-draft workout

The Sacramento Kings brought in six more prospects for a pre-draft workout at their practice facility Friday. University of Oklahoma's Tiny Gallon, University of Connecticut's Stanley Robinson, Arizona's Nic Wise, Baylor's Tweety Carter, Boise State's Ike Okoye, and St. Mary's Omar Samhan were all in attendance to show the Kings' coaches and scouts what they could bring to the team. Of the six prospects in attendance, Robinson is projected to be drafted the highest: somewhere in the middle of the first round. Robinson averaged 14.5 points, 7.6 rebounds, and 1 assist per game during his senior year at Connecticut. He largely played small forward during his tenure there, but feels he can

Kings trade Nocioni, Hawes for Sixers' Dalembert

The Sacramento Kings have traded disgruntled forward Andres Nocioni and third-year center Spencer Hawes to the Philadelphia 76ers for center Samuel Dalembert. Dalembert, an athletic center known for his rebounding and shot blocking, made NBA headlines this season after his native country of Haiti was struck by a catastrophic 7.0 magnitude earthquake in January. He briefly left the Sixers to visit the country and donated $100,000 to UNICEF to aid relief efforts but he played all 82 games of the season as well as the previous three seasons There were only two games he didn't start in over 328 games the past four seasons. Those games were the 2009-10 season. Dalembert averaged 8.1 points,
