Q. I love dining with my Black Russian Terrier, Eli at the numerous dog friendly restaurant patios in Sacramento. Why do some restaurants allow dogs on their outdoor patios and some don’t? Julie S. A. More and more, restaurants are recognizing the buying power of dog owners. So restaurants are welcoming pet diners onto their patios some even making special treats and providing bowls of water for their canine customers. With the exception of recognized service animals, Health & Safety Code (H&SC) Section 114259.5 prohibits live animals in food facilities. A food facility is defined as an operation that stores, prepares packages, serves, vends or otherwise provides food for human consump

Here at the Sacramento SPCA we have lots of dogs, cats and rabbits... but did you know that we have OTHER great pets here too?? Check out Featherworth: A very lively and spunky rooster who is among several that we have here at the shelter right now. Roosters are only $5 each right now, and they make great outdoor pets! Here are a couple of tips to help keep your rooster happy and healthy: •Giving them a wide and open area to live and walk about, allowing them plenty of space to "roost". •At night, keep them in a simple but comfortable structure or bed, allowing them space to crow at dawn. •Try to keep their sleeping space dark. Roosters usually crow at the first sight of light, which cou

Larry Ottoviani officially lost his job after seven years with the 7Up Bottling Company for doing the one thing that helped him counteract the anxiety in his personal life. That one thing was feeding hungry cats. “I love cats and don’t like to see them go hungry,” Ottoviania said. “When I’m feeding cats I can forget everything else for awhile.” Ottoviani had been warned several times by his supervisor not to feed the cats. The official termination notice dated Jan. 4, 2012, stated that Ottoviani violated his “last chance agreement not to feed the cats on company time and/or company property.” While Ottoviani does not deny feeding cats, he denied doing so during company time and on comp

She is young (only a year and nine-months-old) and is very intelligent-so she has a lot of potential for training and positive reinforcement! Zoie is a really playful and loving girl, who's 'happy place' is being outside playing fetch. She knows her and name and sits on command...already a great little buddy in the making! Zoie would do best in an active home with an experienced owner who is often home to run, play and explore the world with her. She should do fine with older children at home but no cats please! Other dogs should be OK. She's looking for a place to call home, come pay her a visi

Such a great duo! Samuel and Jackson are both eight-year-old black Labrador mixes looking for a new family to curl up to. While they are not a mandatory dual adoption, it is recommended that they stay together, because they are the BEST of friends! They both enjoy long walks and playing ball, while also laying around and hanging out with their people friends. Both dogs would prefer dog-friendly homes that have older children. Their ages qualify them both for our ‘Seniors for Seniors Adoption Program’ which waives the adoption fees to an adopter over the age of sixty. Do Samuel and Jackson seem like a great match for your family and lifestyle? Check them out online at www.sspca.org.
With the New Year just around the corner, resolutions weigh heavy on the minds of most people. At the Sacramento SPCA, we figured that these same concerns might be occupying the thoughts of some of our animal friends. So, we took a random poll of the more than 400 dogs, cats, rabbits and even a couple of rats at our shelter and this is what we discovered: • Four out of five dogs feel the need to exercise more • Walking was the number one exercise of choice, with fetch coming in as a close second • 65% of all animals surveyed are interested in pursuing healthier eating habits • A whopping 96% of the cats surveyed vowed to get more sleep in the coming year • 78% of dogs were determined to l
