Looking for a special way to turn your Valentine’s Day into a memorable holiday? There are myriad options out there, but here are a few highlights for the upcoming weekend:

For the sporty sort (Sat 7am): Rise & shine Saturday morning and get your jog on at Race for Justice: 9th Annual Valentine Run, which begins from Country Club Plaza. This fun run has a kids' race component, plus a costume contest for dogs & humans alike!

For the musical type (Sat 10pm): Make your way to Vega's Nightclub & Sports Bar this Saturday night for Valentine's Heartbreak Hotel. Not only you will you enjoy live music by Barrel Fever and the Fortunite Few, you'll also get to see a live burlesque show and participate in a free pin-up photoshoot by Bad Bones Photography.

For the animal lover (Sun 10am-4pm): Head over to the Sacramento Zoo Sunday afternoon for I Heart Sacramento Zoo and watch the animals receive their Valentines, plus participate in informative talks and peruse activity tables.

For the anti-Valentine (Sun 7:30pm): Movies on a Big Screen notes that around Valentine's Day, they like to screen "some kind of movie that might make your date a little uncomfortable with your idea of romance." This Sunday evening, they feature the 1923 silent classic The Hunchback of Notre Dame, which, they claim, is a romantic movie (if you remove all of the violence, murder, mayhem, and obsession, that is).

A Sacramento nonprofit group is willing to sing your loved one’s praises on Valentine’s Day.

Quartets from the Sacramento Valley Chorus will be touring the greater Sacramento area, dropping in on the unsuspecting to deliver singing valentines.

“People love it,” said Bonnie Flint of the Sacramento Valley Chorus. “You have everything from total elation to absolute embarrassment. You have people laugh, you have people cry. It’s usually a very positive response.”

Nine quartets will be singing four-part barbershop harmony a capella as they traipse about town. Flint said favorite spots include offices, schools and hospitals.

Each singing valentine will include two songs. Song options are “Let Me Call You Sweetheart,” “Heart of My Heart,” “There I Said it Again” and “Cuddle up a Little Closer.”

In addition to the songs, each recipient will receive a silk rose, a card and a heart-shaped box of candy.

Having a singing valentine delivered to your amour will set you back $40, but Flint said the money all goes to the Sacramento Valley Chorus, which is a nonprofit organization under the umbrella of larger Sweet Adelines International, based in Tulsa, Okla.

“It’s a lot of fun helping people feel good,” said Mary Surkala of the Sacramento Valley Chorus. “The most fun is surprising people and seeing how excited they get and how happy they get knowing that this person has sent them a singing valentine.”

The group has been doing singing valentines for about seven years, and the number of visits has ranged from 40 to about 100.

The group has a number of events, including an annual fundraiser in October and Christmas caroling.

“It depends on the day of the week,” Flint said. “Weekdays are usually better because people can have them sent to offices.”

Flint said the quartets are made up of the organization’s approximately 70 members, all of whom are women.

“We’re an audition-only group,” she added. “(Women who want to join) have to learn a song by memory – notes and words – and sing it accurately and hold their part with three other voices singing.”

Each quartet is made up of a lead, a tenor, a bassist and a baritone, Flint said.

For the holiday, each woman will wear a uniform of black pants and shirt with a magenta vest, Flint said.

“When people hear us sing, they very often order a valentine right on the spot,” she said.
