"We're not terrorists, we're photographers!"

The headline describes the last part of a fun photo shoot. Early last night, my friend Ed Fogle and I took a photographic tour of the Capitol Mall, just shooting whatever caught our eyeballs. We strolled along, sharing photo tips and ideas as we took photos. We timed it so we would catch the beginning of sunset on our trek headed west. At the end of our fun evening as we were shooting a building, a security guard came out to tell us we can't shoot that building. He basically called us terrorists - patriotic Ed and US Navy Veteran Kati. Ed diplomatically explained photographer's rights after a verbal go-around with the young security guard. He even admitted he was bored, so we became 's

La Valentia; Affordable Housing with an Eco-Conscience

Back in December 2010 Meea Kang, a principal at Domus Development said to Brandon Darnell, Sacramento Press reporter,  “We’re here to bring, I think, the most contemporary, most cutting-edge design that we could bring to one of the oldest residential neighborhoods of Sacramento.” Nearing completion of the La Valentina in the Alkali Flat area, it appears San Francisco-based company in charge of the project has accomplished what it set out to do. The La Valentia is a definite upgrade at the corner of 12th and D streets and is adjacent to the La Valentina Light Rail Station. According to the Domus Management website, Sacramento's La Valentia's 81 affordable units include studios, 1, 2 & 3

U.S. Bank leaves UC Davis: What's next?

Details of what the future will bring for U.S. Bank on the UC Davis campus are still hazy after the bank announced the branch’s closure in the wake of the Occupy UC Davis movement, but a school official said he is hopeful that the partnership can be restored. “The biggest impact if this relationship can’t be salvaged is that student programs won’t earn the money they were slated to earn,” university spokesman Barry Schiller said Tuesday, adding that the best-hope figures put those earnings at $3 million over 10 years. “In the last year, I believe that it was something on the order of about $167,000 for student programs,” Schiller said. The money was channeled to the student programs as

Foggy Soggy Days of Fall

The beauty of fog is that it creates a haze of the things we normally see sharp, clear and with strong colors. No blue sky or the sun's rays beaming upon us. Colors are muted. Our world is more quiet thanks to water droplets in the air. Building tops seem to disappear into the sky. That describes today's blanket of fog over Sacramento:

Sacramento|Yolo Mutual Housing Association recently raised nearly $65,000 at their second Building Up Breakfast in one-time donations and multi-year pledges. Capitol Mall Almost Aglow

I arrived at Capitol Mall around 5:30 this evening and had to really make sure I wasn't missing the 22,450 LED lights that were to be on the towers between 1st and 7th Streets. US Bank was the most photogenic so I captured scenes there, near and far. I'm guessing perhaps there were technical difficulties with getting the other buildings lit. All was not lost! Here's what I saw: The front of US Bank is very eye-catching. To the left of the Christmas tree is a reflection of the art outside. Mayor Kevin Johnson introduces "Rules of the Game" for new arena

At a news conference Thursday, Mayor Kevin Johnson introduced his "Rules of the Game" plan to build an arena and entertainment complex in Sacramento. It was held on the 25th floor of the US Bank building downtown, featuring panoramic views of the skyline with Cal Expo and the Sacramento Railyards in the background. Johnson's "rules" include coming up with a plan that doesn't depend on taxes, making sure the city is not a "stalking horse" for a deal elsewhere and utilizing experienced community members. He also announced that a task force will be established and that there will be an open call for proposals, with guidelines coming in the next few days. "I think it's time to reinvigorate a
