New food truck to feature California-style tacos from owners of Krush Burger

This is shaping up to be a good year for Krush Burger owner Davin Vculek: His original food truck is the basis for a traditional restaurant set to open at the end of the year, Sacramento will soon vote on a less restrictive food truck ordinance, and he is a few weeks away from rolling out his next food truck – doing with tacos what Krush Burger did with burgers. “It’s Crave: Modern American Tacos,” Vculek said Wednesday. “We’re going to have a couple of fish options, a shrimp option, a really good pulled pork taco, chicken and possibly a steak taco.” The truck is in the final stages of construction, but it is scheduled to be at the Sept. 29 SactoMoFo Trucktoberfest in West Sacramento. Tako Korean BBQ coming to historic gas station on Alhambra

The old gas station on the corner of Alhambra Boulevard and T Street is scheduled to open next week as Tako Korean BBQ, selling tacos and burritos with a Korean flair. “It’s really big in L.A., and we wanted to bring the concept up here,” co-owner Alex Won said Monday. “We’ll have beef, pork and chicken with a Korean sauce and slaw on tortillas.” The concept is similar to GoGi’s Korean Barbecue, which opened inside Cafeteria 15L last year. Details are still being finalized, but the tacos and burritos will likely be sold in combo plates with rice, and salads will be available. Won said diners should expect to pay between $6 and $8 for lunch. Also planned for the space is a selection of

Law enforcement, firefighters box for charity

Law enforcement and correctional officers, military personnel and a firefighter went toe to toe in the boxing ring Saturday night, raising money for charity in the Battle of the Badges Fight Series: Road to the Championship. Held in the intimate courtyard setting of Liquid Nightclub in Citrus Heights, the well-attended event benefitted charities including the Armed Forces Foundation, Firefighters Burn Institute and Sacramento Sheriff's Toy Project. Battle of the Badges Fight Series events are a lead-up to the title fight at Battle of the Badges VIII. Last year's Battle of the Badges VII was held in August at Memorial Auditorium. All bouts had a three-round limit, and on the card Saturd

Fairytale Town's Moonlight Costume Ball: Arabian Nights

A harem of attractive girls with their midriffs showing and about five men — two wearing eyeliner, one dressed as a taco and the rest disguised as Aladdin — showed up to Fairytale Town’s Moonlight Costume Ball: Arabian Nights. Fairytale Town is a park usually enjoyed by kids. It’s a place where they are able to run around, pet farm animals in paddocks and play on fairytale-themed objects like oversized cement blocks of Swiss cheese and slides shaped like shoes, but, on Saturday night, only those aged 18 and over were allowed entrance. Alcohol was served at two different tents. There were food trucks, a psychic, belly dancers and a raffle. Sacramento band Hero’s Last Mission performed,

Fresh from Jalisco: New Midtown taqueria

A pair of Roseville taquerias called Jalisco Fresh Mexican Grill have become so popular that their owner has opened another in Midtown Sacramento. Fans were driving from as far away as the foothill towns of Nevada City, El Dorado Hills and Auburn to get to the family-owned restaurants in Roseville. Some pleaded with owner Ramon Arias to launch his next taqueria in Auburn so they wouldn't have to travel so far for the tacos, burritos and fajitas. "They said, 'You should open another taco house,' " Arias, 42, said Monday. "We didn't think there were enough people over there (in Auburn) to keep our business open. I thought Sacramento was better." Arias and his family opened the third Jalis

Immaculate Taco

The taco is the world’s most perfect food. Fact. Personally, I think the taco is the single most perfect thing, food or otherwise, in the universe. I'm willing to bend on this stance, but I don't expect to. Feel free to nominate something else, but it has to be a physical thing. I will not accept "love" or "a summer's day" as viable submissions. Some have called me taco-obsessed. And, if getting 50 tacos mailed to me in New York from California on dry ice for my first collegiate care package makes me obsessed, then, well, maybe. If picking up a duffel bag full of tacos and burritos during a 45 minute layover at SFO is wrong, I don't want to be right. The point is, since I discovered th

GoGi's bring street tacos downtown

Mexican Tacos with Korean flair are coming to the corner of 15th and L streets as GoGi’s Korean BBQ is opening Tuesday in the former “Park To Go” kiosk. “GoGi’s tacos is a cross between Mexican and Korean taco stands,” said Executive Chef Christian Palmos. “Since there are no taco trucks allowed downtown, it’s a great location.” Palmos said many of the restaurants in the area are more upscale, and he thinks the takeaway food – with patio seating available – will be a good fit. “It’s great food at a great price, and we’re giving the first taco for free opening week,” he said. Tacos – made with Korean barbecue beef short rib, spicy pork, chicken or tofu – will cost $2, and burritos will

Suburban Cowboy

For the last week, I've been living the life of Riley. Jess' aunt and uncle took her little cousins on vacation to Hawaii.  We've been housesitting their place in Land Park. Riley lives in a three-bedroom house in the suburbs, he's got a cat and a dog.  And this week, so do I.                 I thought I'd share with you some of the people and places that I've experienced during my week as a Sacramento suburbanite. A Suburban Cowboy, if you will.  While I'm not ready to trade in my 'Vette for a minivan a la Steve Sanders, BH 90210, Episode 7, Season 10 (a part of me died that day. Also, no one's gonna mistake my 1990 Honda Accord for a Corvette with plates that read I8A-4RE), I found th

First they came for the taco trucks, and I did not speak out. . . .

I had meant for my second article to be an ode to my new neighborhood, Midtown.  In my brief time here, I have found a lot to love about the area around my 1 bedroom on 18th and G.  I would love to wax poetic about the virtues of having two dope, locally owned, coffee shops within a five minute walk (Butch and Nellies, Old Soul at the Weatherford).  There's nothing I'd rather do than tell you about the lovely dining experience I had my first night here at Michealangelos, a little Italian Trattoria a stones throw from my front porch (Thanks Sara Jean!).  If I could, I'd spend an entire paragraph extolling the virtues of "Streets of London", a British style pub that has "football" on the

Mark Miller visits Sacramento to promote cookbook

Mark Miller admitted being flattered when Life magazine named him one of America's most influential chefs of the 1980s alongside Alice Waters, Wolfgang Puck and Paul Prudhomme. But he isn't comfortable with his celebrity chef status. Miller is most famous for popularizing the southwest cooking style worldwide. He's written 10 cookbooks altogether, and seven of them deal with southwestern-style cooking, including The Great Chile Book and Coyote Café, named after his famous Santa Fe café. However, what Miller really wants is to inspire people to cook. "Sometimes we watch too much television, and we are preordaining what the [culinary] experience is," Miller said. "People should really de
