Yoga showroom Lulelemon opens

The primarily yoga-focused Lululemon Athletica clothing company opened a showroom  Friday in the MARRS Building at 20th and J streets, a space vacated by Newsbeat last year. Showroom Manager Victoria Tanforan, 24, said that the showroom is designed to be a temporary space with a retail area to introduce Lululemon’s attire to the local market. If it garners enough interest, she said, a full retail store could be forthcoming. “We’re a company that specializes in high-quality yoga and running wear,” Tanforan said. “We are all about becoming a part of the community we’re in, and we have free classes every week.” The Lululemon showroom will work with 10 athletic ambassadors, which range from

Gorilla Knitting Crew covers the city with yarn

Across Sacramento, knitted blankets and beanies are turning up in trees, on bike racks and on statues. A blanket made out of yarn covered a bike rack in front of The Golden Bear. Fire hydrants downtown were covered with beanies. These seemingly random acts of craftsmanship are the calling card of The Gorilla Knitting Crew. Candice Foster, known as Can, and her husband, Adam Foster, started the Gorilla Knitting Crew last June with their kids Bella, 13, Nieyah, 7, AJ, 6, and Lukas, 4, when Can suddenly found herself unemployed. Can said she heard people were “knit bombing,” putting knitting in trees around the world, so the family started hanging knitting projects around Sacramento. Th

Farewell to news

Today marks the end of my 135-week journey with The Sacramento Press. Here is my first and last editorial. When I applied to be an intern for an online newspaper in September 2009, I never imagined it would lead me to being the editor-in-chief of anything. In high school, I dreamed of being a writer for a newspaper or a magazine. In my college entrance exam, I wrote about how I wanted to make a difference through my writing. I wanted my voice to be heard. I still remember when I interviewed for The Sacramento Press internship. I sat across from Ben Ilfeld and told him my goals of moving to New York to work for a major magazine. I told him I wanted to go to journalism school. Ben looked

McDonald’s appeals city’s denial of drive-thru

McDonald’s USA on Monday appealed Sacramento Planning Commission’s decision to deny a drive-through restaurant on the corner of Stockton Boulevard and 2nd Avenue in the city’s Oak Park neighborhood. The action sends the issue to City Council for a final vote and extends a nearly two-year debate about the project and its placement in an urban corridor adjacent to medical offices, hospitals and an obesity clinic on Stockton Boulevard and single-family homes on 2nd Avenue. Senior Planner Lindsey Alagozian said city staff is reviewing the appeal, which presents McDonald’s arguments against the city’s decision. McDonald’s representatives did not respond to questions about the appeal. The Pla

Photos: Plaza Café Lounge now open

Plaza Café Coffee Lounge opened April 2 after numerous construction delays. The coffee bar at Seventh and K streets fronts St. Rose of Lima Park, and co-owner Omar Tarin said Friday that it is already attracting regulars. “We have a modern lounge feel, and we have two TVs playing news at all times, and people are already telling us how good our paninis are,” Tarin said. Cups of coffee, with beans supplied by Vaneli’s, run $1.50, and panini sandwiches average about $7. A range of desserts, fresh fruits, salads and smoothies is also available. Free wireless Internet access is provided as well as many electrical outlets. The 1,600-square-foot interior seats about 45, and an 800-square-foo

Op/Ed: Use arena funds for schools

Like the rest of Sacramento, I have followed the twists and turns of the city’s downtown arena saga with great interest. The Kings have been a valuable and generous partner of the Sacramento City Unified School District. I have attended many of their terrific “Get Fit” events at our schools and come away impressed by the team’s sincere commitment to fighting childhood obesity. Annually, they honor our teachers with touching half-time tributes. And on numerous occasions players and staff have addressed our students to extol the value of an education. Losing the Kings would be a blow to our community. But with adversity comes opportunities. What if the $185 million to $245 million to be r

"Little Shop of Horrors" Great Show-Great Cast-Great Fun STC Mainstage

Images by Kelly Christofferson   New exclusive SacPress images by Barry Wisdom The Sacramento Theatre Company is ending its 2011-2012 season of “Mystery, Music, and Mayhem" with the return of a huge hit for STC 20-some odd years ago, the highly successful Howard Ashman-Alan Menken collaboration, “Little Shop of Horrors." It won’t be a mystery if this new STC production turns out to be its own smash hit. As for the music, Ashman’s lyrics and Menken’s music are equally infectious and the cast and band gave a wonderful performance. The two went on to do several successful and award-winning collaborations with Disney. There is lots of mayhem, mostly of the human-eating plant variety. Ashman

Hyper Crush plays Ace of Spades

Ace of Spades hosted the tour finale of the Glow Sticks for Breakfast Tour Sunday night, featuring performances by Hyper Crush, Benzi, Silver Medallion and Sacramento band Playboy School. Fall Out Boy bassist Pete Wentz's DJ project with Spencer Peterson, Black Cards, was also scheduled to perform, but the duo had to pull out a few days before the show due to an ankle injury. Playboy School kicked things off in the early slot with a lukewarm set as people trickled in. Benzi livened the mood up with an electronic/Top 40 set that had a few guys raging, and a while later Silver Medallion came out and grabbed the mic, adding some organic energy to the stage as he ran around, whipping his lo

Mat Kearney to play Colonial Theatre on April 10th

Critically acclaimed Nashville-based singer/songwriter Mat Kearney has added West Coast dates to his current tour and will make a stop in Sacramento on April 10 at the Colonial Theatre in Oak Park. Kearney's current tour has included several sold-out shows at places including the Mayan Theatre in Los Angeles, House of Blues in Boston and Ogden Theatre in Denver. The second single from the album, "Ships in the Night," was recently performed on "The Tonight Show with Jay Leno" and is the featured music in

2012 Chinese New Year Festival

The Chinese New Year Culture Association celebrated the Year of the Dragon at the Scottish Rite Masonic Center Saturday. As with many other ethnic and cultural events that take place in Sacramento this Chinese New Year celebration’s popularity has grown since its start 15 years ago. The CNYCA might have to look for a larger venue to accommodate visitors to the next event, since the parking lot was full by the time the event was scheduled to start at noon. The CNYCA put together a wonderful cultural event package with the help of several Chinese community organizations and individuals. They host the event to introduce and promote Chinese culture to the general public and other ethnic g

Trash Film Orgy On the Y fundraiser

Trash Film Orgy Productions (TFO) put together an enjoyable evening of games, dance, live music and a special showing of “Monster from Bikini Beach.” The event was held on Friday night as a fundraiser for TFO’s next full length film. The event, hosted by Sacramento’s On the Y began with a game of Bikini Beach Bingo. The bingo game was played during the showing of “Monster from Bikini Beach” and fans were given simple instructions on how to play the game; every time a bingo item appeared on the screen players checked off the item and took a drink. As soon as they had a bingo combo they could choose a prize. The game continued but then the game changed to bingo blackout. Some items on th

MUTEMATH at Ace of Spades

"We've got quite a set here," announced MUTEMATH vocalist and keyboardist Paul Meany. "We've been around for eight years. That's a lot of songs to choose from!" Quite a set it was. Making an unconventional entrance from the back of the venue with instruments and Christmas lights in tow, the New Orleans electro-alt rock band went on to do a little face-melting for the packed house at Ace of Spades Wednesday night. The Grammy-nominated four-piece put on a sonic and visual spectacle, covering a massive setlist over more than two hours and sampling a bit from all their studio albums and EPs, including all 13 songs from their latest release, 2011's "Odd Soul." Aided by tons of frantic, colo
