Kings come from behind to win home opener

We are only four games into an 82-game season, but one thing we can take away from this year’s Sacramento Kings is that they do not quit.  On Monday night the Kings played their home opener in front of a packed Arco Arena, and for the third consecutive game, the Kings fell behind by double-digits before mounting a late rally to set up a dramatic finish.  The Kings held on to defeat the Toronto Raptors 111-108 and improve their record to 3-1 with an early test coming on Wednesday when they host the champion Los Angeles Lakers. The opening-night festivities began with the Maloof family presenting Tyreke Evans his Rookie of the Year trophy at center court.  Last season Evans became just t

Tyreke Evans named NBA Rookie of the Year!

Tyreke Evans of the Sacramento Kings is the recipient of the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy as the 2009-10 T-Mobile NBA Rookie of the Year. I attended the press conference and spoke with the Kings General Manager Geoff Petrie, Tyreke's Brother - Doc Evans, Tyreke Evans, Kings owners - Joe & Gavin Maloof, and Tyreke's childhood friend - Duane Davis. Joe & Gavin Maloof also said President Obama suggested they pick Tyreke during the draft and plan on getting more advice from Obama for the next draft! :) Tyreke was the fourth pick in the NBA Draft 2009 and averaged 20.1 points, as well as team-high 5.8 assists and 5.3 rebounds. Tyreke joins Oscar Robertson, Michael Jordan, and LeBron James as the on

Evans closes Rookie of the Year race with history

Tyreke Evans made history as a Sacramento King on April 12. Tyreke Evans had 24 points against the Houston Rockets to secure his spot in the history books as one of four rookies in NBA history to average at least 20 points, 5 rebounds and 5 assists. With this, Tyreke joins a group of elites by the names of LeBron James, Michael Jordan, and Oscar Robertson. That’s pretty good company to have in the record books. Along with being on that list, he is also on another list. There were only three players in the NBA that were part of this 20-5-5 club this season. The only three people this year to do it are LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, and now Tyreke Evans. That’s a pretty elite list to be on, es

The history of the NBA Rookie of the Year

At the end of every season, the NBA Rookie of the Year (ROY) Award is awarded to the best rookie of the season. Don Meineke was the first to win the Eddie Gottlieb Trophy in the 1952-53 season. Of the 56 ROYs, 21 basketball hall-of-famers, from Oscar Robertson to Michael Jordan, have emerged. More than 53 percent of retired ROYs were voted into the hall of fame. The next trophy could be coming to Sacramento as Kings guard Tyreke Evans tries to make history becoming the fourth rookie to average 20 points, five rebounds and five assists for a season. The first three were Robertson, Jordan and Cleveland Cavaliers forward LeBron James. Portland Trail Blazers Television Analyst Mike Rice kn

King for a Day. . .

"How do you feel about the Sacramento Kings?"       When I was first asked this question a few weeks ago, my initial response was "luke warm".  I am from the Bay Area, and, besides a youthful dalliance with the Detroit Pistons (spurred on by an Adrian Dantley signed basketball I received for Christmas, 1987), a lifelong Warriors fan.  Now, you might think I would hate the Kings, seeing as they and the Warriors are geographic rivals and all, but you'd be mistaken.  I don't hate the Kings.       I hate the Lakers. I hate them intensely.  And, as the proverb goes, "The enemy of my enemy is my friend".   For the last 20 years, the Warriors have been mostly impotent, unable to present any

Mayor Kevin Johnson Campaigns for Tyreke.

The night of March 10 may be the night that helps skyrocket Sacramento Kings rookie guard Tyreke Evans to the Rookie of the Year (ROY) award for this season, but it will not be determined just by “’Reke’s” abilities and skills on the court. The support and excitement of all Sacramentans and Kings fans for Evans could have a large part in helping the former Memphis Tiger possibly win the award. With a banner that read, “RALLY FOR ’REKE, ROOKIE OF THE YEAR” behind him and local leaders, regional leaders, Slamson and Kings dancers alongside him, Mayor Kevin Johnson announced at a press conference Tuesday morning that March 10 would be ‘Rally for RekeROY Night’ at Arco Arena. The Kings will

Tyreke Tuesdays: Evans has big weekend ahead

Despite the fact that the Sacramento Kings (16-34) are slumping, its rookie guard, Tyreke Evans, has a bright weekend ahead of him during the 2010 NBA All-Star Weekend in Dallas, Texas. Evans, along with fellow rookie teammate Omri Casspi, will represent the Kings on the Rookies team in the T-Mobile Rookie Challenge & Youth Jam at the American Airlines Arena, home of the Dallas Mavericks. The Rookie Challenge is a game where the league's best first-year players (Rookies) of this season compete against the best of the second-year players (Sophomores), who have won the past seven games. The game will be televised on TNT Friday at 6 p.m. Evans will also compete in the Haier Shooting Stars
