John Hernandez shares his experience with photojournalism

Photojournalism is the creation of photos that don’t just please the eye, but tell an unbiased story, said Sacramento-based photographer John Hernandez during the workshop he led. Hernandez’s workshop stressed the importance of working hard to get real, dynamic photos in the moment, rather than faking good shots with heavy editing afterwards. He provided unique tips about each topic, ranging from how to take head shots for profiles to making sure sports shots include reaction alongside action. Hernandez taught

Congratulations to the winners of the 2012 Journalism Open!

It was a very tough decision to choose the winners of The Sacramento Press 2012 Journalism Open. Fifty-three community contributors shared 93 stories about the greater Sacramento area and the quality of submissions this year really impressed the judges. Thank you to all of you who made this year’s Journalism Open a success. The Sacramento Press judges were Casey Kirk, Director of Community Outreach, Brandon Darnell, Copy Editor and Reporter, and Colleen Belcher, Editor-in-Chief. Each story was judged on newsworthiness, research and sources, spelling and grammar and how interesting they were. Each winner could only win one prize. His past experiences include professional photojournalism, motion graphics, web platforms and currently video journalism. Several of his own videos, some of which incorporate his background in still-frame photography, were used as examples for the techniques he delivered to an audience of about 35 budding journalists, artists and editors.
