Join us this Wednesday for the next Soul of the City: How to Balance Old with the New as part of the AIACV Architecture Festival happening now. Facilitators for this dialogue will be Bruce Monighan, AIA and Craig Hausman, AIA. As we look for ways to make out cities more sustainable we have many tools available and one of the best of those is to use infill of existing lots and to increase unit density and/or site coverage. Infill brings with it new challenges as higher densities, increased square foot per square foot of site, the use of sustainable materials and sustainable design theories are often expressed differently than in older buildings. Existing neighborhoods are typically a mi
In 2008 a little movie called Iron Man came out and dazzled us with fun characters, solid storytelling, and exciting set pieces. But the most exciting thing came at the end of the movie, after the credits rolled, when we were treated to a very short scene featuring Samuel L. Jackson and Robert Downey Jr. That scene basically announced one of the craziest and coolest ideas anyone has ever had, a real live superhero team-up movie: The Avengers! And now after five setup movies and just four short years this epic nerdgasm of a film is finally here. The Avengers begins with Loki (Tom Hiddleston) coming to Earth and stealing the Tesseract (that little blue cube from Captain America) from S.H.I.
After an attempt at a hostile take-over by a large pet food chain, the owner Millie of Trends-n-Treats (a local, woman-owned and operated pet supply boutique) took on a don't-give-up, give-back attitude. Now celebrating six months in their beautiful new location in the Promenade Shopping Center, they have joined forces with Sacramento's largest adoption organization, the SPCA, now offering monthly adoptions with the SPCA mobile adoption trailer. "Trends-N-Treats is better than ever...they continue to add value to the community in which they serves" exclaims Llewellyn, resident of Fair Oaks, CA & client of Trends-n-Treats. "We're all very excited to see animals go to great homes. We have gr
For years the southeast corner of Meadowview Road and Freeport Boulevard has been a vacant spot of land, characterized by dry, dug-up dirt and sparse weeds. When businesses took root in surrounding areas, that corner remained untouched. Drive by that same corner today, however, and you’ll see a leveled terrain, the start of a new sleek cement sidewalk and the concrete base for the new Walgreens Drug and Convenience Store set to fill the once empty lot sometime this year. Construction for the 15,000 square foot new retail store began in September of last year after Developer Paul Petrovich finally struck a deal with US Bank to receive a loan for the project, according to an article on sac
The Northern California Social Media Society is a new organization that aims to provide its members “access to a broad ecosystem of support to help you grow your business, enhance your leadership, and expand your impact as a socially responsible business leader.” Its launch party was held last Tuesday at Mix Downtown’s rooftop location at 16th and L streets. It was a sunny, comfortable setting for the introduction of the media society as well as good conversation among the enthusiastic attendees, who enjoyed light refreshments and raffle prizes donated by the leadership team and fans. The team includes Nicole France of Buzz Sense Media, Beth Diebels of A Social Media Group, Peri R. R
40 IS the New 40 By Michelle Gamble-Risley, co-author, Second Bloom Who started these phrases, "40 is the new 30," or "50 is the new 40?" We have a question, "Why isn't it okay to say, "40 is the new 40?" Our youth-obsessed culture drives so many women to feel anxiety around birthdays and add increased digits to their ages. In fact, dozens of famous women have outright lied about their ages just to avoid the public perception that they're getting e-gads, "older." Oh, the very idea of "older" sends many women to the bar to down a few Margaritas and forget their age sorrow. Getting "older" comes to us all. You can take as many trips to the Botox bar as you like and age will still tick for
This New Year is undoubtedly the most important New Year of my life, on account of growth in areas including politics, relationships and spirituality. The ball drop was amazing. It proved to this town, this country, EVEN THIS WORLD, that Sacramento can be happy and show solidarity if only given an outlet. More importantly, we proved it to ourselves. We have a new President, may God help him keep his promises. We have a new Mayor, and as with Mr. Obama, may youth and charisma be proven tools for changes that are greatly needed. I have a reinvigorated love and respect for my family. May fortune continue to shine upon them, for they are truly brave. May you and yours be as lucky an
The past few weeks of growth at The Sacramento Press has been quite exciting to witness. With more readers, more contributors, and more content, we are sure to see some major success with our site for our community. As the Sales Manager of Sac Press, I am now finding myself moving ahead “full-steam” with our plans to gain great advertising from our local, Southside Park and downtown businesses. My mission is simple. I will seek local and national businesses who are most reflective of, and beneficial to, the needs and views of our readers and contributors. Most of our advertisers will have already brought their businesses from what we like to call “brick-to-click,” by having robust,
