With rumors swirling that Cats phenom pitcher Dan Straily would be called up to the big club at any moment, Tyson Ross got the call to replace Straily in the starting lineup for Thursday’s tilt against the Memphis Redbirds. With nearly the same type of clutch hitting as the night before, Ross’s fine performance and solid relief from James Timmons, Pedro Figueroa and Rich Thompson out of the bullpen, the Sacramento River Cats beat the visiting Redbirds 4-3 in front of 8,762 faithful in another exciting contest at Raley Field. Even though it was the late clutch hitting of the Cats that helped pull out the victory, Cats manager Darren Bush couldn’t let the performance of his starter go unno
To say the Oakland A’s have an eye for pitching talent and like to have lots of live arms is like telling a 35-year-old that Santa Claus doesn’t exist. Duh! Graham Godfrey is one of those live arms that for one reason or another hasn’t been able to find his mark when called up for duty. Godfrey thinks he may have found what ailed him over his last few starts, when his earned run average skyrocketed from 1.21 on June 15 to 3.29 prior to the game on Wednesday evening. “I’ve been battling an injury and you can kind of notice the dip in my numbers,” said Godfrey. “It was something I was trying to pitch through, but I just needed some time off. I was able to rehab it and get it strong again
As Sacramento River Cats fans entered Raley Field on Saturday evening, storm clouds moved into the area and brought some brief but intense showers. Most of the crowd stayed out of the seats and waited under the overhang, looking skyward with hopes of clear skies so the game wouldn’t be cancelled. Be careful what you ask for. The Memphis Redbirds shut down the River Cats 9-0, extending Sacramento's losing streak to four games. However, the evening started out with plenty to celebrate. Prior to the beginning of the game, dozens of Little League teams paraded around the perimeter of Raley Field, proudly carrying team banners and waving to their family fans in the seats. The Sacramento River Cats have continued to struggle this year but looked to break out of their funk to close their series against the Memphis Redbirds. Their 9-0 loss last night makes it the fifth game this season in which the River Cats have been shut out. The River Cats have been outscored 43-7 in the last five games. The River Cats broke the streak and made up for some of the difference for the 43-7 run ratio, beating the Redbirds 14-3on Sunday, making them 8-14 in the month of May and 18-26 overall. The Redbirds got on the board first, adding two runs in the second, one of them coming off of a double by Ruben Gotay. The River Cats matched the Redbirds in the second inning, adding tw
There are few things as relaxing as going to a game at the ball park, and after a week of finals, that was exactly what I needed. There wasn’t a cloud to be seen when this one got started. Before the game I was able to enjoy a great meal served in the press box, which had a choice of brownies or cookies for dessert. I went with the cookies, four out of the four times. Sorry Mom. I also dropped a dollar in the home run cup, but when I found that I picked “Michael Affronti”, I knew my odds of seeing that dollar again were slim. On a night when the River Cats were commending our United States Military, defense wasn’t the strongest area for the ‘Cats. In honor of the special night, the Rive
A shot at revenge and a match-up against a first place team is all the excitement needed to make the next Sacramento River Cats homestand a must see event. The Cats will host two teams from the American Northern Division, starting with a rematch of last year’s PCL championship with the Memphis Redbirds, and four games against the Nashville Sounds, who come into the series first in their division with a 23-15 record. Memphis will be the first series from May 20-23, and Nashville will be the second series from May 24-27. With a record of 17-23, the River Cats are facing an uphill battle in the Pacific Southern Division, tied for third with the Las Vegas 51s. Their second homestand a
