West of the West Memphis Three

"West of Memphis": film review by Gary Chew Equal justice under the law is the reason for the documentary, “West of Memphis.” Many are familiar with this recently resolved example of shoddy police work and justice in Arkansas. West Memphis is a short drive into Arkansas from Memphis, Tenn. Three teenage boys were arrested in 1994 for the 1993 murder and bodily mutilation of three other 8-year-old boys in West Memphis, Ark. The case, which has no racial aspect to it, was complex and saw no complete resolution - with regard to the young men convicted - until 2011. The film was directed by Amy Berg, who also did the 2006 documentary, “Deliver Us From Evil,” about a pedophile Catholic pries

Henry Rollins' Capitalism tour to visit every capital city in the U.S.

The Henry Rollins “Capitalism” tour bus came into Sacramento on Thursday, Sept. 13. The bus parked at the corner of 11th and J streets while Rollins performed at the Crest Theater. Rollins’ “Capitalism” spoken word tour brought the outspoken world traveler, author, actor, ex-front man for punk band Black Flag and the Henry Rollins Band, to Sacramento. Rollins kept the audience entertained with stories about politics, music, traveling, touring and his experiences with people he’s met during his travels. Interview with Henry Rollins

The Henry Rollins 2012 Capitalism tour comes to the Crest Theater on Thursday, Sept. 13. The spoken-word tour by Rollins, an outspoken world traveler, musical genius and intense speaker and performer, will hit all 50 state capitals. The tour begins Sept. 6 in Honolulu, Hawaii, and ends Nov. 5 in Washington, D.C., on the eve of the 2012 presidential election. Last Friday, Aug. 24, I was fortunate enough to conduct a phone interview with Rollins before his visit to the Crest Theater. Rollins, as expected, did not hold back, delivering his thoughts on politics, travels, international experiences and music. His thoughts were refreshing and quite fascinating. The interview, via phone, with

Henry Rollins: Rebel with a Cause

A crowd of more than 500 Henry Rollins fans poured into the Crest Theatre on Thursday to hear the punk rock frontman turned spoken-word madman spill his opinions about the world. The audience ranged from teenage to old age, from followers of Rollins' former band, Black Flag, to people who simply had seen him as a commentator on VH1's "I Love the '80's." Whether a diehard fan or just curious, no one was guessing what Rollins' would say or do once he took the stage. Dressed in black pants, a fitted T-shirt and skateboarding shoes, the tattooed Rollins grabbed the microphone vigorously at 8 p.m. sharp. Throughout his two hour and 45-minute set, the 49-year-old kept the same level of intensit

The full range rage of Henry Rollins

An interview with Henry Rollins may seem like an intimidating one -- not only because the punk rocker, actor and spoken word artist’s hulking frame, myriad of tattoos, steely brush cut and bristling stare leave him looking like a discharged drill sergeant. His demeanor seems to hold an even deeper intensity, especially during his impassioned spoken word rants about current affairs that he’ll bring to the Crest Theatre June 3. That intensity was also showcased in the questions he posed to his guests on "The Henry Rollins Show." He would sit on the edge of his seat, posture rigid, each query rapidly fired as he pounced on subjects with a rigorous vigor that could leave any reporter worried
