Readers of all ages will travel the globe this summer as the Sacramento Public Library presents the 2011 Summer Reading program, One World, Many Stories. The Center for Land-Based Learning would like to invite Sacramento families and individuals to the "Fall Open House" at the Farm on Putah Creek, this Sunday, November 7, 2010 from noon to 4:00pm. Autumn is a wonderful time to experience everything the Farm on Putah Creek has to offer you and your family. There are miles of walking trails along Putah Creek, a bountiful organic market garden, hedgerows, ponds, birds, and wildlife all around. You might even spot a wild turkey or two. The Northern California Social Media Society is a new organization that aims to provide its members “access to a broad ecosystem of support to help you grow your business, enhance your leadership, and expand your impact as a socially responsible business leader.” Its launch party was held last Tuesday at Mix Downtown’s rooftop location at 16th and L streets. It was a sunny, comfortable setting for the introduction of the media society as well as good conversation among the enthusiastic attendees, who enjoyed light refreshments and raffle prizes donated by the leadership team and fans. Creepy, crawly, slithery critters abound! The reptiles at the 12th Annual Sacramento Reptile Show were the stars at the Sacramento Convention Center. The show, which began Saturday, will continue through Sunday and should average about 10,000 reptilian enthusiasts and animal fans alike over the weekend. With strollers packing in the 15,000 square-foot Exhibit Hall, people of all ages appeared amazed at the wide selection of chameleons, bearded dragons, pythons, and poison dart frogs. Vendors with colorful signs were selling everything from reptilian food, assorted enclosures and incubators. Many of the vendors were offering promotional discounts for this special show. Tours of any sort within downtown Sacramento are in limited supply. However, those looking for an alternative, lively and up-close view of the historic grid can sign up for Hot Walkin' Nights, the weekly walking tour that's scheduled to tread through downtown Wednesday evening. Organized by the Sacramento Walking Sticks, California's largest American Volkssport Association (AVA) walking group, Hot Walkin' Nights tours various parts of Sacramento County every Wednesday evening throughout June, July and August. Before this spring, options for walking tours in Downtown Sacramento were very limited; there was only one. However, Downtown Sacramento Partnership has worked tirelessly to create alternative choices for educational strolls around the historically rich Downtown region. "We used to only have one two-hour walking tour, and we tried to squish everything into that," said marketing manager Jennifer Snyder. "But we have enough Downtown where we were able to separate it into all the different tours. And there's more to come, so there's definitely a lot in the works."
