Pushing the boundaries and testing the threshold of what is considered the “norm” is what comes to mind when I think of contemporary art. That’s why Verge Center for the Arts is perfectly named. VCA is an art center providing several unique but necessary qualities for any thriving city; a sort of meeting of the artistic minds, if you will. Founded in 2009 by Jesse Powell, the VCA quickly made a name for itself by highlighting and honoring upscale contemporary art. Powell's vision quite literally outgrew its space, and in 2010 VCA moved to a 22,000-square-foot warehouse at the corner of S and 7th streets in downtown Sacramento, and became a 501c3 nonprofit arts organization. Skinner Howard Contemporary Art downtown has been at the heart of Sacramento’s gallery culture for the last seven years, but this month’s show will be its last. The gallery announced Tuesday the closing of its 5,000-square-foot space at 723 S Street at the end of June. There will be a final show previewing tonight and running through June 30, featuring functional art by Cody Lane and new works on panel by Michael Shemchuk. Skinner Howard has shown the works of roughly 200 artists in the "industrial chic" warehouse gallery since 2006. SACRAMENTO, CA – MARCH 20 – KVIE Public Television and local event sponsor Archival Framing, in partnership with Art21’s Access ’12 initiative, present an exclusive sneak preview of “Art in the Twenty-First Century,” the only prime time national television series focused exclusively on contemporary art. This advanced screening is on Friday, April 13 at 6pm at the KVIE Studios - 2030 W. El Camino Avenue in Sacramento. The season debut episode “Change,” which will be screened at the event, features artists who bear witness, through their work, to transformation—cultural, material, and aesthetic—and actively engage communities as collaborators and subjects. January 10, 2009 – Sacramento, Calif. – Showcasing both established and emerging artists in California, the Crocker Art Museum presents the 75th competitive exhibition The Crocker-Kingsley: California’s Biennial from January 10 to February 6, 2009. Due to construction at the Crocker, the exhibition will take place at the Tsakopoulos Library Galleria, located in Downtown Sacramento at 828 I Street. This exhibit will display 59 contemporary artworks in a wide array of media – painting, photography, sculpture, print and craft. These works demonstrate the vibrant art scene throughout California.
