Although West Sacramento resident Christina Pirruccello is currently undergoing chemotherapy for her second battle with breast cancer in two years, she has, according to friends, remained just as positive, chipper and energetic as she was in her high school cheerleading days. During this financially difficult time, high school friends and alumni have bonded together and created the inaugural Bike 2 Beat Cancer Ride on Saturday. The event will raise money through raffles and a silent auction that will support Pirruccello’s wish of building an education fund for her nearly 3-year-old daughter, Ella. “The community coming together to support her on Saturday is going to help make her wish co
Looking to bike for a good cause? Head out to Hagan Park in Rancho Cordova on Saturday and take part in the Underwear Bike Ride – getting exercise and donating underwear to homeless students. “This is a great way to get some exercise, connect with locals and enjoy the last day of our underwear drive for homeless students,” event spokesman Ryan Lundquist wrote in an email. The family-friendly event has the option of two rides: 6-mile round-trip ride and a 26-mile round-trip ride. Riders are asked to bring underwear for students in kindergarten to 12th grade in appropriate styles, and tax-deductible donations are also welcome. The ride is hosted by Project 680, a grassroots volunteer eff
In case you didn't already know: it's a great weekend to be in Sacramento. In addition to the arrival of the North American Handmade Bicycle Show (NAHBS) at the Convention Center, it's also the finale weekend of Sacramento Beer Week. Both were epitomized at Thursday's Art Bike Kick Off Party at Hot Italian. Hot Italian was serving their Beer Week special--a Moretti in a glass you get to keep--and Sierra Nevada was on site giving out samples of their beers. Three Art Bikes were on display (have you seen the other nine around town?): a Trike (that you were encouraged to climb on for a photo opp), a Shark Bike, and a St. Patty's Day Bike. The crowd was asked to submit their vote for their fa

Extra! Extra! Read all about it! Sunday marks the Sacramento Tweed Picnic Ride, an event where bicyclists dress up as old-fashioned dames and gents. 'Tweed' can conjure up the classic image of a newspaper boy yelling the morning headlines, which is exactly why the sight of more than 100 passing bicyclists, cloaked in tweed, would cause a double-take. The bike ride will start at 8:30 a.m. at The Zebra Club for breakfast and finish at 4:30 p.m. at Hot Italian for dinner. After breakfast, riders will cruise to The Sacramento Bike Kitchen where coffee will be provided by Temple Coffee. Riders will then trek over to the Capitol, capture a group photo and make their way to Land Park for a picn
Thanksgiving normally brings family and friends together around the dinner table, but only a Sacramento Thanksgiving brings them together around the Capitol Mall roundabout, whooping and yelling on bicycles. Give thanks for the Appetite Enhancement Bike Ride. The annual underground bicycle parade attracted over 500 people to the California Stage early Thursday morning. R and 25th streets were littered with road bikes, penny-farthings, low-riders, vintage cruisers, every bike imaginable, plus a giant toaster mobile. DJ Larry Rodriguez' international beats and raffle ramblings rang out over the block. What started out as a casual ride with a dozen bikers 21 or 22 years ago — no one can rea
In a flurry of face paint, furry costumes and fixies, around 50 people raced through downtown Davis on bikes Saturday afternoon, a mad dash to the Death Star — a.k.a. the Social Sciences Building at UC Davis — to find a map that would lead them through the rest of the ride: the Day of the Dead-ly Davis Derby. The Halloween ride was the fifth installment of the Davis Deadly Derby, a DIY bike race that changes form with each occurrence. Usually it involves a scavenger hunt, once it involved music performances at each checkpoint, and always it ends in celebration and beer. The makeshift race was organized by members of the Davis Bike Collective, with donations benefitting their new location
