On Sunday, May 29, more than 6,000 community members will be walking and rocking out to KISS, all in the name of charity. The third annual Walk ‘N Rock, being held at Raley Field, will split all funds raised between their 2011 non-profit affiliates (see bottom). Last year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of Greater Sacramento participated in Walk ‘N Rock for the first time and raised $26,000 through the event. This year, they hope to top that and raise $40,000. Founded in 1963, BBBS Sac currently has 282 active matches and operates on a staff of only 14. Matching Bigs and Littles and providing training to the mentors would not be possible without donations and successful fundraisers like Walk ‘

Driving down the road on East Roseville Parkway going north towards Roseville’s Westfield Galleria I nearly got into a car wreck. About two blocks from the Galleria, on a 3 car lane section of the Parkway I was trying to make my way across an intersection during a green light. Out of nowhere, a car making a right onto E. Roseville Parkway (on a red light) casually moved across all 3 lanes to pull up right in front of me. I was going about 45 mph (or whatever the speed limit was) and I had to step on my brakes as if I was stomping on a cockroach in the middle of the night. I did not hesitate and slammed on my brakes. My car swerved, I heard my brakes making a loud screech and saw (out of my
Cummerbunds, up-dos and corsages were all the rage at the Park Ultra Lounge for Friday night's "Prom at the Park." The second annual event benefiting Big Brothers Big Sisters of Sacramento was hosted by its Young Professionals Committee. The patio was decorated with balloons, making the atmosphere reminiscent of a teen-age dance. But the scene was far from a high school gym covered in streamers. The lighting was romantic and since the crowd was 21-plus, the drinks were spiked. Antonya Williams has been a Big Sister for two years and involved with the YPC since its inception eighteen months ago. The idea for an adult prom came from her Little Sister, who was struggling to graduate from hi
And I need a lot of them. That is, I need men to step up and do some good in our community by becoming a Big Brother mentor. Big Brothers Big Sisters of the Greater Sacramento Area is looking for volunteers to mentor youth in our program. Big Brothers Big Sisters is a one-to-one mentoring program, meaning our volunteers are matched with a child and the two of you spend time together doing a wide range of activities. Currently, the need is for men to volunteer in our program. We are looking for positive male role models to mentor one of the many boys waiting to be matched with a Big Brother. Unfortunately, due to a lack of male mentors, the boys often have to wait a very long time. A great
