Monthly beer tasting: Grab a pint of Fool's Gold

In honor of a recent weekend excursion to the foothills, this month’s tasting will be Auburn Alehouse's Fool’s Gold Pale Ale. “The Pale that Packs a Punch,” as they proclaim, is made just up the road in Placer County. At first glance, the off-white head is generous, dense and foamy. The aroma is fresh and bready, and the body is pale, golden straw in color. The taste is immediately fresh and light – a real easy drinker, but with a warming alcohol finish. This brew is 7.8 percent ABV, surprisingly high for a “pale ale” – rightly so, as they refer to it more specifically on the label as a West Coast strong pale ale. Others refer to this type of beer as a strong American blonde, or more sim

Valentine's for Vets

Valentine’s Day cards for veterans sounds like a simple enough request, but the reality is that the general population is too busy to recognize these unsung heroes. In response, the Secretary of Veterans Affairs has issued a request, and the Colfax VFW Ladies Auxiliary 2003 was eager to comply by spreading emails to everyone in the area asking for homemade valentines. In an unprecedented move, Carlo and Emma Lujan of C & E Auburn V-Twin, Inc. have adopted the request and taken it to the next level by incorporating the concept into the 32nd annual Sweetheart Run. All motorcycle enthusiasts and community members are encouraged to rally around the idea, producing a record number of cards by

Grammy Award Winning Dave Alvin comes to Auburn

As Dave says it, “There are 2 kinds of Folk Music, quite Folk Music & Loud Folk Music, I play both”, but as one who has seen Dave in many configurations, this line does not begin to explain a Dave Alvin show. On October 14th, Dave (along with the Guilty Ones) will be making their way up from Sacramento Town to the gold rich foothill town of Auburn, as Dave continues to claim his name as “The King of California”,( at least when it comes to songwriting, rippin’ Fender Stratocaster riffs, and incredible vocal phrasings). The Auburn Event Center (& Roadhouse) will play host for this very special and rare evening of fun! - (BTW if you have not been to Keep Smilin' show at the Event Center you a

C & E Auburn V-Twin "Grand Opening" a major area event.

C&E Auburn V-Twin, Incorporated played host to the biggest motorcycle ever event seen in Auburn as the community showed up en mass to support the grand opening. The family owned-motorcycle shop was one of seven businesses burned to the ground in the August 2009 49er fire. As far as the eye could see, motorcycles of every make and model lined both sides of Shale Ridge Lane and wrapped completely around the new building. An estimated 1,200-plus motorcycle enthusiast joined the celebration. Owners Carlo and Emma Lujan provided a complimentary catered lunch of barbecued tri-tip. Two local bands rocked out the back acre lot of the business. Bonneville land-speed record celebrity Chris Carr wa

Auburn Cycle Shop Rides Again

Literally rising from the ashes like the mythical Phoenix, C & E Auburn V-Twin, Incorporated is making a comeback. The new location at 12015 Shale Ridge is just blocks away from where the Auburn 49er fire burned the old shop to the ground. The C & E Auburn V-Twin grand reopening is scheduled for 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 16. Owners Carlo and Emma Lujan exemplify the “can-do” spirit often attributed to bikers. One day at a time, with quiet dignity and sheer determination, they have achieved the daunting task of starting over again. The Lujans said they are really excited to be “back in the saddle” again. “We want to invite the entire community to our reopening, and a special invitation is se

Playground Arson Sucks!

Last night the Auburn Community's main park had it's playground torched.  As an member of the rec district's board of directors I am obviuosly upset.  As a father and resident of the community I am furious.  Vandalism & delinquency costs a community on so many levels, from lost dollars and time, to lost opportunities and as was the case with a rock toss over an overpass recently, serious injuries and possibly worse. Whether in the heart of a city, or in an outlying suburb it is getting worse, and nobody is immune.  I so encourage anybody that witnesses any questionable activity to please notify the proper authorities.  Only by banning together & sending a strong message we will not accept

Free Party in the Park with Outlaw Country Legend Billy Joe Shaver!

You may have heard about Billy Joe Shaver in recent news as this 70 year old songwriting legend was acquitted on aggravated assault charges resulting from a bar room brew ha ha that ended with Billy shooting a man in the face! Outlaw legend is an understatement when it comes to Billy Joe Shaver, who is widely credited with starting the whole “outlaw country” thing in the first place. Rumor has it, at least according to itunes, Outlaw Country was born when Waylon Jennings showed up at a studio with a fist full of Billy Joe Shaver songs & recorded the classic “Honky Tonk Heroes” Album. Billy most likely would be as well known as Waylon, Willie, Johnny or Merle had the wind blew a little diff

10,000 to Give Helping Hands to Distressed Sacramento-area Parks on Saturday

SACRAMENTO – More than 10,000 members of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and their friends will descend on parks throughout the Sacramento region Saturday, May 8, to perform necessary work from clean-up and general maintenance to painting, planting trees and even construction jobs. Under the banner of Mormon Helping Hands, an international program of the Church that has provided manpower in distressed communities and organized relief efforts after natural disasters, the volunteers have chosen parks in their own communities to perform work in state, regional and city parks that have been hit hard by the recent downturn in the economy. The Sacramento effort is part of a stat

Auburn's Havin' A Party & You're Invited

Once a year the Auburn Community throws a big 'ole Party, and wants all our neighbors to know you're invited.  This Friday, June 19, The Auburn Park and Recreation District takes the lead on the regions biggest and best Free Concert and Family Fun Event.   Party in the Park has grown to be the "Premier Music Event" in the Foothills, and it is because of entertainment such as this years headliners The Waybacks.  The Waybacks have been thrilling festival crowds for some time now with their unique blend of styles, which really defies definition but appeals to a wide variety of tastes, I would suggest going on YouTube and searching their name, it is quite a journey.  From great songs when th

What's in a name?

"Nobel Laureate William Shockley & Emma B Shockley Memorial Park".  You may have read about it in the Sacramento Bee, or perhaps the Auburn Journal or somewhere else.  What the park name does not mention is in addition to winning a Noble Prize for his work on developing the Transistor (Time Magazine listed Mr. Shockley in the 100 Most influention people of the Century too), Mr. Shockley was a big supporter of Eugenics.  Now here is the story: In a trust, the Shockleys provided for 28 acres of land they own to be given to the Auburn Park and Recreation District, the gift came with 2 conditions: 1) The land be used for "passive" use only, and 2) It be given the name mentioned above.  The Di

Come up the hill this Weekend

I see the Sacramentopress as a great resource, that hopefully will spread beyond the boundaries of the fine city for which it is named after.  Just as I often come down to enjoy the many opportunities offered by Sacramento, conversely I hope many in the city  flatlands will take the time to head up the hill, to enjoy some of the opportunities available in the Foothills.  From time to time, I hope to shed some light on some activities, events etc.  This weekend rain or shine would be a great time to come on up.  One event in particular has a special interest to me, as I am helping to put it on!  Saturday, The Ridge Golf Course and Bar & Grill 2020 Golf Course Way, Auburn CA 95602 (530-888-
