Timmons, Carson and pitching staff shine - Cats win fourth in a row

Wes Timmons just wants to play ball. That is, with God’s blessing, of course. Timmons had a conversation with his wife before Sunday’s Mother’s Day contest at Raley Field and thinks he may have figured it out. After Saturday night’s game Timmons felt horrible. He told his wife Jennifer that he feels like he hasn’t been in the batter’s box for a year rather than the three weeks it’s been. She then told him what he already knew. “You need to check yourself and get back in the word and trust in God,” said Jennifer. So, after his pre-game one-on-one with the man upstairs, a rejuvenated Timmons promptly hit the field and went 3-4 with an RBI, helping the Sacramento River Cats beat the hot-hi

Salvation Army Receiving Large Turkey Donation

The Salvation Army in Sacramento received more than 700 pounds of frozen turkeys from California State Automobile Association of Northern California on November 11. The turkeys were delivered to The Salvation Army’s B Street Center of Hope emergency shelter in downtown Sacramento. The donation was part of AAA’s annual Thanksgiving turkey delivery project, an effort to help meet the needs of various communities during the holiday season. More than 10 tons of turkeys were distributed by AAA to 26 Northern California, Nevada and Utah non-profits. “Our point of view is to give back to the communities we’re serving,” said Greg Jennings, AAA district sales manager. “The Salvation Army does a v

River Cats miss chance to sweep division leading Grizzlies

Neither Rickey Henderson's presence nor a sellout crowd of 14,014 was enough to inspire the Sacramento River Cats to win Saturday. Having won the first two games of a three-game series against the Fresno Grizzlies, who are leading in the Pacific Coast League South Division, the River Cats lost game three 5-1. The River Cats remain six games behind the Grizzlies in the standings. Before the game, River Cats second baseman Eric Sogard said that winning and making up all three games in one series would be huge, but that the team is satisfied it has won the series already taking two out of three. "We've been playing good, we have a solid squad right now," said Sogard. "We're not where we wan

River Cats Summer Rolling

June 21. The first day of summer.   I, and 7,000 of my closest friends, rang in the turning of the season on a glorious evening at Raley Field, where the River Cats completed an impressive 7-1 homestand by shutting out the Salt Lake City Bees 4-0.   On a picture-perfect night for baseball, the home team bounced back from the previous day's defeat behind eight innings of shutout ball from starter Kyle Middleton. The right-hander had six strikeouts and lowered his E.R.A to 2.69, tops among River Cats starters.   A major factor in the River Cats' recent resurgence has been their vastly improved play defensively. Although individual fielding stats are not readily available for River Cat

Sacramento Pride fills Capitol Mall

Sandwiched between the Capitol and Tower Bridge, Capitol Mall was blocked off Saturday for the 26th annual Sacramento Pride Festival. About 12,000 people filled Third through Seventh streets from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. to celebrate the event and Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender Pride Month. The event was kicked off with a parade from Southside Park to Capitol Mall. A ribbon-cutting ceremony included Mayor Kevin Johnson, Senator Darrell Steinberg and Speaker of the Assembly John Pérez. "(The festival) is a celebration of equality for all people, regardless of gender identity or sexual orientation," said Bonnie Osborn, Sacramento Pride's marketing committee chair. Attendees wandered amon

Winning, It's Fundamental

Coco Crisp started his second straight game in center field for the Sacramento River Cats Wednesday night. Everyone's favorite nine-year major league veteran whose name is derived from a breakfast cereal led off the home half of the first with a sharply hit single to left center to extend his hitting streak to, well, two games.   The former Cleveland Indian, Boston Red Sock, and Kansas City Royal was pulled after the fifth inning, finishing his night going one for two with a strikeout. Though Crisp got all the fanfare, another former Cleveland Indian actually had more of an impact on the game.   Jamey Wright, signed as a free agent on Tuesday, combined with starter Kyle Middleton and

Safetyville USA celebrates birthday at Healthy and Safety Expo

There was reason Saturday for double celebration at Sacramento's Safetyville USA. It was not only the 12th annual Family Safety and Health Expo, it also marked Safetyville's 25th year of teaching safety and life skills to more than 200,000 children to date. The free event hosted around 3,000 children and their families for a fun-filled day of learning and celebrating. In the middle of the expo, birthday festivities took the main stage and were led by Liz McClatchy, President and CEO of Safetyville Center Incorporated (SCI) and Terry Polvado, Vice President of SCI. Children sang "Happy Birthday" to Safetyville and were introduced to the new and yet-to-be-named mascot of Safetyville, a dog
