It’s not often that one gets the chance to preview a significant new musical that may well be Broadway-bound: right in Roseville, no less. Unbeatable is the story of Tracy Boyd, a hard-charging, Type A executive whose life is turned upside-down by breast cancer. Did I say “musical”? Yes, you heard right. It’s a show not so much about disease – its treatment and consequences – as it is about “the human spirit.” And in that vein, there are many opportunities for comedy and memorable songs. This is Unbeatable’s West Coast premiere, and the show opened Friday night (6/14) for a three-week run at the Tower Theatre in Roseville, home of Stand Out Talent. I found this a fast-paced product

Why shouldn't there be a big ol' mess of Cajun and blues music all the way out and up here in Northern California … so far away from the Crazy Crescent City that lies in the mouth of the Mississippi River? The answer is totally affirmative. We have our own delta right here in the “backyard,” so to speak. We even have quite a good-sized river that runs through it. It's also where our “breeze” comes from. And it's where the 35th annual Isleton Cajun & Blues Festival happens. This weekend would be a good time for you take in this big mess of great music down Isleton way, near all the tall broadcast towers. The delta is another beautiful and different part of the rather fickle but unique top
Pitbull came to the Sacramento Sleep Train Arena on Thursday, June 13. Having been to many concerts, I can officially say without a doubt that his was the best one I have ever been to.Pitbull is not only an amazing entertainer, but a smart one as well. The Justice Crew was the first group to perform, and I have to say they really blew me away. This all-male group comes from Australia and mixes hip-hop dancing with pop music. While they did perform a lot of covers to popular songs, they also gave us a taste of their own single, “Boom Boom,” which is currently in the iTunes store. The real wow factor with this group is their dance moves. Not only are they super creative, bringing moves to
Thursday evening the Crocker Art Museum opened its doors for the second annual PRIDE Art Mix. Sacramento PRIDE day is Sat. June 15th. In the Setzer Foundation Auditorium the Sacramento International Gay and Lesbian Film Festival presented some short films. Director Lial Jones and Chief Curator Scott Shields led tours of LGBTQ artists in the Crocker. “Before Midnight” film review by Gary Chew On seeing the opening sequences of Richard Linklater's new film, “Before Midnight,” it was almost as if I had sat through the first scenes of “Stealing Beauty” with Liv Tyler. Unlike Tyler’s circumstance, it wasn't the Tuscan sun bearing down on two lovers seen in two earlier movies, “Before Sunrise” (1995) and “Before Sunset” (2004). Instead, it was the brilliant Mediterranean sun, as much aglow above the Greek island of Farmakonisi; the effect is much the same, you see, either place being where anybody would die just to get themselves serious joie de vivre—first. Continuing with as much joie de vivre as its plotless predecessors, “Before Mi
Man of Steel Directed by Zack Snyder This latest retelling of the Superman saga is solid but uninspiring. It’s like a concert performance by a musician without passion playing a piece of music that’s expected of him but which isn’t a favorite of his. The elements are there, for the most part, but there’s no pizazz – even the romance with Lois Lane (Amy Adams) feels flat and lacking in chemistry. This time around, Lois Lane is the Christiane Amanpour of reporters, the one person bound to track down the biggest stories, and mild mannered Clark Kent (Henry Cavill) is a drifter of sorts, seeking out anonymous work in anonymous locations and generally trying not to be noticed. This is, of cou
Q. About six months ago, my neighbors bought four chickens and built a coop in their backyard. I didn’t really have a problem with it at first, but lately I’ve been finding the hens in my backyard and they leave a big mess. Also, I’m about to put my house on the market and I’m sure that this situation will not look good to many potential buyers. Is there anything I can do to get rid of the chickens? Or to at least force my neighbor to keep them locked in their coop? I’ve tried asking a few times, but without success. - Dan A. Despite the quaint rural vibe it connotes (not to mention the appeal of daily fresh eggs), keeping chickens in your backyard can leave the neighbors less than thril
"Why," you may ask "is United Way collecting toilet paper at Cal Expo today?" Toilet paper? Here's the scoop: Local nonprofits spend thousands of dollars a year that is literally flushed down the toilet. The toilet paper drive helps offset this cost so funds may be used to provide necessary services to help nonprofits change the lives of the people they serve. Cesar Castaneda, Deputy Director for Atkinson Youth Services provides group and foster homes and a special education school. Soon they will have a mental health clinic. "Any money that we can save from buying toilet paper at our homes and our schools will mean more funds for music and art activities at school," he explains. "W
I have a long list of things I’m nerdy about. Comic books, the histories of fictional characters such as Peter Venkman, James T. Kirk, Bruce Wayne and Luke Skywalker; music, books, people who make their own Iron Man armor, J.K. Rowling, fan fiction, motorcycles with sidecars, and dogs, but none hold a candle (or, if you will, a lightsaber) to beer. The beer-brewing situation in Sacramento has become a beer lover’s paradise over the past several months. It’s like we’ve been playing the lotto and finally had our numbers hit. We’ve had a number of high-quality microbreweries opening in the recent past. New Helvetia, American River Brewing, Track 7, Bike Dog, and Ruhstaller, just to name a f

The owners of Ink Eats & Drinks in Midtown plan to open a new restaurant on 18th & L Streets around mid-July. Dime, which will be in the L Wine Lounge and Urban Kitchen’s old spot, will serve $10 entrees of American bistro-style comfort food, according to Christina Arntson, Ink’s assistant general manager and consultant for Dime. “We’re looking to be an all-around bar in the neighborhood,” she said. “A good place with good-priced food and drinks. Something different than what the neighborhood has.” Open seven days a week, the restaurant will serve lunch and dinner starting from 11 a.m. to 1 a.m. with the bar staying open to 2 a.m. Downstairs will be the main dining area while upstairs c
On Thursday, June 13, Crocker Art Museum’s Art Mix will appropriately mix poetry with visual art. The special Art Mix/Pride! will feature six highly respected Sacramento-area poets who are part of a regular poetry workshop group. Katy Brown, Paco Marquez, James Moose, Shawn Pittard, Danyen Powell, Marilynn Price and Allegra Silberstein have written poems in response to selected artworks from the museum’s long-anticipated arrival of “An Opening of the Field,” featuring the artwork of Jess Collins, Robert Duncan and their circle of artists. The poets met at the galleries, selected artworks and composed poems as a response to the chosen pieces. This type of poetry is known as ekphrastic, and
With spring quarter coming to a close and summer around the corner, I’ve been inspired by the ombre trend that always peaks during festival season. As you can tell I’m totally obsessed with this trend right now (just look at my hair)! I just love the beachy feel. I recently picked up this all-black maxi with a plunging back, which is perfect for summer, but I’m not quite agreeing with the “all-black everything” look in this heat. Although this elegant black maxi would be perfect for evening wear and during fall and winter, I decided I would rather wear it now and dip-dye it so it has a summertime vibe. It really shows off your back and is the perfect cover-up for a hot summer party so you

They serve an average of 500 people per day with programs that range from self-sufficiency workshops on living skills and employment readiness, to individual success plans. In honor of Father’s Day, proceeds from the Fun Run will go towards Family Shelter, one of the two shelters in the Sacramento are

The 3rd annual Purple Party, to support ongoing research of Alzheimer’s disease, returns this weekend at Beatnik Studios. The Purple Party will benefit the nation’s largest collaborative event focused around Alzheimer’s disease, the Alzheimer's Association Walk to End Alzheimer's. This year’s theme, Savor the Memories, aims to bring together families and friends who may have been affected by Alzheimer’s disease, as well as those who just want to show their support. A large black and white portrait of a young man with a wide smile and focused eyes is painted on the back wall of Jimmy’s Barber Garage. That is the late Jimmy Green, the namesake of the recently opened Midtown barbershop. Although he was a pharmacist and never cut hair, Jimmy is the new shop’s namesake because his son Terry Green and his daughter, Renee Green, want to run their business like Jimmy ran his – serving the community with personal care. The father and daughter will make sure the customer’s experience at Jimmy’s is a top priority. “We want the customers to feel good here. I think we’ve accomplished that,” Terry said. On June 8, Jimmy’s Barber Garage officially opened for bu
