In a sea of sushi bars, coffee shops and pizza by the slice, Sacramento has its share of copycat eateries. But a new German-inspired venue that is on the corner of 24th and K streets could shake up the gastronomical monotony. Der Biergarten is being touted as the newest plan that’s derived from one of Europe’s oldest traditions – Oktoberfest.

Sean and Erika Derfield, who own the River City Saloon in Old Sacramento, visited the Midtown Neighborhood Association Wednesday evening to present their plans to unveil a new restaurant that will be located in an area that’s readily walkable, has biking access and is already buzzing with healthy local traffic.

“We’ve always wanted to open a German pub,” Sean Derfield said. “We’ve seen some in San Francisco and New York, in different places, so Sacramento needs to step it up a little and have something different.”

The lot itself has stood undeveloped for a number of years. According to the Derfields, they are looking to use oversized cargo containers that customers can walk up to and order homemade pretzels, schnitzel, fresh sausages, and a variety of Belgian and German beers. Local brew and wine will also be featured regularly.

Open seating, casual dining and foosball and pingpong tables are all part of the new proposal. The Derfields said they hope to create the kind of environment that attracts a variety of Sacramentans.

Der Biergarten isn't the only German-style beer hall slated to come to Sacramento, as plans to open another location in the former Lounge on 20 space are in the works. The other, LowBrau, will be four blocks from Der Biergarten, at 20th and K streets.

Members of the MNA did express concern, as noise complaints have plagued the busy intersection within the last few years. Some critics have been quick to point out the seemingly high concentration of alcohol-centric eateries has caused trouble in the neighborhood.

“It’s important that all of these owners communicate with each other and to use their best practices, because (Der Biergarten) will be located with neighbors right next door,” said MNA President Matt Piner. “It all comes down to having a livable city.”

Kimio Bazett, owner of The Golden Bear, a bar next to the space that Der Biergarten will occupy, recently told The Sacramento Press that he is happy new businesses – including Der Biergarten and Anatolian Table – are choosing the area. He said that he expects that the additions will increase foot traffic and help his business as well.

The Derfields said they are excited to bring new flavors to Midtown. Der Biergarten is scheduled to open in February 2013, with plans to be open from 10 a.m. to midnight, and potentially as late as 2 a.m. on the weekends.

Sounds kinda mobile food pod-ish to me with the cargo containers and outdoor seating. Wonder how that works with codes.

Ben - As a Bavarian (currently in Bavaria) I approve of this message. :-) We use little wood sheds, most of them pre-fabs, I guess, in many of the Biergärten that bless this little Paradise on Earth known as Bavaria to dish out food and beverages. In a Biergarten you typically get your own beer and food from the little sheds. No wait service! In a real traditional Biergarten in Bavaria you could (and still can) bring your own food and utensils, as long as you buy the beer from them. Of course, I doubt they'll take the 50 - 100 years it takes to grow the right size chestnut trees to shield the customer from the sun. Greetings from Bavaria - Manfred

I additionally wonder what will be done in the winter. Tents and heat lamps? All-in-all this idea sounds like a fun and unique idea, I'm looking forward to seeing its execution.

That lot has been empty -- and just waiting for something -- since Golden Bear was Cafe Drago/Cafe Montreal. I'm not sure the noise from a beer garden will please the neighbors. But I like the use of cargo containers.

Supposedly they're going to take some steps to mitigate the sound--like growing either ivy or hops on the surrounding fence. But yeah, the spot has been vacant since it was Pava's restaurant, what, 20-25 years ago? For a while there was an ital food truck that parked on the lot, but that was before the current wave of food-truck regulations.

I like it. great idea, although it would play even better nearer to downtown. Imagine this on some offshoot of K Street, like in that space in front of Chops for instance.

The next logical step will be Vienna-style street corner beer and sausage vendors.

Might be a good idea for the big hole at 8th and K where the 2006 fire was--might be kind of novel to have a food-truck lunch at Sacramento's original street level!

"The next logical step will be Vienna-style street corner beer and sausage vendors."

That would be totally awesome! It is one of the best things to do in Vienna, especially if you are fluent in the local dialect and understand the exchanges between/among the vendor and the customers.

Wow! It's a refreshing idea to the standard issue bar or food spot - sounds like a great atmosphere! Can't wait!

I'm just hoping that their schnitzel is decent & not just some frozen chicken-fried steak that they'll try to pass off as German food. Keeping the fingers crossed.

This sounds like a great addition to the downtown area and the reuse of storage containers would be "green". As a Sacramento native I always enjoy all new venues to our great city! Keep up the good work Sacramento!!

Love this! Sacramento has needed a quality German-styled eatery and bar for years. This is a smart and inventive way to break the cookie cutter bar mold that plague our city.

I was excited till I saw the facebook page. Kinda douchey branding, and quotes from Married with Children. Yikes. I hope this dosent become one of the bar hop stops of the Barwest crowd...... i.e misogynistic homophobes, that are always brawling out front . But of course I wish them well, and hope this place works out, for everyone!

I spent a total of 42 months in Germany in the mid '60s and brawling was a common occurrence at the German bars and the Gasthaus .

Sacto can never have just one of anything, even if we never had one before. The Noah's Ark of trendy eating and drinking establishments? Snarkiness aside, I hope both of these places prosper.

I love the Idea! I don't understand the negative comments on here?! Would you rather have a new place to enjoy yourself or look at another empty lot in town? Can't wait for February!!!

I do hope they find a way to mitigate the smoke that emanates from the neighboring patio. I couldn't imagine eating anywhere near the front the golden bear.

Like moths to a flame - so follow the aggrobros to a foosball table. Yes, they are the predominant species in this town-even some come from afar (Roseville) to ride their cruiser bikes on the sidewalk-but that does not keep me from becoming excited for Sacramento to level up in the outdoor beer drinking arena. (Although the bums in Southside have been doing it for years..) though I beg you dear barkeeps, mind the foos knobs - as I assume they will be sticky and broken in no time.
Hooray sausages and beer!
