Two of Sacramento's upcoming bands – The Hungry and The Kelps – will put on a charity benefit concert Friday, Sept. 28, at Luigi's Fun Garden in Midtown.

The Kelps played Friday Night Concerts in the Park last year, and one reviewer described the show:

"As their set got under way, it became clear why The Kelps appeal to a younger crowd: The energy of their live performance is unstoppable. Singer Cory Barringer’s howling vocals brought to mind an enlivened preacher describing hellfire, bassist Cameron Betts hopped joyfully from one foot to the other, and drummer Tony Reye’s flailing arms conjured images of another beloved bit of sea life: the octopus."

Marcus Cortez (formerly of Darling Sweetheart, Black Tar Caviar, and Strange Tongues) will perform a soulful set with close friends from the local music community, and Mondo Deco will close out the evening with its raw, hip-shaking garage rock, according to a press release.

Proceeds from the concert will be used to restore instrumental music education in public schools through the nonprofit VH1 Save the Music Foundation.

Friday's event seeks to raise more than $600 to donate to underfunded music programs in public school.

Since 1997, the VH1 Save the Music Foundation has raised $48 million to buy new musical instruments for 1,800 public schools in more than 100 cities nationwide, including schools in Sacramento.

The concert kicks off at 8 p.m. and runs till midnight on Friday. Tickets are $7.

Luigi's Fun Garden is located at 1050 20th St.
