The space shuttle Endeavour flew over Sacramento at about 9:45 a.m. Friday piggybacked on a modified Boeng 747 on its last flight before becoming a museum piece.

Here are some photos of the shuttle as it flew over Sacramento. Other nearby places it was spotted include Stockton and Fresno.

It took off from LAX Airport in Los Angeles, and after Sacramento, reports said it was headed to the Golden Gate Bridge in San Francisco.

Sacramentans came out in droves to see the historic event, with the rooftops of parking garages, office buildings and residences crowded with people. Here are a few photos and videos shared with us by locals who saw the shuttle on its last mission:

I've heard that the public has lost interest in the space program, but I sure saw a lot of folks gathered on almost every streetcorner today during my trip from midtown to downtown.

I think people just lost interest in paying for it, but still, Curiosity landing on Mars and this have been two big events that draw tons of interest.

The atmosphere on Capitol Mall was extremely happy and excited.
I can't wait to see more professional shots vs. iPhone pics.

Well... though it's always fun shooting together, on major stuff like this, keeping our "Maverick" mission in mind of never shooting at the same angle/location really paid off. ;-)

I gotta tell ya though, this was an incredible day for me personnally; I've witnessed the Space Shuttle program come full circle now. I was fortunate to be in the VIP area at Edwards Airforce Base when I was in junior high school to see the first Shuttle (Columbia) land. The excitement at Ewards that day was so palpable. Today, I got to witness the Shuttle fly by on its final transport flight and from the top of the parking garage at N and 27th, I felt like I could almost reach up and touch the underbelly of the plane.... it was so awesome.

Ha... you noticed that too. I saw that when I walked out of my house to head downtown for the flyover. I was surmising that it may have been jets flying the route doing recon just for condition info for the transport pilots.
