A lecture is taking place while a student texts his friend. The student pays no attention. He is lost in his phone and the doodle he is sketching on his handout.
The teachers glances at him thinking he is just another student wasting his time in her classroom when he could be learning something valuable.
Little does she know his sketches and text messages may prove to be very valuable.
Cody Newmarch and Akio Boden are the next pair of college kids who believe they have what it takes to create a successful business.
Gates and Allen, Wozniak and Jobs, Paige and Brin; these dynamic duos started the successful companies Microsoft, Apple, and Google. These billion dollar companies started as an idea between two college friends.
Newmarch says "I look up to the fact that those guys took something that was just an idea or for fun and now look at them."
Just as the idea for a Macintosh computer came from a college student so did the idea for Die Fighting Urbanwear.
Newmarch says, "One night I was working on a paper at about 2 in the morning and the name just came to me."
But why start a clothing company in a bad economy? Why start a company while living the life of a typical broke college student? This could be answered by Newmarch's entrepenurial spirit.
Newmarch says, " I feel like this is something I need to do now. I don't want to let it pass me by. At least I'm trying something, if I fail I fail. If I don't do it then I fail myself for not trying."
While Newmarch speaks passionately about his dreams and aspirations, Boden sits to the side quietly.
Their friendship and partnership seems odd. Newmarch is boisterous and outgoing while Boden is shy and reserved. They both know what an odd pair they appear to be.
Boden says "I'm more of the behind the scenes computer guy. I'm pretty shy."
But Newmarch thinks it's a good thing that they are opposites.
Newmarch says, "It's kind of like a yin and Yang thing. He's mister quiet computer guy and I'm mister never shut up guy. But it works."
These two have spent a lot of time in this project but they do not do it alone.
Boden says " we get a lot of support from our friends and families."
One friend in particular even helped them create their logo.
Newmarch says, " Josh is great with designs so I called him and he was on board."
Josh Fields is a mutual friend of Newmarch and Boden. He does graphic designs and was happy to help.
Now that the company is up and running the pair are putting everything they have into it. They spend all their extra money and time on this company.
Newmarch say, "I am paycheck to paycheck broke. I'm sacraficing everything I have for this."
Although sacraficing money cause them stress, they do not seem to mind putting their free time into this.
Boden says, "It's fun. It's not much of a job when you get to hang out with your friend."
The time spent together may be fun but it's a struggle for them to find time. Newmarch works 25 hours a week and has a full schedule at Folsom Lake College. Boden does web design and also takes classes at American River College and Sacramento City College.
Newmarch says, "The most challenging thing is for is to find time to discuss designs and new products. It' hard to find time between work and school. All we have are some hours on the weekend."
As any other college student knows, the weekend is for socializing.
Newmarch says, " Don't get me wrong, I mean we still go out, but there are some nights we sit at home from 7 p.m until 2 a.m."
With all of the hard work being put into the line the new dynamic duo is hoping it will pay off.
Boden says, " Basically we just want success. We want to expand our name, expand the line and do something worth while. Ultimately I want to see someone wearing our clothing and be like WOW!"
These two already feel successful. They have people purchasing clothing and even expanded their designs. They now offer designs for women.
The pair is happy about where they are now considering this was all just an idea made while procrastinating on a paper.
Newmarch says, " The coolest thing is seeing one of these designs on a shirt that could have been just a little drawing I crumpled up and threw away."
Boden and Newmarch do not know where their company will be in the next ten years. They can only hope for success. In the mean time they will continue to draw ideas in class and maintain ambitious spirits.
